Also don't be afraid to post about your favorite team.  Glad as hell I don't have to watch Case Keenum this year.  What it felt like watching Bronco games last year.

i was disappointed in how mediocre the Titans were last year.  i hope they suck worse this year so i can revel in how horribly they lose their games; it's always fun to watch.

Everytime I hear the word Titans I think of that show and Jeff and then the saga of the q.b. that got shot in the head for cheating on his wife.  Plus coming within a yard of a championship against the L.A., St. Louis, and so on forever and ever.

I learn so much about football when Madden comes out and the rosters.  Am a betting man as I live within two hours to casinos.  I don't know jack shit about the Titans this year.  Even who their QB is.

But that is why I like sports fans.  I learn.  Can research it all online but people that actually live there, whole different thing.

On a serious note, odds for the championship.

Who do you like?

2020 Super Bowl odds to win:
New England Patriots 6-1
Kansas City Chiefs 6-1
Los Angeles Rams 8-1
New Orleans Saints 9-1
Indianapolis Colts 10-1
Chicago Bears 14-1
Philadelphia Eagles 14-1
Green Bay Packers 14-1
Los Angeles Chargers 16-1
Cleveland Browns 16-1
Pittsburgh Steelers 20-1
Dallas Cowboys 25-1
San Francisco 49ers 25-1
Seattle Seahawks 25-1
Minnesota Vikings 25-1
Houston Texans 30-1
Baltimore Ravens 40-1
Atlanta Falcons 40-1
Carolina Panthers 60-1
Jacksonville Jaguars 60-1
New York Jets 80-1
Oakland Raiders 80-1
Denver Broncos 80-1
Cincinnati Bengals 100-1
Buffalo Bills 100-1
New York Giants 100-1
Detroit Lions 100-1
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 100-1
Washington Redskins 100-1
Tennessee Titans 100-1
Arizona Cardinals 200-1
Miami Dolphins 200-1

Hoping K.C. does it.  Fuck the Pats.  Rams are only 8-1 but don't trust Goff.  Guessing he will be hurt midway through the season, let alone the playoffs.

Browns 16-1.  Wow has been thirty years since those odds.  Dolphins are looking like they are turning the corner, lol.  I knew they were bad, but really?  K.C. or Bears.  Get that thought off the lob pass by the immortal Rex Grossman out of my head.  Plus, Chicago is a great sports town.  Atlanta, notes on how to choke in the worst way possible.  Matty ice.  Yeah, right.

Does anyone remember Jim Kelly anymore?  No one remembers AFC or NFC champions.

I have a chip on my shoulder in regards to the Titans.  They were forced upon Nashville, given a 50 year tax break, have demanded this and that, are paid for by the tax-payers, etc...

They actually have done some good things in the community.  However, they can't put a team together for shit.  When they lose, they generally lose in a spectacular, glorious fashion.  So many turnovers/interceptions.  It's like a trainwreck.....you just have to look.

100-1 odds, :rofl2:

I was in Clarksville working at Fort Campbell the year the Titans went to the Super Bowl.

Never have really liked them since.

We had an apartment with no furniture and I remember laying on the floor watching the game on a little 12" black and white TV.

Yeah, the music city miracle and couldn't have happened to a better inept opponent.  Nashville is alright, actually enjoyed visiting it a long time back.  Would never do so if I had to pay for it.  Even saw the Grand Old Opry high as hell on coke wondering through the massive garden there.  Was a pleasant experience.

Back to the original question.  K.C. hasn't won a championship since what?  The 60's?  Is it go with the Pats again in the most boring Superbowl I have watched since the Denver/Seattle one, 80-1 isn't much better but at least they got one championship borrowing Payton for a bit, unlike Farve and Minnie.

Still so far off and injuries an so on and so forth till the season begins.  If the Pats win again going to boycott football for a year.  Can just imagine Bill looking at game tape of Goff and thinking, yes we can hold them to three points.

A lot left to enjoy this Summer before fall hits.  Just wasting time overthinking things before I become Mountain Man for a month.

Nashville was alright 20 years ago.  Now it's hellacious.  It wants to be New York City.  I come back here during the summers and after two weeks, i can't wait to get the hell outta here.  Unfortunately i'm here until mid-september or early october.

Yeah, different times.  Why no bottles are allowed anymore at games.  Bored.  Thinking the Browns make the playoffs and beat the Steelers twice and Big Ben retires at the end of the year.

Steelers, think it is going to be a rough year.  God, I am ready for my vacation.

Here you go PJ. I'm sure you've seen this but maybe not since Bleacher Report isn't exactly must read journalism. https://komonews.com/sports/seahawks/report-russell-wilsons-contract-rated-worst-on-seahawks

The ironic thing is the Earl Thomas and Frank Clark were also named the worst contract on their team.

RW is over-payed but so will the next 5 QBs probably moreso. They all consistently give their teams a fair chance to win any game which is hard to find. It's a Lose\Lose situation either over paying or starting from scratch.

That's my final word on the subject. Now it's on Russ to be more consistent passing the football. His agility, burst, and speed have declined. If he continues to lose that part of his game it's learn to throw or bust. Shall be interesting but I'm more excited for this Season than I was the last.

"Russ to be more consistent passing the football. His agility, burst, and speed have declined.".

Nah, just more of the offensive line quality and W.R., Tate, and T.E., Graham.  Wilson is just fine in my opinion.  They had their peak, that time is done.  And he will always be remembered by most for that ending of the Super Bowl than his destruction of the Broncos.

Thanks for the link, I actually had not seen that. His contract is way too big so its common sense at this point. All teams with mega paid QBs struggle. I personally would have started from scratch at QB and rebuilt the Defense and Ground game. They will rebuild in the next year regardless though, they'll have to.

I saw that. Pretty good odds for an unproven chemistry, after all, they are the Browns, ODB or not. They also have the Steelers at 20:1....can't see that either. I would say that I think the top 4 are pretty solid after that, it's anyone's guess.

Someone needs to set up the Pickem. I'll do it if no one else does.

We should do it against the spread this year and have a pool. Weekly winner gets a prize, and overall winners first and second place get prizes.

That way there's motivation to Win each week, even if you're in last place you can come out profitable by winning weeks. Keeps it exciting all year.

How much money would it take for that payout?

I don't like point spreads but I'll go with whatever the majority wants.

Betters are playing the spread but football teams aren't. When they're up by two scores with time running out they go into a very loose prevent defense and basically let the offense have 10 yards on every play to prevent the immediate score. That's why I hate point spread betting.

The original cast of SNL did a great parody with real film footage and fake voiceover. The Dallas Cowboys carried Tom Landry off the field on their shoulders after scoring to lose by less than the spread.

I understand Magicman's point of weekly payouts keeping everyone interested, but I think it will be very difficult to get people to pay significant money up front.

Whatever we do we should get organized.

Sometimes they very clearly are playing for the spread...

We should just do a regular pick em league then an ATS league for those that want that.

We could do that if no one wants to set up a new one.

That will work. Should we do it like we did in the past, and have people declare if they are playing for $20?

Andrew luck retiring is pretty crazy. And he got booed walking out off the sideline haha.
Curious if Mariota will be a Titan next year. As a fan of the team idk how to feel. Kinda hope we suck dick and get rid of him but with luck out the AFC south is more open so if Mariota can play good I think we'll have a shot. Always feels like this when were 0-0 though

Also it took me like 30 minutes to figure out how to get back in that pick em league and I'm the damn admin :facepalm3:

Thoughts on Luck retirement:

1) He was great a Stanford
2) His NFL trajectory was amazing
3) I think he’s going to re-enter the NFL in two years and he’s going to make sure he has a great o-line
4) Colts fans had the right to boo him. It comes with the salary and not giving the team a heads up during the off-season. I personally don’t hold it against him but he’s not a Falcon either.
5) I bet despite the good natured farewell there’s going to be some squabbling between him and the Colts over contract money. He might have to pay damages.
6) I didn’t hear him or anyone else say he’s fortunate to be in a financial situation where he has the luxury to quit.
7) It reminds me of when that guy from the Bills quit at halftime recently.

They said his first three years were the best statistical years any quarterback ever had. He was out or playing injured ever since then.

I can't remember. Was drafting Luck the reason why Indy got rid of Peyton Manning?

If I remember correctly, I think Manning's neck injury was what got him out of there, and Luck came along at the right time. I could be mistaken.

Ya it was really a combo of both. Indy would have kept manning over any other QB besides luck or like Brady probably but him being out a whole year there back ups went 2-14 so they ended up with the first pick. Kind of a perfect storm.

Peyton would have never put up with that no o-line no RB BS they pulled on Luck at the get-go.

It’s a symptom of the nfl obsession with putting all the chips into one player (the qb) and being all about that pass about that pass bout that pass no run

But that shit is already dying because same as ever a football is a team game and you need balance and no weak spots.

A weak right tackle is enough to ruin your season.

I agree. And that is how Green Bay is squandering Aaron Rodgers career, and probably the same with Marino on the Dolphins. Having a great QB doesn't work with deficiencies on the O line, running game and defense. The era of the highly paid superstar doesn't change the fact that it's a team game.

GB payed rodgers too much, so no oline or dst. Seattle is paying Russel too much so no oline and vastly inferior dst. Ravens overpaid Flacco and he's a Bronco now.

I agree, the salaries for the marquis players now a-days are pretty much robbing Peter to pay Paul. It always seems to be the o-line that gets hit the hardest with the scraps of salary cap money.
The thing is that with good coaching and a little luck health wise, some of these sub par o-lines begin to gel around the mid point of the season and start acting like a professional group of linemen. They kinda learn on the job.
I remember watching Romo just getting whacked and crumbling to the ground time after time because of f-ed up o-line. Flacco went through it too after signing that ridiculous contract.
It seems like the league is doing everything it can to protect the quarterbacks except the obvious which is up to the teams. I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of salary cap on players positions with a yearly graduation that would help spread some of the money around and still be fair to legitimate super stars.

Good o-line coaches are crucial but if you want your team in the playoffs the need to have together the day the regular season starts.

(With an occasional exception of course)

Finally, GB-CHI.  Mack is a beast of course.  Who would you take in this game.  I have no clue about what Green Bay will be this year.  Been in the wilderness for awhile but back to learn a bit.  Been out of the media loop.

So I know Chicago pretty well.  G.B. is a mystery to me besides Rodgers of course.  3 point difference for Chicago.  Want to go with Green Bay so much but I don't think they will do it.  Thoughts on this opener of the season?

Am a fan of the Broncos by the way.  So it is completely objective.  No fandom, base it in reason.  But I know how hard that is starting the season.  God help the Redskins starting Casey this year.  At least the Broncos got one during Peyton and it was because of the defense.  Skin fans, been a long time.

Anyway, thoughts on this game?

Leaning towards Chicago at home.  Maybe start the thread if you want.  Shit I will.  I live next to Nevada.  I bet and pick quite a bit.  A lot of insightful people on the shroomery yet most are hometown fans and don't pay much attention to the rest of the league.

Guilty of that myself.  Time to get back into research.  Was going to go bet on the Chargers at 7.  No RB.  And does homefield even matter there?  Picking is easy, the spread is a much different animal.

Seriously start a thread soon just pick the winner.  I'll play.  For fun of course and to learn.  My long term vacations are only in the Summer.

But yeah for the NFL fans on the Shroomery lets do a pick thread.  I will rate the players.  I will make a separate thread for this.  And add your thoughts on the spreads Shroomery players.

Will make it now.

Asked the mod before you posted it.  A gift card is fine, no entry fee.  Though there is a pickum I like those who get the competition and the spreads and if you hit 60%, it is impressive even passively following it.

So will start a new thread with this and see where the interest level is at.  50 dollar gift card by me to whoever wins at the end of the superbowl and record ATS and as favorites if they cover.  Feeling creative, will through in the money line and record it as a plus one or minus one in the third column like a tie.  Will probably through in some bonus midseason and whatnot of division titles and so forth.

Think that is why the mod approved it and will always ask beforehand.  Things like this is legal in all the states but with real money I do my betting in Nevada.  Though 12 states have legalized sports betting to a large extent including Indian Casinos which I never got why they wouldn't before.  It is more of insight from people around the U.S. is why 50 is really nothing.  Maybe one at midseason.  So will start this.

And once again enjoy watching Casey this year Redskins.  I suffered through it as a Bronco fan last year and there is a reason he just had one year out of two from his contract before shipping him off.

Baltimore fans, at least Flacco during his contract year got you one superbowl but so did Dilfer who I saw in person when he came to town with Fresno State and blew out the Y.

Still, would take Flacco at 34 over him.  Am high on Cleveland this year.  Not Johnny football that arrogant fuck but Mansfield, and all they have done in the offseason, thinking they will do something special this year.

I play Madden just to try to get Cleveland a championship.  Reading about it when the Indians of the MLB were in the World Series and an outside reporter said to an old timer, this town is electric.  He responded by if the Browns made the Superbowl it would be twice as much.  No way in hell this year but a good foundation.

Are the Browns going to fuck it up or be good this year?  And how good is Wentz and the Eagles going to be?  I don't even want to think about the Pats, am so bored of them and hopefully without Gronk, though he was out what, half of his playing career from injury anyway but maybe age will finally catch up with Tommy Terrific!

Thursdays game with the Bears and Packers should be interesting.  Been watching that matchup for a very long time.

Joined our normal pickem league (humanplant). I still got a couple months left working on the mountain so I'll most likely miss a bunch of picks but

ESPN simulator has 49ers winning division at 11-5. It also has the Browns winning g their division. Sounds legit to me.

Me too. Browns win a few games last year and all of a sudden they're everybody's favorites. I'm feeling pretty good about the Ravens this year. Jackson has been throwing the ball much better this year in camp and I believe that they have the best group of tight ends in the league along with some exciting new wide outs like Boyken and Brown. Add some tough downhill running backs  and teams are going to think before stacking 8 in the box.
Their defense was 1st in the league last year and I don't see them moving much down that ladder even though they lost their top 2 outside rushers. They have hands down the best defensive backfield in the league especially since picking up Thomas.
Gonna be fun watching them play retooled Steelers and Browns. I am indeed ready for some football!

Hey Ran-D if I'm not mistaken you can make every pick for the whole season ahead of time if you think you're going to be away from civilization and whatnot.

Obviously this wouldn't be a good idea if you're able to do it week by week as things change drastically from week to week but making any pick is better than having blank games.

You're right, I can and probably should do that. I'm so out of the loop with the NFL these days I probably stand no chance either way.

I only listened on the radio. Was the Bears offense that completely bad? (probably) or did the GB defense have something to do with it?

Trubisky missed a bunch of guys.  He looked pretty bad.  He did get hit a few times.  Green Bay d looks better than last year too.  Bears are going to need to feature Montgomery if they want to win

Lamar.  Watching him at Louisville an and one season under his belt.  Love QB[s that can run and not the 6 foot tall and heavy hundred plus QB's.  Though I am going with Rivers and the Chargers.

Man get it done.  Lamar, guessing teams are gunning for him to get hurt and will be surprised if he lasts the season.  Just the way it works.  Like Baltimore in the opener.  Won't bet on it, money is on a piece of paper, will be an interesting game.

Never get cocky.  Arrogance is a downfall.  Hope he doesn't get the second season downfall/dropoff.  though I doubt it.

Yeah. Trubisky looked like shit. Even with the Bears defense he's going to have to  be at least mid level to succeed. He seemed to make progress from first season to second, so hopefully this was just one game.

Also the Bears almost completely abandoned the ground game after the first two series. Didn't make much sense to me when the QB wasn't effective and the score was so close.

I think the ole bears are going to have to do a shit ton RPO’s to have success.  Trubisky has to run.  Almost a Baltimore offense.   But it’s one game.  Maybe the Green Bay D is really going to be that good IDK

Just watched it on YouTube.  What an asshole.  Why is it with WR's that they are the most likely position to be as such?  I could list endless examples but Owens was the worst IMO with Ocho Cinco right behind him.  Pittsburgh doesn't put up with that shit.  And now the Raiders have learned why, and they will take any fucked up human being diva.

Glad he GETS NOTHING!  Throw away tens of millions because of your stupid fucking ego.  He is 31.  I wouldn't wish it on anyone but find it amusing he got frostbite in one of the most high tech things the NFL has these days because he wouldn't read the instructions on it.  You know a whole playbook but sometimes reading a short instruction label might be a good idea.

Watched another one.  That is amusing.  The Steelers have to pay him 21 million against there cap this season and very few teams were even interested.  Guess the Steelers get a 3rd rounder and 5th rounder still but who cares?

On another note I get the whole soap opera as some writer compared it to one.  Bell leaving and Brown on as The Steelers Turn.  Hearing Bell I get it but with Brown being pissed off after Ben ran it in for a touchdown instead of throwing to him, I hate shit like that.  But Big Ben is no angel himself.

Wondering what team dares to sign Brown now.  Someone will.  Any educated guesses?

He will be on a very short leash, and he has to know they will not tolerate him acting like a dick. I think it's a good short term move for New England. It worked with Randy Moss and he was more of a head case than Brown.

Hoodie will have a man with one job - deal with AB - everything will be communicated through some dude who understands exactly how to talk to him and he’ll be productive af and only one person’s headache. Why the Falcons can’t do simple shit like that is beyond me.

Love Julio but he’s spent.

$66 M for 3 years is a gift. His production level is at like $5-7M a year value.

Meanwhile the Pats are going to get ferocious mileage out of AB.

And history repeats itself again.

Watching Goodell in the press box during the Bears/Pack game and it was so fake and shoomsing.  If anyone uses that term anymore.  He just had to make an appearance and watching talk to two others in that press box, it just felt so fake and phoney.

God, this bender is of epic proportion

"the proportion of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is rising"  Though it will ride on if the Chargers do their thing with Rivers.  Wow, what a ride.

Amusing how an environmental message got thrown in there copying and pasting finding how to spell the word right when on a lot of substances.  Glad my head is the right place.

Go Chargers at shit stadium.  Instinct and logic/reason yet this was all logic/reason.  Knew beforehand but it felt like cheating and the fear and anxiety.  The dynamic is strange.  Trust your gut, lol.

I didn't even know Metcalf was playing. He's made a huge difference on this game already. Chris Carson a beast too. Demarco Murray on steroids that's what I've been saying. He looks really similar with his movement and timing.

They're missing two pro-bowl Defensive players in Reed and Ziggy. When healthy their front 7 should make up for a mediocre secondary. Mcdougald, Griffin, and Flowers are all decent they just need experience. Dalton is a seasoned Pro. I've always thought highly of him.

Their playcalling hasn't been great. Running twice in a row after a turn over was a bad idea. RW was just getting started and it always takes a while for him to get hot. Have to let him throw it when he's making 30 million.

I don't like these PI challenges. You could call PI on 80% of in-completions, there's always some contact. That shouldn't have been called a PI because it was bang bang and the defender touched the ball before the Receiver. Defender also tried to avoid the receiver to play the ball he didn't run him over.

Either way it will stand, they'll call it PI because that's the call on the field. In order to overturn a PI call it has to be blatant no contact.

I don’t care if I’m the only one left with this opinion. Instant replay sucks. The call on the field should be final. If it’s wrong tough shit. It was faster and more fun that way. Human error can go either way so it’s just as fair.

Was the ball loose before his knee touched the ground is something I never want to hear again. Just fucking play for fuck’s sake.

Typical Seattle game. It's never easy! Even when they were the best in the NFC 5 years back they would barely beat bad teams. The Bengals aren't a bad team and Dalton has played well against this same Seattle scheme many times.

Good win for Seattle. This is the best roster they've had since 2013 if everyone stays healthy. You're right though PJ. They need to fix some things in the secondary before I'll consider them a real SB contender.

This was a thing of beauty. The speed\power to gain a step followed by the coordination and body control to adjust last second and pull in the catch. https://www.seahawks.com/video/2019-week-1-dk-metcalf-runs-under-russell-wilson-s-deep-ball-for-42-yard-gain

Rough opener, but we benefited from a bad call to seal the game (or a questionable call at the very least). Agreed secondary needs work. Four hundred plus yards is a bit much, hopefully they get on track.

The game was over anyways. They had no time outs and were over 40 yards from FG range with less than 20 seconds. The Refs made a couple bad calls on both teams but I think it even out pretty fairly.

Pete Carroll never gets blown out, but they rarely blow any else out either. Maybe that's just how it seems to me as a fan. It seems like every game it's either a second half come back Win for Seattle, or a failed last drive loss for Seattle. Would be nice to Win a game soundly every now and then.

Yeah that's something I don't like about Carrol's style, just too close on the weekly. I like the offensive pieces and getting a solid CB or safety isn't a huge task in a draft or FA (future). Team is in better shape than last season. Carson looks good and Penny almost broke one!

Hey

How did Weddle cut his head so badly?

Is it some kind of defect in the helmet?

I know first games don't mean a whole lot and that Miami fielded a pathetic team, but Lamar Jackson was phenomenal with 5 TD's (perfect passer rating and perfect touch passes to Marquise Brown) and it appears that the Ravens are putting the league on notice that they are not a one dimensional offense. On the other hand, both the Steelers and the Browns looked pathetic. Could be a fun year.

The fiasco in Miami is amusing to me. I liked them during their perfect season when I was in high school. I never liked them after that. Being a Bears fan intensified that.

Their rebuilding effort apparently involves throwing in the towel on this season, after moving nearly every veteran player. The remaining vets want to be traded.

Yeah, Miami is a team in disarray, that's for sure. I also remember those early years with Shula coaching ....Csonka, Jim Kick, Mercury Morris,Paul Warfield, Of course, the killer "B's" on defense. What an amazing team.

It should be a slaughter again this weekend with New England playing them.

One thing that you can't take away from Lamar, if you watched some of the replays is his touch on the passes while throwing into tight windows and his ability to find the open receiver when being blitzed. The Ravens play New England in Baltimore later this season as well as playing KC away in a couple weeks. We'll see how they stack up then. I'm trying to score tickets for the NE game...Ravens have always played them tight..(almost)...there were a couple of blowouts.  Right now, it seems to be nearly impossible to beat NE the way they are playing, lol, plus they added Antonio Brown, ta boot. Plus, NE has a very good defense....better than I've seen in the last few years.

If there was any team to go 16-0 this year, it would be NE, I'm sorry to say.

I remember the year before the perfect season the running back tandem was Czonka and Kiick and Mercury Morris was a just a return man. The following year Morris emerged as a premier speed back which complemented Czonka's power game, and Kiick mostly was a blocking back.

I also remember maybe the following season (I think) where Garo Yepremian threw a terrible 2 yard deflected pass on a blocked kick that Washington returned for a touch down.

It is a civil suit not a criminal case, which makes me think it's a bit shaky. You would wanna go for a criminal count if he were really guilty of doing such nefarious things. Civil suit = Money. I do not like AB, but looking at it being a non criminal suit kinda makes me wonder about the validity. It isn't strong enough to warrant criminal prosecution, but sure we'll try and get money from him...

So much drama n the nfl it's really a shame.

They both looked like bad high school teams.

Newton can’t punch it in on the goal line and he sure as fuck can’t pass.

He looked like a blind senior citizen out there.

Fuck the Chargers forever.  Fuck them.  Never blitz.  Let T.Y. from behind the scrimmage get a t.d. to force overtime and guess what?  Spread is 6.5.  So thank you fucking Rivers for that wonderful 6.

A piece of paper turned to, paper.  No extra points in overtime of course.  I will hate the Chargers for life and their play calling.  Never pressure the QB and always just rush four.  Great.  Fuck off.  6.5.  A piece of paper worth 380 and now it is garbage, like most of America.

Tough way to lose.  Would of been harder for the Phillie betters and that garbage touchdown at the end to beat the spread that was meaningless with something like 8 seconds left.  That one would of hurt worse.  Welcome to Casey world.

And Chargers, never blitz, ever, against him making this start.  Always just four, always.  Turned out well in O.T. in your shit stadium.  But for the fans that don't give a shit.  I would be a bit worried about your coaches even if Phillip can pull one out of his ass in overtime.

But what does it matter?  They won!  Yeah, no.  Good luck on the season  Can't rush four every play and rely on Rivers to take your dick out of his asshole.

Niners seem to be favored, not sure I agree with it. They stayed on the road after their game in Tampa last week. That plus it's an early start and Dalton had some decent stats last week.

Casey being Casey on a easy 2 yard pass and he bullets it over his receiver on a 4th down.  Like I wrote before, enjoy watching him Redskin fans.  Am so glad he is not wearing a Broncos jersey.

Cowboys are about to put this away where he can't even ruin it, lol.

Will Miami ever score?  They look like Detroit did back then and are capable of going 0-16.

9ers destroyed the Bengals! Hawks knocked Ben and Conner out of the game, a late Carson fumble made it seem closer than it was. Also the PI challenge was crazy.

Carson also fumbled before that which gave them a TD. Steelers made a bunch of mistakes and played horrible. Seahawks played better but also made a bunch of mistakes.

All that matters is 2-0 though. Teams grow and morph throughout the year but come the playoffs it's all about positioning. Unless you're the 2005 Steelers and just beat us from a damn WC spot, fuck the Steelers

Taking about fumbles. What the hell is the refs problem with New Orleans.
Another blown call resulting in a saints loss.

Now I'm not putting the blame entirely on that.  Losing Brees had a huge impact. And defense should have been better.

I like teddy b but it's a worry about our future after Brees retires.

Yeah with that D an no Brees, he will come back but of course it is almost retirement time.  Don't see a future with Teddy at the helm.  Wish it was Lamar.  His upside is so huge and I am sold on the Ravens though the city of Baltimore is shit, seriously, never live or visit there, just sayin.

At least Brees got one title to New Orleans and possibly last year if the NFL didn't want L.A. in the Superbowl but that is another story.  Got fucked over again by the dead whistle but really didn't matter after Brees fucked up his thumb.  If he is out for awhile season is over.  Glad they won week one but it might not mean anything IMO.

TBH I'm a bigger basketball fan than football. Still I don't mind watching it.  Being in Australia we actually get three games live on our Monday mornings. But mostly I just watch and read the highlights on bleacher report.

I'm so keen for NBA to start though. Bring on Zion!

Great fucking game! Brutal as fuck. Great read by Ryan on that blitz. Great block by Sanu. Great catch and run 4th down TD by the beautiful and brilliant JULIO JONES

Aussies I have met at hostels have been really cool.  With the time difference must be on tape delay.  God the U.S. basketball team sucked.  Congrats on your win against them.  I live in a city where the Jazz play in the States and we have Ingles on our team.  Donovan as well but Ingles is enjoyable to watch play.

Basketball in the N.B.A. is basically three seasons long since it is all indoors and they made the first round into best of seven and why teams do what they do during the regular season and why the top players stay out of this nowadays in the offseason.

Look forward to reading your posts in a NBA forum when the season gets underway.  Only professional team we have here in Salt Lake City so I follow them closely.  Next year should be interesting, Golden States time is done and IMO they would of won if it wasn't for the injuries.

But back to football.  The hype machine of the Browns, and the Browns being the Browns in week one, will be an interesting game to watch to me.

Well let us not get to ahead of ourselves as it was a half yard.  And if they match up with the Patriots again I doubt they will give them that many points to waste away.  They had their chance and I don't see another one coming for a ring.

May be wrong, but I highly doubt it.  It always takes until after week 3 for me to feel comfortable with teams having seen them play and the highlights.  Preseason is garbage of course.

Broke this rule and so now I observe for a bit.  Falcons do it they do it.  More interested in the Braves this time of year.

And making another vodka ginger ale.  End of Summer, bring on Fall.  That is the great thing about sports and also music.  I can go visit any city, or live in a city that has fans come in, and we can talk and debate, drink and have fun at the pubs.

I love this time of year when College and NFL is getting going and the MLB is nearing the playoffs.

Go Browns tomorrow.  Mayfield makes me laugh by his non P.C. ways but he is not an asshole like "the Midget" Manziel was as Marvin called him when that hype machine was going.  Not concerned about the midget I think was the actual quote which still makes me laugh.

Browns fans, Cleveland is a shit city but they love their sports.  Really what else is there besides the Rock and Roll hall of fame?  Always try to get them a championship on Madden.

Not saying you don't and it was a good W.  Enjoy it.  Didn't mean to be a downer.  I just don't trust the Falcons.  Atlanta is a great city.  Rest of the state is shit.  Enjoy the win and if they do get a ring that stain of that Superbowl choke on Jones and Ryan will be gone.  If not during their careers there, that is all they are going to be remembered for.

Ryan ain’t ever getting a ring

That’s why I gotta milk the regular season wins lol

Your Utes might get a pac 12 championship ring this year though

I doubt the Braves can get past the Dodgers but they are really good

The batting order is relentless and the bullpen is way better than it was early in the season

If the Braves get to the World Series I’ll probably get fired because I’m not missing that shit after supporting Atlanta teams my whole life

:wonka:Darnold (illness) remains quarantined while battling mononucleosis, but the Jets haven't ruled him out from returning as soon as Week 5 against the Eagles, Chris Mortensen of ESPN reports.  I didn't even know Mort was still around lurking about ESPN.

Lol.  Quarantined at 22 years old, wow. Mono. Poor Sam.  Make a speedy recovery and God bless.  I have never heard of that before.  God, who the fuck is their backup?  And yes, have to add another 6.5 for the Browns.  Buyer beware.  Just get the W.  Jets are done.

Educated guess is, they key in on Bell and blitz the hell out of them.  But this is the Browns.  Once again, no one knows shit IMO till after week 3.

West Coast living and cold humidity having lived in Seattle and getting back from Portland where it is always cold humidity even with three layers on at night, compared to the South and hot humidity where you can sweat through two shirts in a day is an interesting dynamic.

This is an NFL thread but if you follow College and the DAWGS I have always done well with them except in the big matchups.  They are ranked number 3.  Overrated or to early to tell since you are in the news cycle of the S.E.C.?  With the top four teams in the nation being in the S.E.C. of course.

I’m not a big Dawgs fan but we’ll see what’s up against ND next Saturday.

I think Georgia will win

Their conference schedule isn’t that tough

Could be another SEC championship loss against Alabama

I love college football but I don’t really support any one team. I just have a bunch of schools I hate and a few I kind of like.

I hate every school in Florida. Kinda like Georgia and Tennessee.

I like NC State and Kentucky (football not basketball)

I like Mississippi and Mississippi State and Arkansas

I sort of like Georgia Tech

I hate Clemson (always have)

I like Syracuse

I like Nebraska

I dislike Michigan

I like Colorado and Colorado State

I like Oregon State Washington and Washington State

I dislike Oregon

I dislike every team in California except Cal

I hate Texas
I dislike A&M
I like North Texas

I like Utah
I like Boise
I like Utah State
I like Wyoming

I hate BYU

I dislike Maryland

It’s all pretty random

We get the Sunday NFL games live starting from like 5:30am.
If you have cable then ESPN plays a lot too, even college sports

Im a huge New Orleans fan but for college I like Oklahoma. Actually started following them because pelicans drafted buddy heild. Football just followed from that. Big baker m. fan and the Kyler too.  And now with jalen hurts too. Seems a little unfair to have three QB that good replace each other.

Actually like wake forest in basketball since cp3 played there. Liked John Collins coming out of there too. And I was young but my favorite player all time was a demon deacon too,  muggsy bogues!

Will take an obvious choice for Wake with a guy that is a Hall of Famer Tim.  I like using first names because it takes away not what they have done but not like they are a idol or something.

But back to the NFL.  Yeah Pinata hit a 52 yard field goal in the rarified air of Denver and Denver is a lost cause but the way the offense is,  no chance they get 12 wins again and watching Trub, very shaky now and in the long term.

Instincts, Green Bay.  Should of rided them.  Yes they got their points early and barely held on but Minnie is an excellent team.  Things one learns when seeing teams actually play and ughhh, I can't let that Chargers game go.

Logic and reason compared to research and instinct.  Fear.  I knew, since time is an illusion one can actually sense ahead of time like I knew the Pats right off.  No fear.  Just jadedness.  And I hate that fucking organization.

As far as the Redskins I am going to name Casey the garbage time Q.B.  You almost did it Casey, you almost ruined it again.  But he never gave up man!  Never give up.  Lol.  Suffer Redskins fans, as Baltimore did with Flacco and the never ending nightmare that is a rotating QB and going nowhere with my favorite team.

They turned to defense.  It is how Dilfer actually got a ring.  Why Peyton did shit in a Superbowl I didn't even watch against Seattle then he got another ring because of the D and he did shit.

O.U.  They will always let you down in the long run.  Basketball and football wise over the years.  But I get why you are a fan of them.  I hope to God you don't live there though.:murray:

Hey Barnaby, what's the NBA thread that you're on. I can certainly chat a tonne about NBA. So pumped for it. But certainly keen on staying up to date on football this year.

It's funny I like most kinds of football (American, Rugby League, soccer but I don't actually like Aussie rules football. Or cricket. I'm probably the only Aussie sports fan that hates cricket)

How can you watch a N.C. State or Kentucky football game?  It reminds me of a guy that was a Kansas alum I worked with and he said to see the basketball games you had to buy tickets as well to the football games.  Seriously.

And congrats on the mighty Jayhawks and their awesome lost in the wind coach for breaking that horrible streak.

No NBA at this time.  Ways to go but time flies.  Is NFL and College "football" and MLB playoffs soon that I am interested in as a sports fan.  Kind of wish they would come up with a different name for it as football fits soccer but is a word that really doesn't fit the sport in the States or Canada.

Never really got cricket watching some it.  Kind of got the rules a bit but seemed like a boring sport to play.  Heard Rugby was huge there and have watched some but never could get into it.

But yeah, when the NBA season gets near someone will start a thread on it or I will and if you follow it always like to read or hear from those who are knowledgeable about sports I like.

Holy shit the 49ers dominated! Surprising. Play calling was dope, offense was on fire, defense was solid.

Joe Staley broke his fibula though, that's a pretty significant loss.

Greg Papa and Tim Ryan are a killer radio combo.

Brees and Big Ben have done well to stay healthy in their careers. I guess time just catches up to you. At least brees is only out for half the year. Ben losing an entire season will be hard to deal with.

Most Aussie just call it gridiron. Even in Australia there's different kinds of footy depending on where you live. If its qld or nsw then Rugby League is footy (which by the way the US team was pretty decent at the last World Cup).
If you live in Victoria, South Australia or western Australia the. Aussie rules is football.

I'm a Baker fan but he didn't have the most efficient game. He will get there, just needs get that field awareness sharpened and see the open receivers.
But if he and OBJ can build a good chemistry then the browns will certainly live up to the hype they received preseason.

I just want to hear Odell shut the fuck up about finding God and being "blessed" and just play the fucking game when he is that young and is just finding self awareness.  Could be worse though, he could be Antonio Brown.

I wouldn't complain about Mayfield in this one.  If he will stay healthy he will continue to improve and he made some really good passes.  Jets put up numbers, but the only one that matters is 3.  And a third string to start next week.

The way the Bears defense and offense is playing taking the "under" seems pretty attractive. How do the oddsmakers create the over-under? Is it just like the spread and they try to split the betters evenly on each side?

Same as the spreads.  Injuries, what the teams of done to that point, etc.  My brother used to bet at times under/overs and I get what you mean with the Bears but have always found it boring to bet on it.  I just like to take a winner or loser with the point spread.  Not root for teams to not score or score a lot.

He would usually do parlays like say for example bet on the Bears and spread and also the under.  Never think he just did the over/unders.  I meet a lot of people in Nevada that live off parlays.  Some casinos one sees the "professional gamblers" there each time one visits which is amusing to me.

Not including that for this though if you want to join in you are welcome to.  Might just reset it to after week three and start it for week four.  Starting to get to know the teams and what to expect like you are seeing with the Bears starting out and lack of offense.

I hope that makes sense.

And once again it is just for fun.  I can legally give away a gift certificate but not money though it takes money to buy a gift certificate.  I don't care about 50 dollars and it provides something of a reward for who wins if it is not me.  Those are the laws as it is for entertainment purposes.

Yeah they want a split and they look at tons of stats on past games, the weather forecast, etc.

They're saying Cam Newton might be out for the entire season.
Quite a lot of QB's going down early in the year.

Maybe Kaepernick will get a job. :laugh2:

Yeah, and a lot of teams need quarterbacks right now. The dude has definitely been blacklisted. The redneck quotient is still playing deeply into the mind and guts of the NFL.

Racism is real, it hasn't went anywhere and every race practices it. I didn't like Kaep before his political stuff, but he reached a settlement iirc and is done. Either way Cam's career is probably over, but he made a ton of money already and is still young so i'm sure he'll do well post nfl.

You really think the NFL is racist against black people?

That seems a bit absurd to me considering the demographic of the league.

Are old white billionaires racist? Is that a real question?

The NFL caters to dumbass rednecks. I know people who literally got upset enough about Kaepernicks kneeling to stop watching (for 1 season LOL).

You honestly believe Kaeprrnick got 5 yards from winning a Superbowl but is now somehow not good enough to even be a backup somewhere?

Kaepernick got 5 yards from winning the Super Bowl then got benched for future hall of famer Blaine Gabbert (where is he these days?).

Also he never got fired. He quit.

There are lots of people that want jobs in the NFL that don't have them. Tim Tebow, Manziel.....

The NFL is the ultimate merit based employer. It doesn't matter how horrible of a person you are if you can play football on the football field with the football they'll hire you.
See Antonio Brown for example.

Oh you mean when the 49ers front office destroyed the team and caused all their best players to leave or even fucking retire just to get out of there?

That had nothing to do with Kaepernicks skill level. We ALL know Gabbert is nothing special.

Tebow and Manziel actually suck. Kaep outworks both those clowns. And he doesnt go on coke binges.

And what do you actually know about Antonio Brown? Have you met him or the woman making accusations?

MNF used to be great but... it’s the money

Thursday is WTF... I don’t really care I mean whatever

Right now the top quality sports product in America in MLB.

The new trend toward strike outs and homeruns equals excitement speed and balance

The NFL all offense plus pass interference or holding on every fucking play sucks the dong

And ending every close game with a soft zone prevent defense I’m just sick of it. WWE bullshit

It's about the money and it involves the networks. MNF always had good matchups when they had the top broadcast team. When Michaels and Collinsworth switched from Monday night to Sunday night the good matchups went with them.

Back in the day, John Madden made a decision for good football. His network always did an AFC game and when the NFC got better he switched networks so him and Pat Summerall called good games.

I was reading that the league was going to put AB on this inactive list with pay. I'm thinking there was no way the Patriots were going to pay him to sit.

Antonio Brown to Pats

The NFL is full of fucking shit

Well, I was wrong...

Man, when I was a kid, Monday night football was like a 2 foot string of rock candy in my world. I looked forward to it all week. When Don Meridith, Howard Cosell and Frank Gifford came on with that catchy jingle, I could hardly contain myself. The commentary was not only insightful and provocative for the times, it was funny.

The half-time show where they went through each game that was on the day before was riveting. The way Cosell presented it gave me goose bumps. Maybe that had a lot to do with me being a 12 yr. old kid, but I loved every drop of it.

These new productions are absolute shit. Where do they even get these people from? Joe Buck is the only decent cog in the whole fucked up machine...the rest of the show is nauseating. Who the fuck wants to watch some propped up no talent singer do halftime?? I can't even watch  the shit anymore. lol, that's my rant for today....I'm starting to sound like the grumpy old man that shoes away trick or treaters. :oldman2:

This is fiction but Gifford is in the story

A Fan's Notes by Frederick Exley

Quote:

It was on Nov. 20, 1960, that Gifford was the recipient of one of football history’s most famous tackles. Playing against the Philadelphia Eagles, he caught a pass over the middle and was running with the ball when he was leveled, hit high and flattened by Chuck Bednarik, the Eagles’ rough linebacker and a future Hall of Famer himself.

Gifford dropped the ball and lay motionless on the turf as Bednarik waved his arms and shook his fists, an image that became one of football’s most memorable photographs. Bednarik later said he did not immediately know that Gifford was hurt, and Gifford himself said he considered the hit perfectly legal and bore Bednarik, who died in March, no resentment.

Gifford was carted off the field with a concussion, ending his season, and in February 1961 he announced his retirement.
He returned, however, after missing only the 1961 season, and his career had a resilient second act.

The novel talks a lot about that hit.

Read what he really did, unedited with the texts.  You think Bellie wouldn't know or the NFL.

SUPERMAN STYLE!  And the threats, and the all the shit, threats, and really, read the texts and see if you feel sorry for him.  This is what he texted, not a burner phone.  Never knew about that sex term.  Fuck him, and fuck Bell in your purgatory on the Jets.

Bell doesn't need to be included but fuck the Steelers.  May 10 years be shit for your franchise.  I liked the vid, where they played the horns of the those who had died on the battlefield to a candle and Ben was on it, meaning injuries.  Out for the year of course.  Made me laugh, compared to the real time of my Grandfather that fought in it so lay of.  It is a game.

So I suppose my point is.  Is the diva role of a W.R. ever going to end in the N.F.L.?  And I will always hate the Chargers.  Good win in Detroit Stafford.  10 points.  S.D. has always been cheap to Melvin and the staff they hire, they hired that pock faced shit coach Norv and congrats, you fired your MLB coach and it is a rich city. Despite the Mexicans to serve them.  And I have served rich people so really?  Put the white guys out front and the Hispanics in back.  I have no clue who their coach will be after this year.  But very few rich care about sports with the ownerships there.

And Mexicans make wonderful food and housecleaning and They have so many in the NFL, just kidding, so many in the MLB, just kidding, but that is racist.

Matt Ryan has a serious problem with interceptions this year.

Seems like it is always something with the Falcons. Defense banged up last year, can't score in the redzone, and now Ryan has interceptionitis. :facepalm3:

Matt Ryan has never lived up to the hopes (I liked him) coming out of Boston College. He is clearly a middle level QB due for decline soon. Since he has never been that good in the NFL the Falcons should start looking to the future sooner, not later.

His entire career he’s thrown devastating picks. They don’t reflect in his numbers but he’s always been prone to throw inexplicable picks. Not like trying to thread the coverage picks but just straight to some guy without a Falcon in sight. That shit demoralizes the defense.

He also tries to go through his progressions without adjusting for better defenses. This doesn’t really matter so much now because the window is closed but back when Tony G was there he refused to utilize him correctly. He had to check every potential receiver first. That worked great during the regular season but when aggressive exotic defenses started flexing in the playoffs he needed to just blast out consistent short yardage with the best tight end QUICKLY. Tony G could come down with it if it was thrown a little high. He was probably the best ever at doing that. Brady did it with Gronk on so many drives. But Matt couldn’t adjust his style. Always trying to be Peyton but his mind was never that quick and even Peyton kept it simple in Denver and got a ring playing within his limitations. Ryan’s career stats are fool’s gold.

I didn’t watch because I’m sick about the Foulcunts but Bridgewater is pretty good.

I missed the game too. Highlights didn't look pretty though. The Field Conditions looked horrible, just based on the highlights people were slipping everywhere. Carson another TD off a fumble, let up a punt TD, and so many missed tackles all game. Typical Seahawks loss to go down big early and have to fight all game to tie

On the bright side I still don't think the Saints are better than the Seahawks. Even with Drew Brees back I'd favor the Seahawks on any given Sunday. We'll probably get another crack at them in the Playoffs.

Seahawks should trade Penny, and draft picks for Jalen Ramsey. They need a play maker on the back end. Also someone should remind ClowKNEE he's on a contract year. :crankey:

To get off the Atlanta bandwagon, why, I will never no, Giants are playing it up in the media because a kicker missed a short field goal to win the game.  No D, Giants great.

Enough of Atlanta, they missed their opportunity and they will always be remembered for it.  Go off on the Broncos but they got a ring.  On with the Braves and another one and done series of course.  I have to make it obvious to the idiots.  THEY WILL LOSE!  Like 14 out of 15 years.

Fuck Atlanta.  Not a sports town. Seriously, people don't care.  Number one town ranked for singles so I guess that is something going for it.

Niners had 5 turnovers, 4 of them in the first half, and still won.

3-0 muh fuckas.

I’ve never been a Falcons fan but because of my geographic location they’re on TV every week. I’m sitting in my truck right now listening to them cry on 92.9 The Game about it.

There is nothing better to me than a Monday morning where the Braves, the Bulldogs, and the Falcons have lost.

Don't like the falcons either. But I like the hawks. Though I'll leave that talk for the NBA forum.

So only a handful of undefeated teams left. Who's going the longest before they get the L?

I'm kinda feeling Chiefs will be the have the longest streak. But I'm terrible at picking which is why I don't gamble.

I agree that the Chiefs seem most likely to continue streaking. Only a few games in, but they look really solid.

Niners get a bye then play the Browns at home. Monday night game, must have been more appealing when people still believed the Browns were going to be good.

Can't believe they were getting picked for the Superbowl by some people.
:loldongs:

Seems like hype with no actual justification is a trend these days.

So I'm going to say it now.

Jalen hurts = 3rd sooners Heisman trophy winner in a row!

It's early but if he plays like that every game then it's his award to lose.

Ravens defense is the worst they have been since the conception of the team....they are terrible in all phases and I don't see it getting fixed very quickly.

So I just watched the replay and it seems Ryan and defense are really bad. Quinn isn't the "defensive mastermind" people thought, Caroll runs the D in SEA... Looks like they'll need to draft a new QB and get a new coach next season. This doesn't look fixable and he already fired all his old coordinators so it al falls on Quinn.

Fair enough. But once Arthur Blank give that huge contract to Ryan, God himself couldn’t save the Falcons.

I love what Julio has done for us but his super high paid contract extension was also bad news. He’s often hurt and on the decline.

And our OC Dirk Koetter was a TERRIBLE hire. He ruined the Falcons here.
