cap rot, black spots
    #2609469 - 04/28/04 01:30 AM (12 years, 7 months ago)

i have about 6-8 pf cakes going now, most on second flush, and they all have the problem of caps turning black on otherwise healthy mushrooms. at about 1 to 1.5 cm tall they start to go bad. it's not just one cake, but many, and it's been happening for a week or so now. they don't really "seem" contaminated, no giant green growths. though, the smell in the terrarium is sometimes a wee bit off.

also, one cake grew out this nice size shroom on it's last flush, great looking, but upon closer inspection there were a few small black dots (positively contamination) on the bottom. is this mushroom ok to eat? is it ok to eat *any* mushrooms that came from a terrarium that smells funny? sorry for so many questions, thanks for any replies :-)

ok, i did some searching and found my answer to my question, or, well, not an answer per se, but i'm going to just ditch all my cakes after they fruit (so i can use them for spore prints), then go throw the cakes in the backyard

Has your answer something to do with aborts ?
If it does, then that's not a problem but you should pick them as soon as you spot them ....

no, i know aborts. this is actually happening when they full grown at this point. perfectly fine, then big black splotches on the caps. seems as though maybe it is due to too high of humidity. i have been doing this the same way for a long time though and always fan the same amount and keep the perlite the same, and have never had this problem before. so i'm not quite so sure it's humidity, but i'm going to keep it a bit lower maybe and see if that helps. my bet is some sort of bacteria, and i'm just going to completely clean out the terrarium before the next batch goes in.

Yeah, i was about to say that. You should also do the same thing to the whole grow room.
