I'm happy to hand out a few prints once I'm back up and running.

I don't think cubensis would be competing with native fungi due to its affinity to dung.
New Zealand has no native mammals except the bat.
I may be wrong.

I got a couple prints from a kiwi a while back, just assumed they where more common.
Didn't even consider the new organisms act, though do wonder how much water that would hold due to the many modes spores may be transported naturally.
I agree naturalisation down south is unlikely though I've heard rumors of them in the north.
Can't help but hope some cold resistant strain will emerge.

Your right not to many people consider them a drug or go picking, It does seem to be gaining in popularity where I'm living especially among 16-20yr olds, at least consumption and hunting. I don't personally know anyone who grows them.

I reckon if you source them locally, you wouldn't be hassled by customs for introducing a new organism, as you didn't, someone else did.

Fortunately I'm not a lawyer, so have nuttin to back this uo with...

G'day,
I'm from the Aussie cultivators thread. I figured out a lot of arts n crafts stores both retailers and online supply quite cheap isopropyl. Around $30 for 5L. I agree, not as cheap and handy as metho but for those who like to use the most common items, its just an idea.

Also linked this thread into the aussie thread for any stray members. Good luck!

Ethanol has superior sanitising ability and is cleaner burning. When it's the cheapest, there's absolutely no reason to use iso. Only reason everyone on here uses iso is because in the USA it's really cheap and you can buy it everywhere; supermarket, petrol station, cornerstore, etc. Meanwhile, over there, methylated spirits (denatured alcohol for them), is expensive and can only be found at hardware stores.

UrbaneCube, iso is NZ$16/L in NZ and if you buy more than 2L you need to give name/address to be put on a register. ISO is used in the manufacture of Meth here. . .

Huh, turns out that when I was told in my previous lab that "ethanol is far better to use" it was either a myth, based on a source I can't find, or based on price. We used to use 99.99% "bulk" ethanol, diluted to 70% on a regular basis.

But yeah, I can't find much comparing, but the very few references I can find don't show any statistical significance between the two.

Went out today and grabbed a 3pk of the 1L Kmart preserving jars. They look to be of decent quality. Nothing fancy. The glass isn't super-thick or anything, but it's not stupid-thin either. Seems like the normal mason lids should fit them too. Specifically they're 'Anko' jars.

Also went to Bunnings and grabbed myself more propane for my blow torch for $19.90 :hank:

Going to be way better to use than my meh DIY alcohol burner. Although more expensive, I guess. The full kit is $49 (Propane+Torch). A quick check on the Mitre10 website shows 400g gas to be $20 and the full kit to be $54.

Checked the local asian grocers also and they sadly don't have any fresh mushrooms, only various dried ones. I understand you can clone dried fruit, but it's a little harder. Might give it a shot at some point.

EDIT: Update on the MilmoreDown $0.90/kg + GST rye:
Quote:

courier costs are $18.00 (plus $14 for a rural delivery). You can use drop off points for avoiding the rural charge.

So for 25kg will be looking at $43.88 (0.90 + 15% + $18), which I believe is about what Bobbit paid?

Wow. I live on a different island and everything. Maybe find someone going past to pick up for you. Smaller amounts were cheaper to deliver iirc.

They do use a crap courier who consider me RD and I live in the burbs?

Still an awesome price for demeter organic 'rye berries' (Thats what dem americani's call em.)

Note that it says +15% which is +GST :P Not +$15, which is the rural delivery fee.

It's still, even with delivery, some of the cheapest grains I can find. Works out to $1.76/kg once delivery and GST are added in. The Mitre10 wheat is $1.75/kg. And from what I gather, Rye > Wheat, so it's worth paying that extra cent per kg!

Well I have officially purchased this threads recommended pressure cooker.

That shipping cost is 'living at the edge of the world' tax.
I think that's almost everything, I'll post some pics of my setup in about a month, once everything arrives.

Use an inoculation loop, and spread the spores on.

Dry, sticky the loop with agar first, or wet?

very start of this video you can see RR using a hoop to gather some spores and spread them on the agar. I personally prefer to streak them out, rather than just doing a blob, but

When you heat the loop, you're going to want to cool it down. You can touch it to your agar to do this, which has the benefit of dampening the loop to make it easier to pick up spores.

From what I've read, dry. You don't want to get the spore print wet.
Wet prints could grow mold.

Dry. You don't want water and especially not agar anywhere near the print, unless you're going to use the whole thing at once (you really don't need to unless you're making dozens of syringes or a shit tonne of plates).

You don't need massive clumps of spores either, you can potentially have a lot (millions?) of the things on the probe without being able to see them.

:whathesaid:
bodhisatta suggests the lightest touch then to agar. Kinda like LSD crystal, if you can see it, its more than you need
:alphabrain:   :triplaunch:

inoculation loop (interlab/crescendo links above) or a paperclip wrestled into a loop or a piece of copper wire, or, or, or. . . Anything made of thin metal that can be flamed to red hot, and cooled quickly.

RR videos show the process well.

    1.  Prepare receiving agar dishes in asceptic environment (SAB)
    2.  Place print in SAB
    3.  Withgloved alcoholed hands, open  the print, rememberring that gravity pulls contams down, so try not to expose the print vertically.
    4.  Flame loop to red hot!!
    5.  Breifly lift lid of dish to dip red hot loop in agar to cool
    6.  Gently rub cooled loop on print
    7.  Breifly lift lid of dish and gently rub loop on agar.
    8.  Rinse and repeat from 4.
    9.  Wrap plates before removing from SAB

Try to avoid too much agar on loop. Agar is nutrient rich and is a potential food source for mould spores.
