My White Sister-in-Law was Denied a Job for her Race * 1

To keep it short: she has tons of experience in animation, media and big productions. She had contacts and the interviews went amazingly. Then she got the e-mail saying they were going to pass because they wanted to "diversify" the workplace. It's not even a case of "maybe it was racial". They flat-out told her that they didn't hire her for her race.

I'll be moving out of the US (to South America) in a month and half, but I still worry a lot for my family and the future here. I've read articles about companies being praised for having a "fully diverse" management team, but I figured they were isolated instances. Apparently not.

Anyway, what are you thoughts? Do you think it's good? Do you think it'll cause major problems? Or is it bad but not the end of the world?

That's always been the question with the practice of affirmative action. White college applicants have been victimized by it for the past twenty-five years. Some people figure it has to be done, others think it's immoral in the opposite direction. Frankly, I think it harms what are really more qualified candidates, often. But it has been done for decades.

It's almost impossible to talk about Trump's accomplishments without making shit up.

If the company really sent that email they were stupid. They must not have anyone trained in HR. Most companies can hire or fire anyone they want, but stating the reasons why can be hazardous (going all the way back to the 1970's Bakke reverse discrimination case). That's why when you call a previous employer for a reference they will tell you nothing except whether that person is eligible for rehire.

Seems like your sister in law was discriminated against.

I know this black guy with an expensive car who constantly gets pulled over because that combination does not compute with cops.

I get discriminated against for being gay.

I'm sure your sister in law also got discriminated against for being famale, numerous times.

Its bad yes but its ubiquitous.

Maybe it's a great company with a terrible hiring process.

The fact of the matter is she was a victim of PC culture and that's not acceptable. I don't think rationalizing that the company may be potentially shitty really fixes this injustice.

The unfortunate truth for white women is we will never get to the top, we may as well slow things down now
sure, the power structures that favoured men will eventually invert to favour women if they are not torn down before the balance shifts
but the simultaneous inversion of the white/non-white dynamic structure is going to do the same

while white women have straddled the relatively comfortable yet oppressed position of second place to the peak point of the white man
when the balances are done shifting, non-white men will hold white women's relative position, and non-white women will hold the former place of white men
it will still be a great time for some tho




transitioning mtf may mean going from first to second for now,
but given time it is going to be the difference between being in second last rather than dead last

while there may be room for agreement with nooneman from a moralistic position that a company with discriminatory hiring practices is by its nature a shitty company

stopping to consider your position that it may be a "great company"
is it a terrible hiring process, or is it a shift in what businesses feel will be the more profitable decision in the long run

the OP references animation work, which leads me to a question like with regards to Disney
as they basically have an effective monopoly on high-scale animation
is there anything to inhibit them from, say, disproportionately hiring workers with traditional Chinese names to increase the appeal of company image in rolling credits in the increasingly valuable Chinese box office?

There’s something fishy about this story. The OP is saying this company flat out violated federal, state and possibly local employment law. Not only did they violate the law, they explicitly stated they were acting in an illegal manner. Your sister should sue. It’s an open and shut case.

Landlords and companies discriminate often if not a lot.

They say things like 'your not a good fit' or what ever.

If you really cared you'd burn down their building.  Then pleade insanity.

Bias seems to he the American way.  But there used to be a highering policy by law that did try to ebforce the mixed aspects of society, into the workforce.  Like a company shouldn't be all white protestant males.

The prevailing rhetoric in human resource management is that all hiring for professional positions is based on fit with the corporate culture. It sounds illegal on it's face, but I guess they get away with it because they are smart enough not to say something stupid (unlike the line in the OP), and because most of the people they interview are qualified so they can pick who they like.
