I'd imagine you could touch the tip to the spores and not damage any at all unless they're on glass and you're pressing the tip down hard. On foil the foil would likely depress.

I use the back of the blade, I guess some spores are damaged but it doesn't matter as there are so many spores in the tiniest of clumps.

Do you wait for the scalpel to cool or touch it in the agar to cool?
It seems like this topic has a lot of different methods & techniques.

Definitely want to cool it in some manner. Touching it to the agar is a decent way. If you have a flow hood, you can just wave it around in the flow to cool it. That's what I used to do when I had one

I did manage to get some fruit out of this in a garden bed 9 mths later (only 2). . .
9 months?!?! You have very good patience. Do you have any advice for speeding up the mycellium?

Your right not to many people consider them a drug or go picking, It does seem to be gaining in popularity where I'm living especially among 16-20yr olds, at least consumption and hunting. I don't personally know anyone who grows them.
I know some pickers who just go for weraroa because they are easy to identify. They don't want to risk getting subs in case they make a mistake.
Dunedinite: Did you grab spores of those liberty caps you found? Was that found in a farm paddock?

Only one of them dropped any spores ae and I've stuck a bunch of those to plate.

9 months is quick for wood lovers. They seem to need colonisation, consolidation, resting, drying, soaking, chilling, expanding then fruiting . . .
The quickest way to mycelium ime is spore/clone -> agar -> grain -> wood -> garden bed. You may be lucky and have fruit in season in 6 mths, thouh loads will take 18 months.
Or you can gro cubes. . .

Noticed missing malt/dextrose from the list.
If you are making MEA (Malt Extract Agar) you will need LME (Light Malt Extract) known in NZ brew shops as 'Light DME' (Light Dry Malt Extract).
'Light dry malt extract' there are many options and any will do. There are many liquid options, use the dry . . . There are many levels of darkness, Use the light . . .
I bought 1kg last season and am nowhere near half way through it. 500g should be enough for ever.
Be really careful with storage as it is hydrophilic AF and sucks moisture from the atmosphere. Measure then seal air tight.
If you are germinating spores, many use 1.5% agar and 2% nutrient. This is 'soft' agar, and allows better hydration of spores. Inski, please set me straight if this isn't the case.
Also just in case $4/1kg Dextrose for PDA (Potato Dextrose Agar).

I'm not sure what others do, I use 20g/L agar and 16g/L light malt extract so my recipe basically has half strength nutrients, I use distilled water.
I guess with some older spore samples a softer agar may be useful but I've never had any problems.

Good to know.
I generally use 2% agar 1.5% nutrient, so pretty much the same. I thought most recipes suggest 2%, so I was looking at 3/4 strength nutes. Is the theory sound, that myc will move quickly looking for food, yet invading spores struggle to get a foothold?
For spores, I’ve used 1.5% agar to 2% nute, though invaders seem to fight pretty hard and am thinking 1.5%/1.5% for the future.

I'm guessing you could be done for cultivating an exotic organism - bit like if someone else imported snakes but you were just breeding them...pretty sure you'd be in big trouble with MPI (not customs).

Basically, if you can get cheap rye, go for that. Otherwise wheat'll be fine, by my understanding. You can also use popcorn or WBS. Whole brown rice works too afaik. Probably some other stuff can also be used.
