If you have problems with contams on casings..check this out
    #2606549 - 04/27/04 03:23 PM (13 years, 1 day ago)

I just wanted to let everyone know a little something.  Everyone around here seems to use coir, verm, peat, or something similar for a casing layer.  These are definitely the best options.  However, if you are beginning in this art, or have been having problems with contams, there is a solution.  Dirt.  Plain old potting or top soil.  Right out of the bag.  I know it doesnt make sense, but try this.  Make some pf-cakes (i use pint jars),  and let them fully colonize.  Take a small rubbermaid, like a shoe box or a little bit bigger in size, and cover the bottom with soil.  then crumble at least one but up to four cakes on top.  Then, another 1/2" of soil or so on top.  Mist 10-15 times, then put the lid on.  Incubate for about a week, maybe less, checking the progress of the mycelium and patch casing when necessary.  Pretty soon after that you will have shrooms.  It doesnt yield the most, but I have never, ever, ever, ever gotten a contam in 2 years of using this method.  And judging by my constant failure when i attempt other methods,  I think it is safe to say, it is the soil that is making this so.  This is actually the ShroomWizard's method.  Everyone seems to knock it, but it works.  Not the highest yield, but it works.  Much love.

Bad advice to give newbies. Dirt out the bag with no
pasturisation or sterilisation is a big no no, and will give
you far more contams.
There is no way this will stop contams, just increase them.

I've used potting soil...it most definitely works(and without sterilization) but coir/verm is much better overall

Loki, you are wrong. Period. I dont know why it works. but it does. Have you ever tried it? Obviously not, because then you wouldnt be saying it doesnt work. I didnt even realize it until I started posting here, because everyone knocks ShroomWizard hard and is all about coir/verm, but Ive never had a contam using soil. Think about it, the mycelium can defend itself, so long as the cake is fully colonized. Not only does it work, but it works well. Not in terms of pinset or yield, but in terms of neglect. Dont be so closed minded. Its for people who cant get fruit, no matter how hard they try ok.

I wish psychedelic mushrooms were legal, because I would like to indulge in this amazing fruit of the earth. Unfortunately, I can only learn about this interesting hobby, and cultivate legal mushrooms.
