Let he who is without sin cast the first stone
    #2608059 - 04/27/04 08:55 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

Can someone in the know explain to me what exactly that means?

In a nutshell, Jesus said this when some guys brought woman who committed adultery to him and asked him what they should do (I think there's different variations of this because I know I've read one where they're about to stone her and Jesus stops it). Jesus says "haven't you all sinned" or something like that, and then he says the line "Let he..." It's supposed to mean that none of us are perfect, and we should all show compassion.

there isn't something that one person done that another (or even yourself) hasn't done yet. if you want to assign the idea of guilt and "bad things" then we are ALL guilty.

Annnnnnd I had a light saber and my friend was there and I said "you look like an indian" and he said "you look like satan" and he found a stick and a rock and he named the rock ooga booga and he named the stick Stick and we both thought that was pretty funny. We got eaten alive by mosquitos but didn't notice til the next day. I stepped on some glass while wading in the swamp and cut my foot open, didn't bother me til the next day either....yeah it was a good time, ended the night by buying some liquor for minors and drinking nips and going to he diner and eating chicken fingers, and then I went home and went to bed.---senior doobie

isnt the saying pretty self-explanatory?

It wasnt a parable or anything dude, he plainly said

"Let me who has never sinned case the first stone"

No one threw a stone, because no one there had never sinned before.

He wasnt wording it fancy man, that was actually a pretty clear statement

hmmm, it would have been more intereting if someone would have picked up a rock and fucked her up...by the way, was jesus' act saying by action that he wasnt perfect and that he too was a sinner?

Just to add a little more background to the story...The Pharasies (sp?) were trying to test Jesus. See, according to the Law of Moses an adulterer such as Mary Magdalene MUST be stoned. So if Jesus says, 'Stone her', he really hasn't brought any new teaching and is really nothing for the Pharasies to worry about. If on the other hand, he says, "Do not stone her", then he is disobeying the Law of Moses and they can have HIM stoned.

So Jesus' answer is so cool because he doesn't play into thier trap. His response is the NEW law of compassion and yet he hasn't broken the Law of Moses. Compassion subverts the Law of Moses and is therefore transcendent of it.

CleverName,

Jesus was the ONLY one there who was without sin and therefore worthy to stone her. And yet he did not. She in fact came to be one of his greatest disciples (although she isn't officially labled as a disciple in the Bible).

uhh, did anyone catch that? At first I thought it was comedy, then I read the rest of the post.

"let he who is without sin cast the first stone" is probably right. So why didn't Jesus chose to throw the first stone (being without sin and all)? Because he ain't got a problem with hookers.

Thats right. Hookers gotta eat. They gotta support their kids. Jesus loves them too, and knows they're just trying to get along. A bunch of stupid rednecks from two thousand years ago have some crazy problem with it (which, when looked at from a cultural perspective, needed to be prohibited, but today? Even then, 27 A.D., the population and gene pool was diverse enough that prostitution could have been allowed. The fact that it went on is proof enough that it wasn't devastation for the mate seeking women. Modern studies show that this behavior doesn't explode, or even escalate, when it is decriminalized. Regulation has made prostitution safe, accepted and enjoyed.)

If we could have just listened to Jesus, two thousand years of archaic prejudice wouldn't be history.
