Nice! Are those Oak Ridge? I wast able to get them to germinate. Fuck knows why, tried a bunch of different agar strengths. Contams always took over before germination.

Thanks. They could possibly be OR, or they might be from an unlabelled variety I received when I started out. They look similar to the first ones I grew a couple of years ago. Sorry to hear about your contams. I can send you prints of these if you like?

Anyone interested I got my PC from here,
https://www.ozfarmer.com/pressure-canners-and-waterbaths/pressure-canners/presto-23qt-canner-preorder
only place I could find during late March (middle of first wave) took about a month to ship but works with an induction plate which is great
6 ball mason qt jars came with it (green lol) but yeah they have AA pressure cookers also and probably faster than waiting for murica to finish their chimpout.

I was looking at the foodsaver, but I think I've settled on the sico 250. It's 5x the cost but looks more versatile in terms of packaging types and more robust. I'm a bit of a buy it for life type.
I bought a 9 tray which was good as I use every second shelf with double mesh (at 90°) on each. . . The single height is fine for fruit etc. but not quite enough for mush

Thank you for that link!. Was the shipping $50 or $89.20?

Hey, there are a few of us about, but it doesn't seem to be that common. The Kiwibensis group on FB is worth checking out too.

Whoa, A FB cubensis group. I try to avoid that site (facebook) like the plague. I need to check up on my mate, see if they have any cubes for the summer, now that the season is finished.

Better to lurk here than there. . .
I noticed that the 'pro's' there don't like being called out for spreading old cult info. . .
You will find better info here in this thread. . .
Folks buying 75g of agar for $40. . . And 'traders' on their discord trying to sell Glass petri for $9 ea (3 times local retail). . .
Avoid paying silly prices on spore prints and send me a PM. . . The lords work is free in my world (well I'll pay the postage). . .

True – didn't realise there was that kind of nonsense going on in Kiwibensis. I left it a while back, but more out of privacy concerns about using FB than anything else. Always happy to help people to get a start in this hobby. Send me a PM too.

Anyone still active in here? I don't use FB or other social media, it seems strange that people would join facebook groups relating to this hobby - wouldn't their full name, photos, etc, be easily accessible to anyone? That's another discussion to be had, anyway.
Getting into this hobby is somewhat frustrating but also very rewarding, thank you for starting the thread. This hobby is teaching me patience.
I'm learning a lot about something I never thought I would have any interest in. The hardest part is not having anyone to discuss mycology with. Nobody in my life knows that I'm researching mycology and that's the way it will stay.
If anyone is still following this thread,
What kind of grains are you using?
Popcorn seems to work well and is easily bought but gram for gram it is comparatively expensive.
I'd love to try rye or oats but buying a 25kg bag is quite a commitment, lol.
Does anyone have experience with a tower air purifier?
Is the 23qt presto cooker still the best option for a 15 psi PC?
Fuck me, the shipping is more expensive than the pressure cooker.

The OP still visits shroomery, but doesn't update this thread or respond to messages 🥺
I'm still following and can answer your questions.
I use rye, and 25kg is certainly a commitment. . . Try TradeMe $3.50/kg. . . Popcorn works but it's expensive and way less inoculation points. . .
If you are even half way interested in growing fungus. . . You need a decent PC. . . The 23qt presto is the bomb. . . Make sure you check eBay Australia as well as Amazon. . . I found eBay cheaper, though it fluctuates. . .
Any further questions? Most should be outlined on the first page 👍

Thanks for the reply mate.
Cheers, that is a great source for rye. Now I can experiment without buying 25kg . Having more inoculation points is ideal.
I have a decent pressure cooker. It has been in the family for years and is older than I am (it was replaced in the 70s because it's predecessor exploded while preserving some berries or currants, I've been told). Just hearing about that has made me cautious about using pressure cookers. Safety first!
It's good but it's small. The 23qt presto definitely looks like a good upgrade.
No further questions, Bobbit, I was just checking to see if anyone still frequented this thread. Thank you for taking the time to reply .
If OP or anyone else is still reading,
Officemax is another vendor to look at.
They sell 250ml and 500ml graduated borosilicate reagent bottles which have pouring rings. The 500ml one cost me about $12. It's very high quality.
They also sell sterile petri dishes for approximately $6.70 per sleeve of 20.
They sell scalpels and blades as well.
I'll continue posting to this thread if I find sources for things like that.
EDIT: Wow mate, just checked trademe and there are some good deals on rye and other grains, thanks so much for the suggestion.

TradeMe is under the radar also. . . Beer brewing is socially acceptable 🤣
The OP tells you where to get petri cheaper (interlab/crescendo) and will match price as a minimum. . . Check then for media bottles also 😁

Might as well get a small scale beer home brew setup going then.
I have enough dry malt extract, dextrose and other brewing products to last for years, currently. It would almost be a waste to not use them.
That way I could justify to myself buying 25kg of rye.. its for brewing.. lol
Countdown sells 50ml portion cups, which someone mentioned earlier in the thread.
They are $2.50 for 8. That's alright and you don't need parafilm to seal them but the price adds up quickly.
Pouring agar in the countdown cups is easy but nothing beats a good petri dish .
If only parafilm wasn't so expensive...
