Is it really necessary to soak WBS for 12-24 hours?

Soaking in boiling water in a bucket for four hours and then boiling in a pan would surely do it and get them hydrated enough?

30 minutes is enough for a hot soak.

There is pretty much nothing necessary. Find a tek you like and nail it.Then you can change what ever you want.

I soak for 24 hours in the refrigerator. Then I heat that shit up and do the steam dry shit. Even 12 hours will stink up your house with WBS. The refrigerator is a way around it. Personally I'm done with wild bird seeds. It's a pain in the ass! It's not worth the 15-20$ you save. I'm done being cheap when it comes to this hobby. One way or another your going to pay for it. Just buy some rye berries man. Dude I just got some rye berries sent to my house from Amazon and it's so much better! I regret messing with wbs.

You realize you are combining teks?
12-24hr soak to hydrate. Boil to hydrate(I dont recommend for wbs). Hot soak to hydrate.
Pick one
The end boil is to help steam dry the grains when you dump them(also dont recommend for wbs)

Well it's not just me that thinks rye berries are better. They're less dirty, less messy, no sunflower seeds, easier to prepare the right amount for jars, better for truffles, more predictable, they dont smell as bad, look nice and even, possibly more reliable. Rye berries are better. I don't even think it's a opinion it's a fact. Wild bird seeds still work great and it saves money. 15-20$ isn't very much money to me so it's not worth it. I'm sure for some people it is. I guess we all have different living situations.

It is necessary to have plump hydrated grain with very minimal bursting and dry on the outside, how you get to that point doesn't matter

I actually disagree to a extent. I have a few genetics that I have grown on rye, wbs, and oats all tiger dropped at the same time from g2 plates that had the same mother plate (g3 clone). I prepped them all normal other then oats being on the dry side (I prefer oats to be dry). They conolized the oats by far faster then the rye or wbs but the wbs came in 2nd. I can say the tub with rye did produce more first flush then wbs though. It’s all subjective to what the particular grower likes and what’s best for the genetics you are using. But that is all just my opinion. Edit: I do agree about the smell but I only soaked my wbs the first time. I do not soak any of my grains. There is no point in my opinion. For wbs I just do a 40-50min simmer and bring it to a boil right before straining it. Works every time.

I normally just heat some water to around 200f and dump it on top of my WBS and leave it for 30min. Easy and fast
