morels
    #2607567 - 04/27/04 07:20 PM (13 years, 3 days ago)

What is up with these things? I read about fellas finding huge batches way up in Ill. and Wisconsin 2 to 3 weeks ago. Here I am in eastern WV and I have just started finding a few small ones. We had a wet winter and spring with the last 2 days raining. Went today and only found 2. I walked miles. It seems as if we should get some way before the fellas up north. I never find large ones either. In a good year, I might get 12#. Last year was dry and I did poorly. The weeds and other plants have grown so fast this spring I have trouble looking for mushrooms in my normal spots.
I wish I had some indication of what the ground and air temperature should be for best growth.
Has anyone had any luck with the store bought morel spore?

Ground temperature here is 40-50F when Black Morels are growing. Air temperature fluctuates tremendously from day to night, almost dipping into freezing. Watch for the trees to first start showing signs of budding, best natural indicator besides the false morel and cup fungi...

That is strange because I can't find any until the trees are in full leaf and the ground cover is very high. It went into the upper thirtys last night and I went out this afternoon and found nothing even though it was close to 70 all day. It seems as if the northern morels are more tolerant to cold then they are here. I started looking in early April and didn't find any until a few days ago. I found 30 so far. My best spot has not had a single one yet. I go to all my spots every day and have been dissappointed so far.

hey miner,

I know most people won't tell where they hunt morels, etc. but... may I ask where you hunt for morels? I live in NVA and I'd love to have at least a general idea where I could look (VA or WVA). I promise I won't eat them all

thanks.

Are you searching for the Black Morel? I find them throughout the spring, until air temperatures are well into the 60's to low 70's. I am speaking about the first showing here. Soil temperature sample at my last hunting session was 45-51F (different areas). Air temperature was about 61F. The season is late this year due to abnormally cold temperatures, they are there, but growing slowly. Last year I was picking blacks with leaves on the trees. Watch for the rain and both soil and air temperatures early in the season, then go looking.

I bid you good Hunting!

I worked at Dulles before I retired and a friend would stop at a park somewhere around rt 28 and 66 and fill his lunch bucket with HUGE morels. He never told me where even after he transferred to another station. I walked about five miles today up and down steep hills and only found one and it was just below my house. We need some rain, the ground is getting dry.

hopefully you got a little of Sunday's rain. I'm near Dulles and thinking about the 66/28 area, doubtful that there's much more than new housing and business developments. I'll just keep looking, year after year and I'll find them eventually!
