But they can... easily... both acid rock jam bands.
I'm listening to a whole show of the phish for the first time now (only heard a few uncomplete downloaded songs before) and I gotta say, this stuff is really good, really chilled... the music flows more smoothly with the phish... I find it so at least. Seems like more and longer jam sets. I'm not even going to put my own vote until I've heard enough of the phish for me to feel I can have a reasonable opinion. But I'm really diggin this

very very different types of music, in my mind. sure, both bands jam, both had fans who followed them around on tour, and both "catered" to the LSD experience... but in terms of the music, I would see them as worlds apart.
But if I have to choose, I would say for sure... never really liked Phish that much (although they do put on a great show!)

Dead >> Phish imo

they are so different, it's hard to compare them...I personally like phish more. But i do LOVE the grateful dead. But the grateful dead's music influences were different from what phish's were, they come from different times, different kinds of music. The Grateful Dead and Phish are completely different in so many ways...in some ways they are alike but most of those are pretty general. Like that they improvise or jam but that is so general. I love both bands....if i had to pick only 1 to listen to it would be phish. But i still love GD.

I think the question should be "would there be a Phish if not for the Dead?"

"would there be life without the Dead?" is the more pertinent question!

They're both mediocre jam bands that only seem good if you eat ungodly amounts of acid.

i don't know how to word what i want to say, it's hard to describe. The members of phish each had their own influences but i don't know exactly who and what all influenced them, but from my impression there was a lot more then grateful dead that they liked. I can't speak for them, these are my thoughts. This is a quote from the dvd Phish- Bittersweet Motel "I am a child of the 70's" ~Trey Anastasio (guitarist). He was talking about how he grew up in the 70's, and yeah, grateful dead was around, but there was led zepplin (sp? i always forget) and a lot of other stuff. And trey says "there are aspects of the grateful dead that i love, and some that i don't" Thats not EXACTLY what he said but something along those lines. And both are jam bands, but play totally different styles/kinds of music.
If grateful dead were never around, i think phish would STILL have happened, but maybe it wouldn't be the same as they are.
Either way, both bands kick ass and i love them both.
