I firmly disagree, although we're usually on par with our advice.

His surface conditions look fine to me, misting and fanning is only going to throw the tub off course.

I genuinely disagree with that fam, sorry.

It does look fine.I dont fan and mist as a last resort I fan and mist while fruiting,  i don't think its bad advice. Why would it throw the tub off course?
If he drenches it he can get aborts but thats why we fan

Re: Check that pinset! [Re: bw86]

Because-

If the conditions are fine without misting and fanning, then why bother doing either?

Evaporation is a major factor in pinset, and that seems to be the fuel a lot of people use to feed the Mist/fan fire.

Evaporation happens naturally as air currents inside of a monotub move.

I just think if your surface conditions are fine, then why would you bother?

Misting and fanning in MY opinion is for when something needs to be altered about the surface conditions.

I have never misted or fanned (other than misting to rehydrate substrate after a flush) and I have had success- quite consistent success for a good time.

Id agree about manually misting and fanning, but it’s fruiting. That means I misted and fanned enough during colonization. I read somewhere that if you must and fan until you see pins, your sub has enough moisture to carry it thru the first flush. I do have a question though: do you guys think the humidifier is necessary? It’s been at 46% the whole time while I’ve been misting and fanning and it brought the Martha up to 70%, but I reckon it’s a little higher inside the shoebox because the hose is pointing directly in it.

I would give shoeboxes a try next time . You would be surprised of how low maintenance they actually are. All you have to do is mist when needed and fanning doesn't do shit. A martha is kind of pointless in a way.

I think you should experiment a little bit. After this Martha grow try shoeboxes and compare your results 😉. My money is on the shoeboxes..

I am very proud of myself!! One thing though: I actually am doing the shoebox tek. My Martha is literally just for protection against temp swings and my homes environment. I have a little heater inside to keep the temp at 78, and the humidifier, so really I’m not using it as a big fruiting chamber, it’s just my storage/temperature closet.

I think manually misting and doing the dubtub method would work a little better. I think you should finish it like this then do it manually next time 🤷🏻‍♂️. Experimenting is extremely important 👨‍🔬.

Re: Check that pinset! [Re: Shenmue]

I don’t see how misting and fanning manually, spraying solid water and trying to evaporate it by hand, has an advantage over FAE and keeping the RH at 80%. There isn’t an advantage, because I did just that on one of My other shoeboxes that’s running and it’s got bacteria in it. Thanks for the advice though!

Doing it manually when it works perfectly without that- is in fact, pointless.

I firmly believe dialing in your tubs is the most important thing.

If you know how to get things dialed in properly, why would you ever need to mist or fan unless rehydrating sub?

Re: Check that pinset! [Re: Trich]

because mushrooms are 90% water and they like water and fresh air.
Set and forget is one thing but if you have time to leave the lid open its even better, as long as you can mist...

Bw I agree that they like water and fresh air; however, if you can provide them with sufficient water, and sufficient FAE without having to do a thing- would that not be the better of the two options?

Doesn't this seem obvious?

I mean look at the flushes I get- Look at the flushes MANY people get. All without misting or fanning.

Are you that bored fam?

I also believe that if you know how to dial a tub in, why in gods name would you ever use a fogger?

That also makes no sense to me to be honest..

I am NOT trying to be rude in this thread. I am just trying to understand the logic here guys.

That’s exactly what I’m saying. There’s no reason for to mist and fan. The fogger is running continuously putting out a super small amount of water to maintain nearly 100% rh at the sub surface. There’s no need to mist and fan. The environment in my Martha is in fruiting condition, and the exact space where the tubs are are more precisely dialed into FC. it’s all good y’all. Either way, if I ever do return to misting and fanning, I’ll still store my tubs in my Martha to maintain colonizing temps. I’m getting a walk in Martha, 5 foot by 4 foot, anyone have any recommendations on a heater to use for that large of a green room? The fogger right now isn’t being used because I hadn’t gotten my tubs dialed in perfectly. They were forming overlay due to drying.

I agree with everything you said bw86. Just because he's getting results without misting doesn't mean he wouldn't get better results if he did. Even the trusted and experienced growers on here mist when needed. Obviously you'll still get mushrooms if you don't mist but the goal is to get as many mushrooms as possible. It just seems like pure laziness to me.

If you get flushes like this, would you still mist and fan?
I never said you do not need to mist; because if you have dry substrate- by all means DO IT. If you have wet sub, FAN IT.

I'm just trying to prove that 0 misting and fanning has good results if you dial your tub in properly.

All of us are correct for our own procedures. My tubs are dialed to the point where I don’t have to mist, but not to the point of set and forget. I truly appreciate all of it, and will use all of it in their own rights and times, but this post wasn’t really asking for advice lol

I love you all very much, thank you so much for the advice and acceptance.

Bullshit you straight up said it was pointless to mist lol! You got those results from strain isolation not because you have it perfectly dialed in.

I said earlier that it is pointless to mist when you have properly dialed tubs.

This tub was from MS transferred 8 times on agar. Call bullshit however you want, I just made my first clone of PE6 this week. I can assure you of this.

Thanks man I don't mean any harm, and I am not trying to upset anyone.

I am just trying to understand why mist and fan when surface conditions are fine as is? If you are having troubles getting a tub to pin? i know evap is a pin trigger. I just am having a hard time wrapping my head around it.

Maybe I am being hard headed because I don't do this myself.

Sorry for being hard to get through to guys. Not at all my intentions here.

I try my very hardest to be as kind as possible, it makes life so much easier! And I need mycologists friends. I need people to talk to and experiment and make money with and trade sores and equipment with. I’m thinking about teaching my younger brother to grow just so I can have a myco friend in real life

UPDATE: if anyone is watching, im having a bit of a problem... the humidifier ran out of water while i was at work and the sub dried out pretty bad. Theres bruising in a couple of places and it seems to have stalled the growth. i fixed my humidifier situation and got the entire martha to 98 RH, should this help or did i fuck it up irrepairably?

I know no one is watching but I just harvested, 5 oz wet. It’s okay I guess, hopefully the next one produces at least the same, and even that will only put me at 50% be if my calculations are correct. That’s what I get for fucking around with the humidity! Thankfully I got it dialed in properly and got at least a flush, and my other trays should do at least marginally better!http://
