I've never experienced not needing to mist if I'm opening it up enough to allow the pins to develop well. I see the pins get skinny and lead to small skinny fruits if I close it up to the point no misting is required. Regardless you should watch the surface moisture and ALWAYS maintain it

Well you'll obviously have to start misting at some point. In my experience I can ride out the first flush without misting. After that about once every two days, perhaps once a day maximum. That should be attainable in dry climates as well.

I mean, you could do a monotub with no lid if you really wanted, but you'd be misting like a mad man. The trick is to find the right balance between enough FAE and keeping in enough moisture.

I'd love to figure out how to do that. I've read pretty much every notable monotub tek and other notable tek on this site from the last 5 or 6 years and I've heard people say this, but I've also heard other experienced people disagree. My experience over the past few years jives with the latter. I use pasty's micropore setup and get my subs to field capacity and find that the surface moisture consistently disappears once the pins are all in if I don't mist at least once a day. Of course I don't just follow Pasty's setup it's just a starting point. Although I have found that the pins and mushrooms get skinny and shit if I don't go down to 1 layer on the top and 1.5 layers on the bottom of my 66 qt tubs during pinning. Maybe it's my choice of sub and environment? I've really experimented with it in every way I can conceive of and am stumped as to how one attains "set and forget" if they're doing it right.

Once the pins are in do you just disregard the surface moisture?

It's hard to tell what you should change to make it lower maintenance. Personally I use an unmodified tub per bodhisatta's tek. I do it slightly differently than he does in his tek since I don't have the exact same tubs, but the idea is that you create an air gap all around the lid, either by flipping the lid or by other means. Other than that I use a mixture of coir and verm as substrate. I like to work with high spawn ratios, currently I'm doing equal parts spawn and substrate.

Where I live relative humidity is about 60% - 80% in summer and I'd guess about 30% - 40% indoors in winter, which might make a small difference.

After pins come in I don't flat-out ignore surface conditions, but I mist very sparingly after a good pinset is visible. I've overmisted in the past, which led to aborts and mushy spots, so I err on the dry side now.

Once the pinset is in do you still make sure there are small droplets on the surface or do you let them completely dry up? At this stage I make sure the droplets are smaller but still there, and I let it dry out a bit more between mistings

My substrate will still be looking pretty moist and slightly glistening after the first pinset, so I usually leave it alone for the first flush.

Second flush and beyond I mist the substrate when it appears too dry until it has a slight glisten without any pooling. Then I just wait for it to appear dry again. It's hard to explain what makes it appear dry, it took me awhile to find the right moment to mist. There will be no more glistening, reduced condensation on the tub and the coir will appear slightly lighter. If you mist it and it appears dry again after an hour or two, then it's probably too dry and you need to up the misting frequency.

I believe I'm at a point now where I'm able to manage my specific type of tub correctly, erring on the dry side. But I'm by no means an expert or authority. If anyone more experienced feels I'm missing anything, feel free to correct me.

I use a poo, coir, and verm substrate. Coir holds a lot more water than poo from what I gather. Also I tend to err on the dry side a bit with field capacity because going a little beyond field capacity with poo can lead to trouble. I get it really close though. I think the reason my tubs begin drying out after the pins come in on the 1st flush is because poo doesn't hold as much water as coir. That's my best guess anyways.
