I wouldn’t say we’re all on the same boat. Some people have cancer, some people are homeless, some people have schizophrenia, some people were raped as kids. To say we are all on an even playing field when it comes to decision making and the ability to feel comfortable and content is silly

I don't know where you got the idea that I said that, but I'll try to explain what I meant.

We are all living in the same world. I didn't suggest we are all the same person.

Our only choice is to express love/kindness in order to better our collective situation.

We have to take responsibility for how we react to each individual moment, no matter our current circumstance.

It doesn't mean you'll be happy, or have to be happy. Only that love/kindness is your best bet.

Sometimes I think I got off track at some point in my life into intractable pessimism and might have succeeded at something otherwise. But on the other hand the optimistic successful version of myself would probably have been a much bigger asshole.

Optimism can be a tool. For instance, I've noticed that good things tend to happen when I'm in a positive mood, and the reverse.

One thing that has helped me stay in a more positive frame of mind is getting rid of anger at trivial things. Getting held up in traffic, spilling a drink, knocking over stuff on accident when you're already in a bad mood, etc.

I try to catch myself and say "Ok, will this aggravating thing that just happened be a big deal for me a year from now?" The answer is usually "No." So if it won't bother me in a year, why let it ruin my day TODAY? There's no reason. Smile. Why not? For all we know, this is the only life we get. Shedding negative energy has been very helpful, although I definitely don't always remember to do it, and sometimes can't pull myself out even when I do.

My mind is naturally a dark place, not depressed or anything, just my thoughts tend towards pain, anger, and worry. A large portion of my positive energy comes from being proud of myself for catching myself slipping and letting go of those thoughts when they occur and letting their negative energy slide off and dissipate.
