problems with poppy sprouts?
    #2605075 - 04/26/04 02:39 PM (19 years, 10 months ago)

I have tried growing opium poppies before, and I just followed the instruction on germination.
But when they sprouted, they went all long and skinny like then fell over and stopped growing.
They did not even look like poppy sprouts.

I've got some seeds just sprouted this year, but fear the same is going to happen.

Anyone know what causes this??????????

the soil should be fine, I can't give them any more light.
They're outside so the airflow and temprature cannot be changed.

i've had that problem and the source, i find, was the watering. they are extremely delicate in this stage. by watering i mean, i would water too heavily or they would dry out by the time i got to check on em. this maybe a different in your case, but with me that was the problem. i resolved it by continuous mistings using a spray bottle with a an occasional light watering. root rot can be a big problem this early on so i tried to keep it very light. drying out can be a big problem especially now that it's about mid-spring. sometimes it can be hard to prevent especially if you have responsibilities during the day like school or whatever. i may totally wrong about the culprit of lack of success but i think watering hjas something to do with it.

hope some of this helps
peace.

They needed more light. And light soil with hay helps.
