lid w/ only 4 drilled holes, no port. wtf!
    #26080093 - 06/28/19 11:08 PM (5 years, 6 months ago)

Ok.So, I'm just learning like many people here. I'm sorry if I'm asking a question that I'm sure has been answered. But I can't seem to find a post that answers all of the questions in my head-making me feel confident enough to go forward with my project.
So, I ordered some pre-sterilized and filled jars on ebay. I think I may have fudged up, because the lids on my jars have just 4 holes drilled in them. No self healing ports, no air filter, just straight through, air and whatever else  just flowing in and out freely. (NO WONDER THEY WERE CHEAPER. I'M SO DUMB TRYING TO SAVE A FEW BUCKS!) What am I to do now?
Also, I often wonder how much air is optimal for mycelium growth, both in jars and bags. In jars, should there at least be some sort of a filtered hole for air? And with bags should there be air room at the top, or as little as possible?
Thanks. All responses are appreciated!

Most pre sterilized substrate kits suck, but it sounds like that was just a rip off

Id recommend just tossing the substrate and making your own, if the jar is okay you can save and just create your own GE ports with poly fill, tyvek, etc and order injection ports online or make your own with silicone.

Was it grains or BRF?

Sounds like normal PF Tek jars
A layer of dry verm acts as an air filter. RodgerRabbit has some very in depth instructional videos on the subject.

I'm not even sure wtf this is..  looks like a mixture of kitty litter and the contents of an ashtray (minus the filter)..perhaps some vermiculite mixture???

so, I wld need a pressure cooker to do what you recommend?

Can you post a picture perhaps? It does sound like BRF now, but I was assuming it was grains, if it's brf you can potentially be okay to use it if it has a dry verm layer then it should be okay

1 qt jars filled with a grain. Rye grain, winter berries, etc.
Ready-to-go jars are not cheap though are highly recommended for beginners.

I went into your Gallery and saw one pic of a jar. Is that it? Looks like a PF Tek jar. PF jars do not require filters, the top layer is dry vermiculite which filters the air. The needle holes act as Fresh Air Exchange (FAE) holes.

Did you buy something off the internet and now you're asking the internet to help you figure out what you have purchased?

If you've bought pre sterilized brf cakes that you need to inoculate yourself then you should probably just poke the spore syringe into the holes in the lid and I hect approx 0.25ml into each hole, that's roughly 1ml spore solution into each BRF jar

That sounds about right for BRF jars, holes in the lid and no filters. Dry verm is the "filter" layer, you'll want to squirt spores down below that level. BRF jars are very easy to make (you can hammer some holes through the lids with a nail yourself) and fill (brown rice flour, verm and water) so give it a go soon. No harm in having more things on the go!
