Update 6/15/2019

My recent pan Alabama (aka pan bama) grow was nothing worth a picture. I did get over 50 prints,
with over 40 of those prints distributed out to the community, so that's a win in my book.

Today, I updated the OP with a pic from my latest grow, var. Australia. It's a first flush record
for me in terms of weight. Simply huge fruits. Unfortunately, mostly sporeless, so no prints this
time.

First flush came in at 220g wet, 19.2g dry

truly awe inspiring.

question: about how long from first pins until the sub is removed from the fruiting chamber?

Fruited on 6/5. First pins 6/10. 6/15 = today. 5 days.

sorry, i meant how long until the sub is declared spent and removed from fruiting entirely? or will that sub not be put back into the tent?

edit: apologies. answered on page one

"After harvest, I drench the casing layer (pour a cup of water on it) and put the tray back in the FC for another flush, which can come in anywhere
from 3-5 days. My record is 5 flushes. Nothing contaminated, I just got bored and had to make room in FC for new trays. Usually, I shoot for 3 flushes."

Oh, sorry. I thoroughly soaked the casing layer and put it back in the FC. I should
have more pins popping up in ~12-24 hours. If I don't I'll toss. Rinse and repeat for
every flush.

I've had 5 flushes before, but never on a tray that produced so much up front. My
BE tends be around 60-65% and this tray hit 40% on the first flush, so I am not sure
how much juice is left.

If you don't have pins after a full day, your sub is probably done.

So I transferred some of those plates that were moving slowly to some MEA without gentamicin as well as streaked a couple with spores. All the growth has picked up speed since going to non antibiotic agar. Maybe a little hasty of a conclusion but it seems pan cyans DO NOT like antibiotic agar. This might be useful for others. Will test this in the future when I have a good isolate to do side by side comparisons. Finally have some promising growth though

Awesome guide! Very helpful/educational and has me interested in Pans now haha. They kind of remind me of enoki mushrooms. I have a few small questions. When you do agar plates, do you incubate them at 78F? I've read that if Pans ever go below 72F they stall and won't recover, is this still true or outdated?

The mycelium growth form thing is interesting. I wonder why so many isolates grow thick/cottony and fruit poorly, it doesn't make sense for so many of the progeny to have a "non-fruiting" phenotype. I'd be interested in seeing if the agar media composition or temperature or something might have an effect on the growth form of a thick/cottony isolate. Maybe those thick/cottony isolates are adapted for different growth conditions and will become wispy/fruiting when conditions are what they're genetically suited for. My first guess would be to try boosting the agar plates up to 85F.

I don't do anything special with my plates temp-wise and they seem to grow out fine.
And to be clear, I don't know the fruiting potential outside of the parameters that I look for so I may be discarding good plates. I've just had trouble with the aggressive, overly tomentose stuff in the past.

Glad you enjoyed the write up.

UPDATE 6/21/2019

Harvested a nice 2nd flush this morning.

154g wet, 11g dry bringing my dry weight total to 31g so far for this tray. A new personal best for me.

Going for a 3rd flush.

The Alabama came from mary and I believe hers
came from VL. My print is at least an F3 but I'm
not sure to be honest.
