Took survey, a bit repetitive in places but seems fairly sound.  It would be good to be able to add a description of what "other" is when "other" is checked.

frunco: Thanks

PrimalSoup: I did worry that going through the questions for each of the three types of experience - and the whole thing once again if you have cannabis experience, which most psychedelics users presumably have - would be stretching people's patience. At one point, there was an optional second round for a different psychedelic, but I took it out so as to not completely overstay my welcome.

Th hypothesis, at any rate, is that the differentiation between different types of psychedelic experience will allow for a better understanding of what really goes on in the life of a psychedelics user. My sincere apologies if the repetetiveness gets boring - I can only hope it will be worth it in the end

What I noticed is that the spectrum of effects can never include all of the possibilities - this is down to what tripping is, and not an artifact of the survey.  By allowing some input to fill in "other" one could gain more insight.

The repetitiveness was not too bad but I was looking for a way to say "said enough about weed, let's get on with the good stuff now!"

Also - well under "bad trips" (a misnomer) there's no entry for "thought loops", "existential condemnation", "gone to hell forever", and the other kind of cognitive distortions that people tend to react to badly (thus intensifying their effect).

You left out time dilation.  Combined with an uncomfortable experience, the perception of the sloooooooooow passage of time can be quite agonizing.

Eh, no...but you're right.  It's sort of implied in things like "I've broken my mind forever."

I was giving some examples not a comprehensive list!

Nice survey.

I think on the answer below, you should have 2 versions:

"Positive insight into other people and your relations with them"
"Negative insight into other people and your relations with them"

That way you can pick different answers for worst and best experience.

Also, the feeling of shame is missing as an emotion.

Just my 2 cents, of course.

Thanks for your feedback

Agree that fields for text input would be useful. Such data does not easily allow for quantitative analysis, but qualitative data gives deeper insight. Maybe with an appropriate survey design it may actually be possible to run both a quantitative and a qualitative study at the same time? Will think about this.

Also agree that when it comes to challenging experiences (/bad trips), there is a number of options that might usefully have been included. A comprehensive list would be long, though, and I wanted to keep the options the same for each type of experience in order to make them directly comparable. Shame might be a good candidate too, and is probably a big factor in some "existential panic" type of experiences. Too late for changes now, but I will keep it in mind for later.

At this point it is tempting to mention that I am running a qualitative interview study of challenging psychedelic experiences (as well as a study of ego death experiences and a study of telepathic experinces - lots of work to do!). If you are interested, send me a PM and maybe point me to old trip reports of yours. I like to ask a few follow-up questions, but it does not have to take too much of your time

Yeah, sorry bro.  I SHOULD have written "I would add to the list...time dilation."  No offense meant, just poor choice of words on my part.

I understood that...for the l o n g e s t  period of time.  Personally I really love time dilation, you can get so much work done that way...

Inspired by the feedback I have gotten in this thread, I designed a prototype survey for psychedelic experiences. It aims to provide a broad range of options for four types of "special" psychedelic experience, while also being open for qualitative text input.

The survey is currently short and sweet and should take only a few minutes. This is a test version - the real version will add standard demographic questions etc. If you want to test the survey and provide feedback, the link is: https://www.survey-xact.dk/LinkCollector?key=52LLWV96UK15

You can click where you want: the data you enter will not be used for anything. The survey is still fully anonymous and does not register your IP address.

I would love to hear what options may be missing from the given lists for various types of experience! It would be great if the list could be as comprehensive as possible.

Quite interesting that the university of my home town is doing a survey like this on an apparently global scale.

I would like to know more about what specific project this is part of, and the particular purpose for such a study.

Is it officially sanctioned by UiB? Knowing how utterly conservative the Norwegian academic environment is, I find
it kind of hard to believe.

The wonderful world of the Internet makes doing things on a global scale so beautifully feasible

The study is not part of any official research project with a group of researchers, but I am working with a supervisor at the Institute of Sociology (and another supervisor in religious studies). Its primary purpose is to deepen our understanding of psychedelics use, obviously, and secondly to provide me with material for publications so I can have an academic career as a psychedelics researcher.

I believe the utter conservatism of the Norwegian academic environment is somewhat overrated. I have been working at UiB with psychedelic studies since 2012, and although there are some raised eyebrows I have mostly been treated supportively.

Being supervised by university professors, I suppose you could say the study is officially sanctioned by UiB. Of course, most people at the university have no idea that the study even exists  I have been thinking about getting an invitation circulated officially among university students - which sometimes happens to other studies - but I am not sure how that would be received (maybe utter conservatism would rear its head at that point).

Well, basically I'm skeptical since, in my opinion, the study of these substances would require the people involved
in the research being aquainted with them and their effects, first hand. Especially concerning the tryptamines.
I would be (positively) surprised if this would be possible in Norway, considering the (mostly) negative attitudes
toward for instance the Johns Hopkins' studies coming from Norwegian officials.
