Mine is bigger than yours!
    #26091207 - 07/05/19 09:07 AM (5 years, 6 months ago)

J/k j/k ...
After making some 6.5 quart Atl#7 grain bags I am curious as to what is too big?
I used malted barley(works great)  and PC'd for 2hours 20 mins.
I would prefer to inoculate my spawn with only one quart colonized grain so based off of what i can gather it seems like 9 quart bags would be optimal (3-4) hours PC time.

Pressure Sterilizing a 4 Gallon Spawn Bag Loaded with 20 Quarts of Grain!
Quote:

one bag18 quarts .
Inoculating it with 2 full quarts .
Making the bags entirety 20 quarts of grains.
four hours as the sterilization duration this time at 20-22 psi.

Who goes REAL BIG?
Can you load above the filter patch? If you go big can you please share how many quarts/(weight) and how much time you pc for.
:hatsoff:

I haven't gone over 5 quarts in a bag yet, so this looks very interesting to watch, bw86!

Wish ham's pics were still up on the 20qt loaded bags.

I go 2 hours in the pc and sometimes 2.5 hours if i stuff a little bit extra in but i've never gotten close to using 6qts in a bag yet.
Maybe your thread will build my confidence to go higher on next weekends batch.

Do you happen to know the penetration per hour for the steam going through grain type and %hydration? I'm sure there's a rough chart somewhere.

I was going 3 hours for bags but came down to 2.5hrs. Now you've got me thinking,:pipesmoke: i should've stayed at 3 hours and just gone up one more quart at a time until the failure starts.

After that, bring it down about half a quart and i would be where i needed to be.:blazed:
I've been adding 2 quart jars on top to hold the bags down too.

its was the grain bags in Funky Monkey's sig that made me want to go bigger.
I just dont really have a reason to go bigger except to get larger Atl#7 stones or large outdoor beds.
Hopefully there will a number of people that chime in with their sizes and times.

I personally do 4 quarts. (gotta remember your jars only have .6-.7 of a quart in them) and over loading the tub with nutrient does not increase yeilds. If im doing bag grows then I push that up to 5 and I pc for around 4-5 hours at 17 psi with a full aa941. I can fit about 9, 4-5 quart bags per run. which is enough for me for one half of the week.

I pc for that long because I do not use spacers in between the bags and that is about how long it gets for the pressure to stop increasing over time. Showing that core temps have risen to meet the steam temp and sterilization is occuring. Once I get to the spot that pressure doesn't increase for at least 30 min of being left alone, I add another 30 minutes of cook time and then remove from heat.

Since I started running my pc like this instead of by a timed tek or what not. I have had zero contamination issues.

I have. Now I know 4qts is enough. This was a few years ago.

I don't know how much was in there but more than 4qts.

Look at my tyvek bag sleeves! Never again, lol.

Is 4 quarts enough? At least in the case of stones.I was under the impression the bigger the substrate the bigger the stones. I use to pull monsters out of 4 quart bags but will they be bigger with 8 quarts or more? I assume so since i pull even bigger stones out of spawned substrates.

Created a resource for stone growing in my journal, it's more than likely addressed there. It's been years but if I'm remembering correctly it was devilstone who compared stone bags being flattened, bigger, every which way, could be mistaken. Hope this helps. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/22818693

I am new at this and will be interested to see how this thread progresses.

For my first foray into bags they got a little bigger than I had planned (almost 8 pounds).

As I have seen some trusted resources recommend 5-6 lbs I've leveled off at 6 lb bags. If for no other reason than because this size bag fits four like a glove (albeit a tight one) in my 23 quart presto. 5 lb bags would be even easier as at 6 lbs I have to struggle a bit with the jar rings used for spacing. May do that next run.

So I will be interested to see what others say about this.

Just spawned a dozen of those bags today. By the day after tomorrow, I will have a "28-tubber" up and running from this first run of bags.

I am looking forward to seeing how it goes, and what I can learn in the process!

EDIT: P.S. Filthy thanks for the stone growing resource, bookmarked it!

love it they're sexy. i would implore every cultivator here to heed the sterilization advice. that is when you are achieving sterilization. if you have to turn the pc down on the stove every 30 min you havent reached stable core temps yet.

Found this post from RR while cruising some threads trying to expand my knowledge base...:

The blobs on cubensis are caused by a too-nutritious substrate at fruiting time.  BRF cakes are always too nutritious unless allowed to consolidate for a sufficient time.  Cased manure or coir trays are generally much less nutritious, thus the problem of mutants is reduced.  I don't think I've ever seen them on straw.

One blob-inducing mistake I see a lot of growers make is using a too-high spawn rate.  It really doesn't make a substrate colonize much faster because once the mycelium starts growing in high gear, it's usually fully colonized in a few days.  It's that first week to ten days that's slow, and using a high spawn rate doesn't really change those dynamics much, but it does lead to mutants due to the extra nutrition of all the grains or brf, ect., which was in the spawn.

RR

Well shit... Looks like all my PE tubs are gonna be extra blobby lol. My giant ass bags of WBS are going to be SUPER nutritious! I'm excited to see how it pans out.

This thread (and the subsequent research that ensued) got my juices flowing for adding stone producers to the mix. I really dig the stealthy nature of stone producers and it will be my go to recommendation to people in less than ideal living situations for cultivating once I have some grows of this kind under my belt.

I love Mex A, agree with the first post its so nooB friendly and the most stealth your gonna get.( a jar in a cupboard,)

Cant wait to try and fruit these things as well!

AND, once you get good at it you can get fruits that are comparable in potency to Pans if you spawn it out after harvesting the stones???

On top of the stealthy bulk yeild, and how well they lend themselves to edibles (flavor and texture) getting to potentially try an advanced fruiting project for some upper echelon private stock boomers sounds very appealing.
