Novelist Kesey Sentenced Again For Marijuana

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Novelist Ken Kesey was sentenced in San Francisco yesterday [June 30, 1967] to 90 days in jail and placed on probation for two years on a marijuana charge.
The author was brought to San Francisco Superior Court
from San Mateo County Jail where he is serving six months on another marijuana conviction.
San Francisco Superior Judge Joseph Karesch made Kesey's new sentence concurrent with the San Mateo term.
Kesey appeared in court alone. At his sentencing in Redwood City a week ago. He was accompanied by his wife, their children and a group of friends who arrived in a bus with a psychedelic paint job.

He had been arrested for marijuana in La Honda on April 23, 1965 and on the rooftop at the Telegraph Hill house on January 19, 1966 with Mountain Girl.

He was on the run for about 8 months before being arrested by the FBI on October 20, 1966.  His first trial ended in a hung jury on December 1, 1966.  His second trial also ended in a hung jury on April 13, 1967.  His charges for jumping bail were dropped.  He ended up taking a plea deal on May 2, 1967 and then was sentenced for both convictions on June 30, 1967, where the judge made both convictions concurrent.  He was released on good behavior after doing just four of his six months.

  • 1967:  The Who announce the upcoming release of a single to protest the sentencing of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards on drug charges

Quote:

The Who Records Stones Songs

Mick Jagger's and Keith Richard's convictions and sentencing on drug charges last week has upset many people in London who believe the two Rolling Stones were treated unfairly and framed. The Who were so disturbed that last Friday morning they rushed into the studio and recorded two Stones' songs, "The Last Time," and "Under My Thumb."
The record pressing plant began working on the single that same afternoon and tapes were sent immediately to the pirate radio stations for broadcast. The next day the singles were in the stores.
Friday the Who bought a full page advertisement in the London Evening Standard saying that they believed Mick and Keith were being treated as scapegoats. They also said that they intend to keep on recording Jagger-Richard compositions to keep them in front of the public until the Stones can perform again.

The Who version

In 1967, after the imprisonment of Jagger and Richards on drugs charges, the Who recorded "The Last Time" and "Under My Thumb" as a single. The intention was to help Jagger and Richards make bail, but by the time the single was made available, they had been released. The songs were rush recorded and the record appeared in shops in only one week. As John Entwistle was away on his honeymoon he authorised the Who to do the record without him and bass parts were overdubbed by Pete Townshend. The UK-only release reached number 44 on the UK Singles Chart.
