1/4 cup of water poured into one corner for a bottom water usually doesn't even need drained, and can be done mid flush with heavy pinset or excessive shrinkage... But again, dialing field capacity back a bit will eliminate a LOT of shrinking

Rehydrating before it shrinks a ton

Dialing field capacity back to prevent substantial shrinking

PROPER SURFACE CONDITIONS

sooo... Im a bit confused here.  you dial back field capacity to prevent shrinking but it doesn't shrink because there isn't as much water to evaporate. but then you need to bottom water later.  why not just have 'field capacity' from the getgo and forget about a bottom water?  misting should hydrate enough if your just going 2-3 flushes.  if your sub is hydrated properly you should be able to achieve proper surface conditions for fruiting with 1 light mist at birthing if any IME.

I'm using 2.75qts per 650g brick of coir and still pouring pools from the boxes after full colonization in some cases... I'm not having to rehydrate... I was suggesting it to help with sidepins in this particular case, where over-saturation and early shrinkage had already taken place... I usually don't mist, maybe once before first flush harvest... a lot of your approach will depend on your interpretation of "feild capacity ", your climate, the heating/cooling system in your grow space, and many other factors... I've gone wetter, and end up with side/bottom fruit, stunted growth with fuzzy feet, bacteria and mold blooms etc... much more consistent, maintenance free results just below what I'd consider the commonly accepted version of "feild capacity "... in my mind, if I can squeeze the coir and see water without losing any, it's perfect! That's for me, my process, and my environment though

your grip strength plays a factor as well I presume, lol!  I was  just wondering as it obviously is working well for you but we all have different conditions so I was trying to draw a distinction between what works for us all personally and a general consensus.  not knocking your methods. I love your grows caps!

That's an important distinction to make, and I'm guilty (though I try) of not always making it... Generally speaking, all we can say is:

Mushrooms:
-are aerobic (breathe oxygen)
-are phototropic(NOT photosynthetic)
-require some fresh air exchange
-require some moisture content
-require some humidity(NOT the same as moisture content)
-benefit from a 12/12 light schedule from start to finish (spore to spent)
-are triggered into pinning by full colonization and evaporation

Thx for the clarification: AND THE LOVE!

I have also noticed something like this. Even if you have it at field capacity, during colonization the myc "squeezes" out enormous amounts of water, most of which you can see condensing on the lid (and surface).

Cakes are great for finding good genetics to clone. I have shoe boxes going with nice but underwhelming flushes. This is pretty well to be expected of MS, but I have clones on plates from my first cakes that if I'd waited a bit could have given me much more reward per box than the MS. You'll do the same thing with boxes, just might be a bit more work.

I've noticed this happen  with some strains more than others.  there's definitely a sweet spot for them all.  I say make a batch with the standard method and then dial accordingly.  some strains I notice need much more FAE than others as well.
