How's everyone doing in lockdown? I finally got my arse into gear for another grow mission, this time using great white monster spores. Because my semi-insulated garage is prone to huge swings in temperature, I decided to repurpose a broken fridge as an incubator for grain colonisation. Features include:
- a heat pad connected to a thermostat set to 25ºC.
- an internal fan to prevent hot spots.
- a low speed outtake fan cut into the top to provide some FAE
- always-on fridge light to provide a low amount of ambient light.

It seems to be working well enough, but I'm happy to hear any suggested improvements.
This is also the first time I've used rye after only using wheat so far. Oh man, despite the higher cost of rye, it's so much nicer to deal with than wheat! It's going to be rye all the way from now on.

I've only ever hunted with one friend who knew what he was looking for but I'm in a place I've never looked in before for the lockdown and since I have so much free time and there are mushrooms everywhere in this town (Ohakune), wondering if anyone wants to help me out I found 3 different types today that looked like what I found on google but so far none are bruising blue, any pointers for a newbie?

Welcome
If I were you, I'd join the Psilly Kiwis group on FB and acquaint myself with the Psilocybe of New Zealand document you can find there. If you come across any likely candidates, make sure to take appropriate photos before asking for an ID. Good luck!

Bodhibiscuit said: @psilocybiNZL For my reflux still, I usually run washes of 8 kg dextrose, 20 L water, and a pack of turbo yeast. To achieve ~20% ABV I let it ferment out over about a week. After letting it clear, I then run it through the still, which produces about 4 to 5 litres of 90% ethanol. I just follow the instructions on the yeast packet and the manual that came with the still
That's savage, how neutral does your neutral come out? Im running a modified essentia still with birdwatchers, get 93% on a spirit run, and its very clean.
On a side note, i hate to be a beggar but if anyone has a print or spawn i could pilfer off them, could ya flick me a pm. I did a poor job at storing my old prints and havent had any germ after three months on agar 😞

I just got my coral tooth spawn from sporeshift. Any tips on working with it? I also got some stropharia rugoso-annulata (winecap) spawn and hope to have a patch growing by next spring. I can recommend the native oyster spawn from NZCultures - grows very fast and aggressively on straw and produces lots of fruit.

Nice! Mine typically comes out at about 90%. The hearts are pretty neutral. The heads and tails, you definitely know it's moonshine. What mod did you make to your essencia? I'll have to give the birdwatchers recipe a try.
Also PM'd ya.

Last spring I tried expanding a bag of Sporeshift's coral tooth spawn to bags of supplemented sawdust blocks. It was my first time using sawdust and I've only got a SAB to work with. It was awkward as hell and ended up being a complete failure. So I can't help you there, sorry. Same thing happened with the shiitake spawn I bought at the same time. I'm going to wait until can get a flow hood before trying again.
However, the imported oyster spawn I got from Sporeshift worked really well for me on barley straw. I also bought an LC syringe of native oyster from NZCultures, but I had problems using wheat. Pretty keen to try again soon using rye instead.

About to put some NZcultures native oyster LI to grain. . . Going to 'noc some plates with it also JIC.
Shiitake are a pain in the arse and myco bags in SAB is torture and patchy. . . I'm trying shiitake with coir. . . Initial attempt in a half sized Agee jar really positive. . . Pasteurised barley straw was a flop.
Keen to add Coral tooth to the mix though too many projects on the go ATM. . .
Aucklandii just went to grain and making more oyster buckets. . .
Sorry family. . . Daddy is busy, distracted obsessed

Does anyone have a recommendation for a pressure cooker? Trademe has these: https://www.trademe.co.nz/business-farming-industry/retail-hospitality/kitchen-equipment-supplies/other/listing-2613478570.htm?rsqid=94c82d4b9ed6462ca1c11a67018cd99f-004 But they only do 0.5 bar (7.5 PSI) and I've read that doubles the time required to sterilize.

Thanks a ton for your help to get me started Bodhibiscuit!
My first ever grow is going fantastic. I started five half pint BRF jars from a spore solution I made from a print. 4 stayed healthy and 2 are now completely colonized as can be seen below. I will spawn them to coco coir in unmodified monotubs next weekend or so.
I have since followed Bodhi's advice and started doing agar plates. A bunch of them took off (straight from spores) and I used the fastest growing one to inoculate some pre-cooked brown rice bags (uncle bens tek).

Looking very healthy! What method did you use to make the spore solution from the print?
(Also, any tips for finding a Cubensis spore print in NZ?)

Reaching out to fellow Kiwis cos they might care (currently in UK). I've just tried using some plastic containers with a small hole covered in 3 layers of microspore take for my no pour agar. But how to clean them for reuse? Doesn't hot soapy water trash the tape? I followed a TEK by some bloke called Josex but this detail missing. Any clues. -cheers

@Kiwipaulie: Good luck getting those syringes thru. I don't know if any has had any luck with that.
Have you tried finding any New Zealand ones and growing from those? There could be spores floating around up in Auckland.
@Fuglywatapuss: Did you get your gear from the Nederlands? Sanitiser and pressurecooker? My friend used to use a a steamer for when they did (PF-BRFTEK) (Psilocybin Fanaticus- Brown Rice Flower tek). I don't think my friend has done Agar. I'll go see them. But there are some Agar users on this thread.
