How much did the 23qt presto cost with shipping included?

Ooh damn. I'm looking around atm for pressure cookers and honestly that's not bad for what I'm seeing. I know the lab I used to work in had a '22L Hawkins Bigboy' that we used as an autoclave. That was a research lab, so it was obviously acceptable, even without the pressure gauge :p It looks to be ~$300 though if you can find someone who sells it in NZ.

I have four, three 6 liter ones which are all different brands and one Presto 23 quart, one of my small ones has a tall lid which the 500ml media bottle fits into nicely.

I feel it's such a waste to use the 23 quart just to sterilise a bottle of agar so I'm very happy that my bottle fits into that small cooker, be sure to remember to put any tools you plan to use in with the agar run.

Bobbit can you fit a 1 L Schott bottle in the 23qt Presto? Would you guys recommend 1 big media bottle or a couple smaller ones?

Could I PC grains, agar and my tools in the same run? Or would it be best to PC grains only when I have a culture ready to inoculate them

I wouldn't recommend this cooker, as far as I can tell it only runs at 50KPa which is only 7.252psi, you would have to run it twice as long to sterilise anything.

It will fit in the 23 quart but I would recommend using 500ml bottles, they are cheap and 500ml will pour a sleeve of 20 dishes nicely.

You wouldn't want to do grain and agar at the same time, grain will take 1.5-2 hours while agar will only be 15-20min, the sugar in your agar will caramelise if cooked too long.

Yeah, I decided against that pressure cooker on Trademe it looked like it would just be a hassle and it wasn't that cheap, I got a Presto one of Amazon.

Cool, I see why you feel like it's a waste doing 1 500 mL bottle at a time. If I did say 2 or 3 bottles at a time will the agar remain sterile in the bottles for later use?

Good choice.

I like to pour my dishes as soon as the bottles are cool enough, you could sterilise a few bottles at a time but then you will have to store them in the fridge, maybe in a ziplock bag to keep them clean, you have to heat them again to liquify the agar.

Didn't realise you where a kiwi Inski, very much appreciate the thread Dunedinite.
Just finished my first monotub grow not too long ago but had to dial down due to a move.
Will probably dust off the jars and PC again soon...

Let me see if I can find some pics...

Sounds good, to liquify the agar could I just use the microwave or would a water bath be best. I appreciate the help

I don't really like the idea of reheating agar, I'd just pour when it's cool enough if you can otherwise I'd put it back in the pc for 15min to liquify the agar again.

Alright, I'll just do one bottle at a time.

When pouring the dishes I only need to completely cover the bottom right? Is the a right or wrong amount?

Not to derail this thread...
Just reminded me I hadn't had a chance to share these yet.

I'm still very low on the skill level tree but I'm sure I'll pick up a few things as I'm heading into the more advanced stuff.
I'll reference this thread as such.

One thing that seems to be in short supply or at least expensive here are the mason jars I use for grain, spent close to $80.00 on 5 of them.

K-mart has 500ml, 1000ml and I think pint/half-pint jars in packs of 3 working out at $2 each or less. It doesn't say if they're pressure-cookable but I don't see why they wouldn't be?

Yes! I went out today and had a good look around at what I can find. I found those Kmart jars! I suspect they're cheaper for a reason, but perhaps they're acceptable?

I also found $4.00 1000mL and $2.50 500mL 'Frutta del prato' jars at $ n sense.

Bin Inn has $6.70 1000mL and $6.20 500mL 'Perfit' jars.

Pak'n'Sav has $3.49 1000mL and $3.29 500mL 'Kates Kitchen' jars. They also have $4.39 1000mL and $3.49 500mL 'Perfit' jars (so fuck going to Bin Inn lmao).

Briscoes currently has 50% off all 'Quattro' glassware, so you can buy a pack of 4x 500mL for $14.99, 1x 700mL for $5.24, 1x 1000mL for $5.49 and 1x 1500mL for $6.49. I'm pretty sure Quattro is regarded as one of the better brands. They also have Perfit and Kates Kitchen and a bunch of other stuff, but being Briscoes is all stupidly expensive unless you can get it on things like 50% specials hah...

You can get 'Agee' from Stevens, but they're stupid expensive like Briscoes.

Otherwise I scouted all the op shops and they either don't have any in stock or, in the case of the Sallies, they sell 500mL Perfit jars for $5 despite having rust lids????? Wot lolol.

I did find that Arkwright's in Dunedin has a MASSIVE collection of Agee, Perfit and Mason jars. They're $9 for 1000mL tho. Although perhaps if you went in and bought a bunch they'd knock the price down. It looks like a lot of them are the oldschool ones too, so they're way thicker.

______________________________________________

Additionally, I checked out grains. Bin Inn here only has 'Poultry Wheat' for $1.90/kg which might be okay?

Aside from that they don't really have any whole grains unless you're buying bird seed, which is all mixed. I don't know if it's good to use as a result. The cheapest was 'Wild Bird Seed' at $3.50/kg which has all sorts of weird shit in it. Looking at the picture I can see wheat, barley, oats, raddish, sunflower, and 3 or 4 other random seeds. The others are also all mixes but are $4.00/kg. Otherwise it's all expensive shit like Linseed ($5.90/kg) or Millet ($7.90/kg), or Hulled Oats ($3.90/kg), which I believe isn't viable?

Mitre10
has 20kg sacks of Wheat for $34.99

______________________________________________

Oh, and Pak'n'Sav has 'Value' Methylated Spirits for $4.29, which is cheaper than elsewhere.

I've used a few different kinds of jar and have had minor issues with extremely cheap jam jars from the warehouse, kmart and Mitre 10.
It seems they are made of thinner glass or just have a lower thermal coefficient as they develop cracks after a few PC's.

I have found some cheaper ones that worked located at PakNsave and have yet to break one at $2 a jar.

The main allure of the genuine ball mason jars is compatibility, I rust lids pretty quick and occasionally the rings become worn out/bent and don't screw on properly.

That's an easy fix as the jar lids and rings can be bought by the dozen, also if I'm not mistaken quite a few manufactures produce after market lids specifically designed for mycology purposes.

The ball masons are just so nice, $10.00 for a 750-1000ml would be acceptable, at this point in time I think I pay $14-17 depending on size.
The half pint ones are $7.00, typically I get them at plant planet or on trade me.

looks like you've had a busy day!

post results about those k-mart jars, I eyed them up a few weeks back but decided they looked a little thin.

Hitting the second hand stores tomorrow looking for another PC.

I've got grains sorted, 25 kg barley for $30

Mate the soles of my feet and my calves feel fucked from walking around Dunedin. I did 18,000 steps today lolol. Apparently walked 13km....

Idk if I'll buy those kmart jars. As you said, they look kind of thin. As I said, there's likely a reason they're so cheap. I'll likely grab a couple of the Perfit or Kates Kitchen jars from Pak'n'Sav.

Where did you find that barley?

I guess it's probably better to just go for the better ones at a higher price than to buy the cheaper ones and have to replace them more frequently (or replace them at all...).

Do you know the brand of the Pak'N'Sav ones? If they have white lids, they might be Kates Kitchen.

I believe also that Perfit and Agee jars can use the various lids that Ball and other such brands can use.

Having specific, mycology lids would be super useful! Do you know what manufacturers these are?

_______________________________________

Also, syringes. Where do people get them? Supposedly you can pick up syringes from the pharmacy because it helps stop people getting AIDS by sharing and reusing needles when they're doing heroin  but I'm not sure they'll just hand them out or if they're any use for mycology.
