Can they co exhist or do they kill eachother off like some species of worms. I dumped 2 left over containers of nightcrawlers in the garden area 2 years ago. He must have been from that initial dump.(or i just have nightcrawlers :shrug:) I put in a compost tube this year and dug all the worms out of my 5 gallon pots and through them in around the compost.

I live in AZ so it's always super hot. I wanted to have an indoor one but I heard they can be stinky so that option is not good for my living situation! I will for sure try in the winter

I have a worm bin in my kitchen area. It doesn't stink at all, it just smells like fresh compost or forest soil if you do everything right. I use a regular nontransparent bin with only a lot of tiny holes in the lid. The original idea was to keep the bin ventilated while keeping the worms in. This is especially crucial at the introduction of worms to a new bin. They take some time getting used to the new substrate, and they tend to escape while it's dark in the beginning. That's why I also covered the bin with tied together tights. I believe it's not necessary anymore right now, but it keeps other insects out too.

The bin is a closed system without a possibility to drain excess water, so I always have to make sure I add enough dry material to the worm bin whenever I feed them vegetables, fruits, etc. I like to use cardboard as well, and I will sometimes add dried manure. If the bin isn't overly wet, it won't go anaerobic causing it to smell. I only feed again whenever the previous food is completely composted, that way I won't risk heating up the bin due to hot composting. I once added some contaminated grains to the bin, which took forever to completely break down.

It really is a low maintenance way of creating vermicompost with scraps that would have otherwise been thrown out with the garbage. I don't have a garden so this is the ideal way for me to compost.

I live in a pretty warm climate myself and wanted to do something like this outdoors since I am rural and have the space. I kinda made a little raised bed and dumped about 2 gallons of worms in with a lot of straw and coir. They all either died or left within a week lol. I guess I needed to water it better but it was too far from the house. Summer here is 90-95f average highs with 100f+ about 20-30 days.

I never water my worm bin, I just feed it watery fruits and vegetables. It's more difficult to keep it from being overly wet. It's just that I sometimes don't have enough usable cardboard laying around. The bin doesn't lose a lot of moisture so no extra precautions are necessary during summer.

I think I will try again outdoors but use some 55 gal plastic barrels when I can make a little shade canopy for it. I have no trees or shade haha.

They will likely eat the mycelium because they're fond of moldy foods. Worms don't have teeth so initially micro-organisms will break down their food. That's why they enjoy crawling in their own compost which is full of microbes. I usually add finely powdered egg shells to my worm bin for the worm's gizzard.

I have tried to inoculated my worm bin with slightly contaminated panaeolus spawn one time. Nothing ever came of it. I did however grow Pan. cyanescens on 100% fresh unpasteurized vermicompost. This worked out fine without contamination, but it was impossible to rehydrate since it would turn to mud. The mini-FC they were growing in fell on the ground after the first flush though, halting the experiment..

Thank you for this great info! We don't have a garden either so I suppose I will go forward with this method in a few weeks, part of me doesn't want to fail and end up killing a bunch of worms but part of me is intrigued.

Bro I've been feeding my spent sub to my compost worms too! I did a bunch of Googling beforehand because I didn't know if it would hurt them or if they would hate it, but I didn't find anything, so I just did it. These guys love the shit out of some myc, it's nuts. They like the fruits and vegetables I toss in, but I think old myc might be their favorite food. They reproduce like crazy whenever I toss some in. I didn't know anyone else did that haha.

Nightcrawlers are okay for composting, and as far as I know they won't hurt red wigglers. Uncle Jim's sells European Night Crawlers and they don't mention anything about them attacking red wigglers, which I imagine they should if that's true because most of what they do is sell composting worms and equipment.

I'm super pleased this post is receiving a decent amount of attention.

I'm even more happy that a few other worm composters have spoken up!
*Poison Drink* and *Zenbie*  it's awesome that y'all are doing this as well. 

Worm compost is a great way to get rid of waste (although it isn't 'waste' if it continues to have a fruitful use).  And if you have a shroomy hobby then this is a closed loop cycle of resources.  I can't encourage you more to give this a try.

For anybody who thinks that their climate is too hot or dry for a worm bin, you can keep them indoors without negative smells or bugs.  Your bin can be whatever size/volume that fits your individual situation.

I can (and have) left my worms alone for nearly 1 month without any ill effect.  Very low maintenance.

Wow, awesome.
I've been wanting to try this for a while now.

With outdoor grows it is said that nature does it's own pasteurization.  I always theorized that unpasteurized worm castings wouldn't have contam issues because of the highly balanced microbial population.

I make my own potting soil and use a heavy amount of worm castings.  My potting soil stays moist and doesn't grown weird molds or sour smells.

The Pan. cyanescens fruited on 100% fresh unpasteurized worm castings. It wasn't a spectacular first 'flush' though, but it had a lot of potential seeing all those pins that were developing. As mentioned above, the worm castings would turn to mud when rehydrating so I would likely mix it with something else next time. That was last year though and I haven't really grown anything else in the meantime. A couple of days ago I inoculated agar with Panaeolus spores, so I might give it another go in the near future..

that is the first time i have ever heard of anyone growing them on something other than c/h poo.  Pretty amazing. I suddenly care more about worms
