Hi to all New Zealanders!
I am dying to see new season pictures of active shrooms
Post all your finds here so we can see them all together
Here's some to start off. You've probably seen them before. I am going out hunting tomorrow so I'm gonna steal someone's digicam and get some quality pics!

3 hunting trips, about 250 libs all up, not much but enough
My camera sucks, I hate it . And I thought it was so cool when I bought it a couple of years ago.
Good idea on the NZ thread

And how about a bad luck story....
I went out the other day and picked about 100 nice fat libs in the same spot i have been for the last few weeks (found a new patch too!!). I took them home to dry....
I had people coming around so hid them in the closet (read dark and no air circulation) then i forgot about them for 3 days and when i remenbered...they had all rotted to a slimy blob of black snot where each shroom lay on the paper.
BUMMER!!

hi
I went hunting today and got me some Ps. Subaeruginosa. About 500 in total I guess, but I didn't count them. I'm gonna go get some more tomorrow
They were growing on rough sandy ground near pine trees, in and around the grassy patches.
Here is some proof: Sorry the pics are bad. I just can't get them right

found these today, im pretty sure they are Ps. Subaeruginosa but if someone could confirm that would be nice. they were growing on woodchips and showed bluing on the stalks and round the caps.
Also could anyone tell me if they have ever found Copelandia cyanescens in paddocks around the auckland area.

Anyway, here is nice closeup of my latest find. Looking at this picture makes you feel like you are a mushroom yourself

Hey peeps
I went out and got a few more subs. Not as many this time, in fact only about half as many, but it only took just over an hour to pick.
OK here are the pics they are from when I got home. I took some cool pics of a few growing, but they are on my friends camera and I will have to wait to get them from him.

Oh wait, I did a search and I think it might be called 'Aseroe rubra' or 'flower fungus'. It looks a little immature.
Here's a cool pic of a more mature specimen:

finding mushrooms is so cool!
I've got a few questions about the mushies, for anyone who feels like replying.
1.Ive only found subs on woodchips, do they also grow from pine needles?
2.What are the mushrooms that everyone seems to find on golf courses? and also where on the golf courses? under pine trees?
3.Has anyone around the auckland area ever found Copelandia cyanescens in any cow paddocks?
4.Can someone please find some Aucklandii and post some pics?
thanks for any answers.

Nice find there trippinalice!
In answer to your questions, 1) I've only found subs growing where there are rich grassy areas around pine trees. I've never found them growing from pine needles alone, but I've definitely found them growing amongst pine needles in grass.
2) I've found two types of shroom growing in golf courses: Ps. Semilanceata and Ps. Subaeruginosa. Found some of the former in a golf course yesterday in fact. Look around the more open grassy areas for the semis and near pine trees for the subs. Watch out for golfers though! Go on a rainy day

I also find Subs in rich grass under old pine trees in the grass and in a golf course also. When did you start finding them haunted? They havn't sprung up yet in Auckland.
I have found Copelandia Cyan. growing in small numbers with Psilocybe Subaeruginosa in the bush which is rich in nutrients and heavily shaded.

- I've been finding them since late april. I'd imagine they'd probably be poking through up there
We recently had good rains and I went back out the other day and picked another 300+ subs, plus a few more liberties. Didn't get any pics though, unfortunately. The liberties aren't really coming through from my favourite spots at the moment. Is anyone else finding that the liberties are rather scarce right now?
-What was the habitat [for the subs]? They are all from rough sandy ground (at the back of sand dunes) around pine trees, where there is a bit of grass coming through. Rip up the sticks and grass and they are there.

Yeah - liberties do seem to be a bit scarce at the moment. I've been out a couple of times in the last week after that rain. I have about 4 patches which I'm rotating and all of them had sweet FA. I think it might be just a little too warm at the moment?? Still, can't complain. Gong on some of the posts.....we seem quite lucky here to be able to just shoot out when we have 20 mins to spare and be almost guarenteed a meal!!! This week is the first time in about 15 visits that I have found none.

Oh yeah Haunted, my mistake, they have started popping up in Auckland my best spot is going nicely. I just havn't found them out in the open under pine trees like I usually do, it might still be a little to dry.
Went and saved some subs from the rain today, picked four of the bigger ones (Not too many, but they weigh 15g all up good enough) and built shelters for the rest. Heres a pic.

Nice finds you guys! Those are some wicked pics Destruktikon. Gnarly looking shrooms Get any pics of them once picked?
Oh, I had a little look around a pine forest the other day and found some subs growing directly from the pine needles. There was some decaying wood in the soil though, and very moist. I say this just to append one of my earlier posts. Didn't get any pics though.
I decided to steal some mycelium from my favourite spot and try to sprout some subs at home. 5 have sprouted so far I'll take some pics when they get a bit bigger.
Also, some pics of Psilocybe Makarorae aren't too far away. Just got to go out and take them...

Going hunting tommorow morning, bloody wet here today. Its funny cause other people get pissed off with the rain, but its all good for me, I can go get shrooms

Well, I'm a bloody happy chappy. Today I went for a search in the rain and cold, it being my only day off bar weekends. I was looking around for 3 hours in perfect Sub environment, but found nothing. Feeling wet and miserable and also losing the will to ever search for mushrooms again I headed home, on the way back I noticed some very magic looking mushrooms growing in a small box garden. I went back to investigate and found these: There is a god! I don't need to tell you how lucky you are DestruKtiKon do I? I thought my mushrooms were big, nice stuff.

Overall I found about twice as much as whats on the plate. Found a new spot today when our car broke down on the way home from a well known spot which we only found 10 or so at.
As the roadside mechanic was checking out the car I went for a stroll and I noticed a lot of woodchips in the bushes on the side of the road, as soon as I went into the bush there was a 5 square meter patch of solid mushrooms, I went in deeper and eventually found a couple of hundred subs in one patch.

Newbie tale - related to topic by location, rather than subect:- I'vemet up with a bunch of aging ex-hippies in San Fran recently and they've encourage me to try some mushrooms for their visionary powers. I'm living close to one of the forests in NW Auckland that is known for its mushrooms, and decided to have a quick search online and found this forum. Inspired by Resolutes report of find in Auckland, I got into the nearby forest to have a look myself - armed with fading memories of the pictures in Paul Stammers identification book. Getting into the forest wasn't easy - heaps of gorse, blackberry, pampas grass etc I went under/over/around, and by the time I got into the forest proper I was soaked (lots of rain) and full of prickles. However, I followed the call of the mushroom gods and I started looking for something resembling the photo of the psilocybe aucklandii that I was looking for. So, with back bent and head close to ground, I came across a bewildering set of fungi that I had never really taken notice of before - tiny red mushrooms, huge red and white spotted ones, puffy balls of fungus. I found lots of mushrooms that physically resembled the aucklandii from the top side, but had no colouring reaction and porous looking fibrils. So, after walking around for an hour and getting a bit lost, I decided that it might be a good idea if I actually knew what I was looking for, where I should look - just any old bed of pine needles, or around the trunks, growing on dead wood? and also when I should look - after frost, after rainfall, afternoon, after a smoke etc. So, I would appreciate some useful advice Cheers

sounds like you found some fly agaric shrooms ( red, white spotted ones) you should keep an eye out for decaying wood, and wood chips in general, and sometimes pine needles (less common?), shaded, and indirect "sunned" areas. Just go hunting, people are finding alot at the moment, even though the season hasn't completely reached its peak and do some more research good luck peace

Thanks Merkaba. Happy to go hunting but just keen to know that I'm not out of season for the location. Any pics around of the aucklandii showing the fibrils? Also happy to do some research - any recommendations for resources on the local mushrooms here in Auckland?
Thanks

Subs are everywhere in auckland, if you find woodchip gardens the chances are you will find subs in with clusters of other species. If anyone from auckland is still having trouble finding any PM me.

Psilocybe Makarorae! [Re: haunted]

Hey all,
So yes! I finally managed to find some Psilocybe Makarorae - so hard to find! The were growing in deciduous forest, in all the rotting wood and leaves on the forest floor. It was very moist, down there among the dew coated cobwebs and moss covered tree roots.
Here are some pictures of them in their natural environment: enjoy
I only managed to find four in total: they are *very* hard to find. Here are some pictures from when I got home:
If anybody wants higher resolution pictures, or pictures from different angles just PM me
I'm taking spore prints right now. What should I do with them I wonder?

I thought I'd add this in just 'cause I thought it looked nice Its from the same location as the Psilocybe Makarorae. The spore prints from the Makarorae came out very dark purple, almost black.

I haven't had any luck finding a single Aucklandii...yet. I went for a look last weekend, which should have yielded results, but I was unable to find even one. Either someone has raped the area (highly unlikely, as it's quite hard to pick EVERY single shroom in a huge area of forest), or it's still not quite cold enough. I'm hoping end of May and mid June will be perfect for shrooms, because I'm really itching to find some to photograph. Trippinalice - Aucklandii grows on pine needle/soil debris in certain forests. However, it doesn't appear there's any growing at the moment. I will look again in a few weeks though (hopefully pics this time).

hehe its probably worth your while to drive down to Dunedin you can't go anywhere here without tripping over shrooms.
I went out again yesterday for about half an hour and got about another 100-200 subs. Not a lot of fresh growth though.. most of the ones i was picking were looking quite old.
And those damn liberties have all but given up it seems!

Hahaha, nice pun!
But damn, you seem to have a lot of shrooms down there!!! It's a bit scarce (from what i know) in wellington. But i have found a trustworthy patch that fruits enough for me atleast! But not enough for the worms it seems

It's definitely a good time to be picking in Auckland, i've found 5 new spots in a week just heading to work and going on short hunts, maybe i'm just lucky. I found a monster spot yesterday which is what i've been looking for all season. Picked 100 subs and left about another hundred to get bigger.

Subs seem to be the flavour of the season in NZ! My patch is fruting fine too and i harvest maybe 30 a week or so. But bugger me last time i went picking i got spotted by a schoolboy, so i guess it's bye bye patch unless he actually is sensible enough to pick only the mature ones. But i doubt that from your average 15 year old thrill seeker
Anyway has anyone here actually found any blue meanies (copelandia cyanescens) in NZ? According to the "magic mushrooms in australia and NZ" online paper, they should be fairly common.

Nice find clipid. Looks to me like you stumbled across a patch of the ol' Psilocybe Subaeruginosa there, or as they are called here 'gold tops'
I went out again yesterday and got another batch of subs: about 100-200 in total. They are getting harder to find here with so many people out looking for them. I did manage to find a good wee spot with some of the biggest ones I've ever seen. Didn't have a good camera though, unfortunately. Got a pic on my cellphone but its crap. I'll post it anyway though One of the caps was just under 9cm across

i'm down in Dunedin. The season seems to be really slowing down here. Took 2 hours and quite a bit of effort to find those all those subs yesterday.
Every now and then I get little nostalgia trips of the mass Ps. Semilanceata patches I found at the start of the season. If only I knew it wouldn't last.... *sigh* I tried very hard (my legs hate me) the other day to find some and only managed to find about 150. They were potent though: 5 people had a very good time that night

I've heard quite a bit about Copelandia Cyanescens in NZ, it sucks no one has put up any pics. They are definitely on though, had a few reports filtering down from Taranaki about them. I've never picked them myself, but I really want to.
And starfungi, what can i say? guess I've got good luck Once you know what to look for they're everywhere. Maybe I have got a sixth sense though

hrrm, they really aren't everywhere in wellington. Perhaps in more rural areas, but certainly not in welly! I *really* have looked! 99.9% of the woodchip beds just contain the annoying stropharia arunticea, and most of the more natural habitats like "forests" and parks are just too hilly and dry/sandy/rocky/sunny/exposed for them to grow.
But i'd love for some wellingtonians to prove me wrong! Post yer in-town finds here and i'll get my coat

Have picked over 500 shrooms in the last 4 days. Hamilton shroomers should get out there, its going nuts! Extremely potent wavy capped subs are also popping up in abundance. No pics yet, but soon.

Here is some I stumbled on abut 4 months ago growing in sandy soil covered with wood chips. It's been dry since then, just caught the end of the season. Am I correct in saying they are Psilocybe cyanescens and not subs? They went green/blue around the edge of the caps and the stems bruised blue in places. They were quite potent. cheers.
