My Outdoor Bed Grow Log 1

For years now I’ve been wanting to make an outdoor bed and I decided that this spring I’m finally doing it. Heres how I went about it.
I started with 15 or so quarts of spawn that colonized without issue but sat around a bit too long and was starting to look suspect. Some of it was even fruiting invitro.
I mixed it up with a coir verm sub I pasteurized with the bucket tek. I did a double batch (2 bricks coir, 4 quarts vern) all in the same bucket. I used a black strongbox (unmodified) and left the lid slightly cracked so it could get a bit of air. I left it in my shed. it was pretty cold in May (nighttime temps in mid 50’s) but the tub colonized fine. I spawned on 5/20 and by 6/1 the tub was fully colonized.

Once the sub was fully colonized I dumped it into a wheelbarrow and mixed it up thoroughly with 2 15kg bags of composted cow manure. My understanding is that you can superspawn like this at a ratio of 1:5 with good success. i didnt worry about moisture content cuz i will water this later and momma natures rain will do its thing.

Next I raked an shaded area under my yard down to hard soil. This is actually in the same area i have been tossing spent subs and the odd contaminated jar. people say trich doesn't thrive outside but here is a pic of some trich on grains that had been sitting outdoors for 3 weeks. you can still see the trich but I guess it doesnt spread the same while outdoors? Also, i've never understood why people worry about squirrels and birds eating outdoor spawn. There are tons in my area but they never seem to mess with any spawn i dump outside.

once the raking was complete i spread the spawn/manure mixture around. it was 1 or 2” deep and covered an area of maybe 10’x5’. I covered this with cardboard, watered it thoroughly, and forgot about it.

Here it is on 6/6, only 6 days later.

here it is on the day of posting, 16 days from spawning. A shitty out of focus pic, but the mycelium has spread throughout the entire bed. I couldn't help but include this pic of the lilac tree the bed is under.

Since taking that pic I've cased it with a generous layer of mulch. Nothing to do now but kick back and pray for rain.
