that is a type of corrosion caused by a process called depassivation. Depassivation involves the deterioration of protective coatings around a metal due to contact with a chloride. In the case of the aluminum pc, the main culprit for it is salt.

Which makes me wonder how much salt is in your water! Its either that or a string of bad luck with the coating itself.

I have a gas range. The manual explains pitting is caused by metals in the water. Perhaps I don't clean it well/often enough. Our water is not from a well, but we do use a water softener. That said I don't drink the tap water as I dislike the taste. When the softener runs empty there is noticeable mineral deposits on the showerhead. I think it's a combination of causes.

mystery solved. water softeners work by trading mineral ions for salt ions. also why you don't like the taste of the water out of the tap.

Came home from a week vacation and there was 5 beautiful ounces in an outside bed that I made. I suppose how I set it up and where in my backyard is perfect.

Usually my fungi thats grown outside (just in my compost) have been dry, cracked caps etc. But these were perfect!!

Also just put some RW spores to agar, super excited about that culture.

How fast can extra fresh (2 days from harvest) spores germinate? I have inoculated few agar plates with them and I'm seeing minimal growth in single inoculation site after 72h. It's probably contamination (we will see in few days), but maybe it's possible?

Were the prints dry? Seems like they germinate really quick when they're fresh...as long as they're dry.

Found this at a local antique store. I've never felt like I need a FH but damn if it wouldn't be cool to have.

While I'm here let me ask a question. Try not to make fun of my noobness because I feel like the answer is something blaringly obvious that I have just overlooked.

How is it that wet grains can cause failures but at the same time myc does fine in LC?

Does it matter what flush you take clones from?

If the grains are too wet they wont get properly colonized leaving a food source open to contamination.

I think wet grains can also germinate dormant endospores inside of the grains that aren't killed off in a PC cycle more quickly than if they were dry on the surface, unlike LC which is actually sterilized in a PC (no dormant endospores remaining)

Straight up Sherlock. Standing water does not and cannot CAUSE contamination. LC is a bitch to use because everything must be done perfectly or it's completely fucked. I personally use LC almost exclusivity and love it but a lot of great mycologists think I'm crazy. (P.s. I am kind of crazy).

Grain is only mostly sterile. Therefore standing water is your enemy as it creates anaerobic environment which hurts/ weakens myc and greatly encourages bacterial bloom which then greatly encourage things like trich.

I’ve been told by a few tc’s to clone from the first flush because you want the fastest genetics. But most of the big fruits usually come on the latter flushes so I’m not sure lol

Big fruits in later flushes have less to do with genetics than they do the amount of fruit growing at the same time. If you've ever grown cannabis..... Tomatoes.... Apples.....  Any other growing thing I can think of. You'll understand the principle at work.

The best fruit from a heavy first flush pinset is your best bet. Best indicator of fast and desirable genetics is a bad ass fruit among the masses.

Did not realize this. I thought 90mins in a PC sterilized errthang.

This poses 2 more questions:

How long would it take to fully sterilize grain in a PC?

How long do you lads spend sterilizing ypur grains?

It seems up for debate how hot or how long will fully sterilize our grain. For what we do, complete sterilization is not necessary. We just need the mushroom myc to out-compete the bad stuff.

I pressure cook my oats 2 hours 15 minutes at 15 psi

I would say 2 hours 15 minutes is definitely overkill and just wasting time and electricity, if anything drop down to 90 minutes, really no need to do more in my experience.  Even my 60 minutes has been fine for years, every contamination I ever got I believe comes from a bad movement in the SAB, completely human errors unreleated to PC'ing for only 60 minutes.  Curious to see others responses though
