How come most mushroom companies sell kits and offer lessons?

Looking online most mushroom companies offer grow kits and a lot offer classes. Is this because there is low profit selling the mushrooms by themselves?

I have less than $2 in one of my 5 lb grow bags. From that grow bag I get from 1.5 to 2 lbs 1st flush. At $10 an LB. I make $13 for every bag I grow. So the reason they sell grow bags in not because of low profit selling mushrooms. The reason they seel kits is to increase profitability. I would have the same amount into a grow bag kit $2 If I can sell that bag for $15 I can make a $13 profit without having to do anything but spawn the bag.

The more sales you can make the better. If you have the equipment for making sterile sawdust bags, why not put it towards 2 purposes. Selling liquid cultures online is another good thing you can do, or even making a popular how to youtube channel about growing mushrooms. You can also dry and tea bag lion's mane and reshie, and sell them at a bumped up $ per oz as "medicinal tea." Fungus are used for almost everything. From your carbonation for drinks, to alcoholic beverages, to kitchen cleaning supplies. The FUNGUS AMUNGUS.

That makes sense, I was just wondering why these companies were selling kits marketing them as easy an easy supplement to your income. I would've thought if it was so easy to sell mushrooms the companies would be selling them and not the kits. I would sell kits too if I could make the same profit for less work :smile:

The only real reason these kits sell is because they are an interesting gimmick aimed at people who don't know much or anything about growing mushrooms, those people are the only ones that would buy such kits, they probably don't have much success with them.

I purchased one :foreheadslap: the spawn came dead and I found mold in the straw substrate. They sent me a heap of new spawn for free and were very apologetic.

I've been growing for over 25 years and I recently bought a lions mane kit.  I wouldn't discount it.  I did it for 2 reasons.

1.  Sawdust is hard for me to supply.  A little work and I'm sure I can find it.  Plus, I didn't want to have to wait for a bag to colonize.

2.  I wanted to clone it and keep it going.

If I can sell a colonized block for more than it costs to make it and not have to keep it in my farm for fruiting; I will sell it. The faster you get rid of your product the better. Excess inventory will cost you money.

Kits are great, I sell them. People who buy them like to see how mushrooms  grow, how fast they grow etc. Often it is a family with kids and they like to show the kids where there food comes from. I think this is great.

My kits kick ass, if i do not sell them at the market, i fruit them so the kits  are always fresh and ready to fruit. This helps with good first flushes.

I have had many reorders from my kits and i have only been selling them at markets for a few months now. Some people have come back and purchased 4 different varieties at once.

You must sell them dirt cheap. What kind of BE are you getting off your blocks? How do you tell them to fruit them in the open air?

$30 each
People have been getting about 800g + for first flush. 2kg block.

Fruiting in open air- I try sell them when i can see pins forming in the bag so that when they cut the bag the mushrooms are good to go and the mycelium is not sitting in less than ideal conditions for too long.  If i don't sell them at the market i take them home and fruit them so the blocks i am selling are always fresh and the mycelium is at its peak. They come with a spay bottle, i tell them that the best place to fruit it is in the bathroom because of the extra humidity they get when you have a shower. have had good results from fruiting on kitchen bench too. Just don't put the block under a heater etc.

I have had someone put a block in an esky ( cooler box) with no light and no fresh air. They sent me a pic asking what was wrong. ME: you didn't follow the instructions, that's whats wrong lol
