What do you guys think of using the internet to meet people?   
Here's my situation. I've been going to a very small geek college for the past 2 years, where I worked about 13 hours a day, 6 days a week, and only about 5 hours on sunday. 2 Years of that. Also, the girl/guy ratio was about 1/30, and the girls that were there were *very* um.... undesireable. No personality, angry, geeky, been-picked-on-all-their-life-and-have-too-much-anger type girls. The kind of girls that make friends based on common hates rather than common likes. Which I think is fucked up. Anyway, what I'm getting to is I've pretty much been completely absent from the dating scene for two years, and it's time for me to meet girls again. I'm not 21, so I can't get into bars. I go to the concerts I can, but so far that hasn't gotten me very far.  
And so, I turn to the internet. Back in the day, I was bored one day and went cruising around the net for girlies, and ended up losing my virginity to a girl I met online. But meh. Horny teenagers was what it came down to. I'm actually looking for a real relationship now.  
SOOOO what are your guys opinions on the internet dating scene? Is it worth it? Is it for sad-ass losers? Is it brilliant? What's a good way to go about it?

Just make sure you get a recent photo, and talk to them on the phone first so you can make sure they arent a guy.

Well it always seemed a bit strange to me, but I dunno. My father's friends daughter met her current fiance on the internet... actually I think they might be married now... go for it, but I'd say ask for a picture and phone recording to make sure it isn't a 60 year old fat man...

only thing ive noticed with internet chicks, is it seems to take a lot more time to find out 'they are crazy' whereas when you meet them in person, its a lot harder for them to hide the fact.

I've met a lot of cool people on the internet in general. Including lots of cool girls. I like it because I'm shy around girls I think are really cute, and personality is more important to me anyways. The internet lets me get to know someone a little bit first, so its not just like... i want to take you out cause I like the way you look type of deal. Also, I'm a heavy stoner so I've met girls on drug websites which already puts what is usually an issue in relationships rite out on the table. There are also a lot of subculture specific dating sites now, for example www.ravematch.com
Dont quit hitting on girls at the grocery store and stuff though. Good luck

Ive met a few people via the internet over the past couple of years...some have turned out to be complete nut cases, some were cool people and we have remained friends.
last peson I met turned out to be my soulmate..,Just be careful, let people know what you are doing and yep...get a recent photo to eliminate 6 foot hairy lumberjacks.

Just realize that a person's personality can be a lot different in person. I met one girl over the internet through another message board than the Shroomery that I used to frequent. We made plans for me to visit so I did. The only thing we had in common was music, that's it. But I didn't realize this just from reading her posts. She turned out to have a really bland personality and we had nothing to talk about. We ended up having sex the first night we met and I kinda regret it because, looking back at it, I really can't rationalize sleeping with someone I don't even like, much less love. We saw each other on a few more occassions but it soon became clear that nothing positive was gonna come from it so we stopped talking to each other. Just remember, you really don't know a girl until you meet her in person. She seemed so cool while we first communicated with each other over the internet. But then in person she seemed like a completely different person and maybe she felt likewise towards me, I don't know. We never really discussed our feelings or anything.  But I'm not here to say that you can't meet a great person online, it just didn't work for me the one time I ventured down that path.

I met the best guy I've ever met in my life, on the internet. From the shroomery, funny enuff. He means the world to me and I am greatful I found him. I've had some bad run ins in the past.Going on 6 months. Wow I thin he's the one too.Can see me with out him My soul mate.

i have no experience w/ the internet dating sites... but have met a ton of people from different sites... and have been in two relationships that came about from meeting people from the net.... one of those even started right here at the shroomery...
i would never go to a dating site... just like i would never call a girl from the personal ads...
but... i think if you frequent sites that focus on topics you like... there's no harm in meeting people from those sites... which can turn out to be a good way to meet someone from the site... or someone from the sites friend... or someone from the site invites you to a party where you meet someone...
it's not direct internet dating... just a way to find a scene where you fit and are more likely to be successful...

I too met my soulmate on the Shroomery. Hehe. Actually in IRC chat. Wow... it's been about 4 years since we started chatting and we've been together for 3. It is a long long long distance relationship - and we had our fallouts - but love has prevailed.
i don't doubt the internet at all. i would be very careful but it's no different than newspaper ads... right? i think the internet is better than a bar because u really can talk to the person - find out what they are like.
the internet is becoming very popular and im not ashamed to tell people about it. hell - my boyfriend's brother is getting married in Sept. to a girl he met over the internet - it must run in the family.

oh yeah... i should mention the story of my friend's brother...
he met a girl online.. planned to move to idaho with her.. thinking she had just turned 18...
wrong... she just turned 17... and he's like 27... so... cops and federal agents from several states came looking for him....
so make sure she's legal...
