Just for the record I have never had a ball lid or mainstays regular sized lid cave as seen in the pic above.  I've had a handful of the wide mouth lids cave but I attribute that to me forgetting to loosen before PC'ing.


It happens even with a GE hole. I have some that have SFD that have caved. When you stack 6 columns 4 high the bottom ones can't handle that shit. That's the most you can put in a 23 quart presto with the trivet and 3 jar lids elevating the trivet.

These lids bend only slightly. They have a very strong seal from the threads. You can shake Jars full of grain while hot and not have the lid fly off like the cheapo ball lids.

but I haven't had problems with the slightly concaved lids. Maybe a little harder to screw on and off but haven't seen any issues with contams. I don't use jars under my trivet.

I do 8 stacks of 4 per pc(32 total) and have used them many many times and they still work fine.

They have been through 2-3 dozen cycles at 18-20 psi. They got warped a few cycles in.

Have you had any small lids cave without the gas exchange hole?  In my personal experience the GE hole isn't needed for a plate.  It fully colonizes the jar bottom in a week with lid on tight.

I have some that are warped like that just not as bad but I see no problems with them.

Why do you sterilize at such a high psi?

These sterilize in 25 min at 15 psi. probably less

I always sterilize at high temps:shrug: maybe lower psi is better.

I've used these cheapo ball plastic  lids for pf Tek, agar, and grain jar lids. Grains go 2 hours and 30 minutes agar 45 and pf tek 45.

I just used my first of these plates. Came out with a ton of condensation :/
Must have made a bad seal with my foil. I tried to cake a stack of plates in a couple wraps of foil but maybe individual lid seals are better.

There not pp5 that’s why your having troubles..

The ones I posted above you are pp5 and they were still giving me issues with contams getting in under the lip. I ordered the holy grail’s but if you don’t want todo that just go with the glad mini’s, they are cheap and proven to work.

Just to add for those wanting to use these

To eliminate all risk of cracking anything when drilling lids or container for GE, eliminate the drill. Use a 30W soldering iron from harbor freight (4.99) or just use any piece of heated metal (hanger, solid copper wire, safety pin, paper clip, knife etc) to puncture a hole through the plastic.

I happened to already have a 60W Weller soldering iron and with the pencil tip I can punch holes in plastic pretty much nonstop.

I was gonna order bulk disposable petris but gonna give these a try instead. Is there a difference in thickness between the translucent ones and the clear ones?

Those are pretty much the same as I was using a few posts up.. they work but contams still get in under the lip of the lid if there’s too much condensation. Was able to use 8 out of 20 I made.

I just went to the 99¢ store and picked up some PP5 (hoping the lids are too) after my wife showed me one she had. The difference is that the one she showed me has PP5 on the container and lid, one I picked up has a green lid and only PP5 on the container, I’m about to find out if they hold up. I’m also throwing in some PET and PP5 2oz condiment containers for shits and giggles.

It took 30 ml of water to cover the hump at the bottom of the 8oz container with a thin layer of water. I guess the thin layer in the center (due to the hump) might make mycelium stretch out sooner. It took 12 ml in the PP5 ketchup container and about 8 ml in the PET ketchup container. I’m going to pressure cook a bunch of the 8oz containers with agar and 5 of each of the ketchup containers.


Let’s see what survives.

One of the ketchup containers didn’t even survive the initial microwaved agar pour, it was one of those new plastics (very clear, number inside recycle symbol was 7)...melted right in my hands, luckily I didn’t get burned.

The other 2oz ketchup container was PP5 but the lid was PET. I had to open the pressure cooker shortly after it started boiling because the pop up vent on the lid was blocked by a container...the container was great but the PET lid already looked like it was on its way out. That puts the nail in the coffin on PET.

The 99¢ store PP5 containers (clear, probably the same or very similar to the OP) survived the 20 minute pressure cook at 15 PSI...the Lids to these containers survived but they were green (still see through). they didn’t have clear lids at the 99¢ Store. I would assume the ones from the OP fit snug on the containers. The ones I picked up today were hit or miss, some were snug, others loose, and some very loose. I put cling wrap around every lid as soon as the PC hit zero and will let these sit for a while to get rid of condensation and to see if they stay contam free.

I’m sold on these containers specially if ordering the ones from the OP. I’m sure the lids would be more snug and even with shipping included they end up being cheaper than the 99¢ store ones (5/$1). Also, the ones I don’t end up using my wife can use to give away left overs after get togethers or to pack snacks.

Alright guys hold on to your britches I found the real deal heavy duty PP deli cups that actually have PP lids. There were some other brands of PP deli cups mentioned but they are not the heavy injection molded type like these.


8 oz size

or maybe a 12 oz taller size could tickle your fancy

12 oz size

or 32oz for bottle tek

32 oz size for bottle tek etc

I use the 8oz deli containers. 250case
Also the 2oz slime containers. It's even better than 8 oz cause they more durable but lot smaller
