My brother was in Texas when his 6yo daughter stung herself on a cactus. His wife was very upset so he decided to take the little smurf to the hospital.

They waited, waited and waited, someone looked at it and did little more than apply a bandaid.

Later they got hit with a $1300 medical bill for that.

There is a bit more wrong with American healthcare than big pharma being meanies.

Dunno why you'd take a kid to the hospital over a cactus spine.. I mean what more could you have expected then to do for it but put a bandaid on it?

As for the waiting, that's how triage works. Serious injuries are prioritized over boo-boos.

I'm not saying healthcare here isn't fucked but really that's not a good example to illustrate the problems with it.

When I got a rotavirus and couldn't keep liquid down for 4 days and became delirious with dehydration and they gave me some anti nausea meds and a couple bags of saline and then charged me several grand for it, that's a bit better of an example. My problem actually required me to go to the hospital.

Triage doctor visits are pretty expensive here in Australia as well, they're on a sliding scale between $300 and $600 depending on the care required, then meds and extras on top. For nationals it's free.

Years ago when I first came back from South Africa with my wife she was pregnant. As she didn't have her Aussie papers through yet we checked out the cost for the child to be born in a hospital here. It was going to be $20000. Obviously we flew back and the child was born back over there.

Another time years later my daughter had a tumour in the marrow of her humerus. They flew in a machine and surgeon and zapped it out with keyhole surgery. One of the nurses told me the procedure cost more than $100000. I paid nothing.

But yeah, even in countries with universal healthcare the cost is astronomical, the government just picks up the tab.

I think in general companies should be allowed to charge whatever they want to for drugs, and that the free market should be allowed to decide their prices. However, that's only going to work if we really support small businesses that can challenge some of the big pharma companies.

If the price of a drug is outrageously high, that's an enormous opportunity for a small company to come along and charge way less, becoming a successful company in the process. We just need to support the creation of small companies like that as much as possible. Maybe by having small businesses pay no taxes, making it easier for them to get through all the red tape and set up shop, that kind of thing.

If there was more competition then companies wouldn't be able to overcharge for drugs.

Thats not how it works. Other companies are prohibited to compete so Big Pharma charges $200 for a $2 drug and gets away with it -- because its illegal not letting them get away with it.

Plenty of Americans illicitly source their prescription drugs overseas because in the US they cant afford their own medicine.

it's not illegal to buy drugs from overseas the fda just doesnt reccomend it cuz they dont have the same health and safety standards which is part of the reason thier stuff is so cheap and cuz they steal things.

basically the research and dev formulates the drug so they charge high prices to get their money back

but in the case of insulin this is actually theft from the consumer and not that far off from murder, because our tax payer money funded some of the public projects in the first place

so essentially something gets made with taxpayer money then greedy cock suckers give it to a pharma company to make and they have no other competition since they won't give up the patent

the FDA when they say something isn't tested they're usually just bullshiting you, as far as medicine goes, Canada and india have the cheapest medicine in the world

Actually insulin was developed in Canada. Americans had nothing to do with it.

It was discovered in Canada and Americans and the rest of the world had alot to do with its development. It's also to this day very expensive to produce and bring all the way to the consumer safe and effective. That's just one facet of how dumb the argument is of why do heroin addicts get free naloxone (which they dont) but I cant understand why insulin costs so much cuz that actually effects me boohoo.

It only costs 3 dollars to make a vial. Diabetics are just paying the 3 companies to NOT upscale. Pharma is the biggest monopoly. Even at 3 dollars there are shortages cause they want to see how high demand can go.

Its time to subsidize healthcare or my only goal is moving to another place. I've wanted to be a canadian all my life.

I doubt it costs 3 dollars a vial who made that number up? Good luck getting these companies to shovel money into a furnace to develop these drugs for free. Theres a reason why these companies must protect these profits as it could cost multiple billions of dollars to develop them and then in the end people turn around and sue you for billions. The money is the driver and they need it to do things like oh idk develop more cutting edge drugs that save millions of lives. Go take a pharmacy ethics course or something.
