Constructing a pole barn with loft *discontinued*
    #26085272 - 07/01/19 10:35 PM (4 years, 6 months ago)

Note* I am relocating and so I will not finish this particular barn -- although, I will be building a new one soon.

I will post pictures.

So far, One is cut with a notch for a loft beam. Debarked. Needs creosote preservation on the bottom for the ground insert. I'll try for two more poles tomorrow and having them planted.

Got my loft hewed loft beam notched and on  the sill. This is a Hardy loft beam.

did you do the poles yourself or buy them pre-made/sealed/notched?

i helped some folks harvest fir for poles, skin them, and seal them.  Then the idiots let them sit over winter, covered (outside, just tarped) sitting on 2x4's.  Needless to say when they uncovered them in the spring, they had begun to mold on the outside and the ends.  they wasted a ton of money on it and ended up losing the poles.

Using old wood and one new tree. Skinning them, possible hew on some, and notching them myself.

Just a redneck barn for free. I'm connecting it to one of my small fence enclosures so the goats can have permanent graze and I don't have to walk them back and forth every day to the pasture.

The materials being used for siding is all recycled wood my dad left behind. He was going to build a barn, but he died. Now I'll do it. It's shit wood now, but free is my style. As for the shingles, I may make wood ones with a froe.

Replacing a poll would be okay. I am pretty good at it now. I can fell, skin, hew, and notch a tree in a matter of hours now.

Probably gonna try creosote preservation with them with a bit of burning. Did that for my goat barn too.

Why do you think they got mold?

:highfive:

what kinda wood is it?

i would guess, as far as the mold, 1) it was a rush job; a second coat of sealant would have filled any gaps/air pockets the first coat did not, and 2) even though they were up off the ground under a tarp, moisture would have developed and held the whole winter/early spring (that part of Humboldt is a rain-forest and there was 90"+ rain that season).....but those are just guesses.

Raised two polls and did siding. Will have pics tomorrow.

I decreased the height of the whole barn because my initial pole was telephone poll high. I don't need that, nor do I want to work on a roof that high.

Great progress!!

Pics tomorrow.

Decided not to take the bark off. Doesn't seem necessary here.

My tomatoes plants are putting out, but dying. The same thing happened last year.

Maybe some sort of fungus?

Yours?

i have that racist on ignore, so you may well have intended to respond to him, but i'll go ahead and reply like you meant to reply to me about tomatoes.

Most of ours are booming, showing little sign of discoloration. Each plant has 20-30+lbs of tomatoes on them right now, and are flowering from bottom to top/making tomatoes all the way up.  Got one that has Alternaria leaf blight, so we may have to pull it, but i just diagnosed it today via the internet and didn't go over to the garden.  That would be tomorrow.  I'll try to remember the camera and snap some photos to upload.

My picture upload doesn't seem to be working yet, but I made a lot of progress.

As I am running out of wood I am making my own boards with a froe and several wedges. I tend to use dead and dry wood for this because I am not fond of felling trees unless it's totally necessary.

I am building several Gates. I use hinges and then I put a wheel on the end of the gate so it supports itself nicely. I'll be making gate #2 tomorrow.

It's looking good. I'll try to get a picture up soon.

I leveled off my polls and added my sill. I will be making the sill reinforced.

I'm ready for the first Gable end to go up.

Finally, the roof is going up and I can see the end.

Also started making a rock floor.

Built two gates.

Woo yea. It's hard to eat enough too. It's easy to get scrawny from overworking without enough meals.

I have to build another structure up North this summer, but it won't be near this size.

I made a shelf with some homemade dowel rods and a hand auger.
