@Inski, what kind of tape do you use? Duct/Gaffer tape? Electrical tape? Packing tape?

The tape is heavy duty cloth tape, I think from The Warehouse, when you rip it there are threads interwoven through it, the stuff I use now is a greyish-silver colour.

So you replace your filter each time you PC?

This year my p.sub inoculations of grain have all been really slow, and all turned green (the sub eventually eats the green though) which I assume is due to filter failure. Could it be a piggy back contam on agar?

This seems unlikely to my mind, though half this community think that you can have an intertwined contaminant that you can’t escape on agar? To me this would mean it is very difficult to get a clean clone from the wild. . .

There could be a contamination growing along with your culture on agar but when cloning wild specimens I usually only see bacteria, make sure you only take a small piece from inside the stipe, I prefer to tear the stipe in half lengthways then take a few sections from both sides, one piece per dish.

All of my cultures (Petris, Slants, Jars, Containers) go into new ziplocks directly after inoculation in the flowhood, that should help with any possible filter failure.

One mushroom which is particularly challenging to clone from wild collected specimens and isolate clean growth on agar is P. angulospora, it always produces clones which are extremely slow growing and irregular, I'm still not sure if there is a contaminant growing within the flesh of that species or not but I'm fairly certain it is free from bacteria, here is a series of images showing the unusual growth, I have now isolated some much better cultures but haven't uploaded yet, I'll add them here when I get round to it.

Cheers for the sagely advice Inski!

Cloth tape it is. . .

I can't bring myself to use a new ziplock per jar/petri, etc. My inner hippy screams at the single use plastics in this hobby.

I think my filter problem, is leaving tinfoil on jars, making my felt filters wet. The wet is letting through contams. I'm now letting them dry in my SAB.

Will see how that goes. And trying the tyvek&tape and polyfill lids for this round.

I had to go out last night before drying my rye properly, and put it back in the pot (which I had dried first). This morning, when I went to dry it in the dehydrator, I found that all the surface moisture had absorbed and the rye was perfect? Has lazyness made the long soak method more reliable. . ?

Nice one ArcadeDuck. Were those spores ordered from a commercial supplier? I've received all my spore prints through trading cactus seeds on Reddit with folk in the US and Canada.

Where did you source the rye Bobbit? I haven't been able to find it in bulk locally, so I bought 30 kg of wheat over the weekend. I'm sterilising a batch of jars right now. Unfortunately I had to chuck out a bunch of jars the other day that had developed white mold or bacterial infections.

Tyvek coveralls look easy to find and are cheap. Wondering if I should see how they compare to polyfil before committing to the expensive SFDs. I like the idea of putting new ziplock bags over jars, etc. Thanks Inski!

It was a trade on here actually to a nice bloke in the Netherlands, I'm pretty stoked with it tbh, thought customs maybe have stopped it cause it took a little while to arrive but they got here and look to be in good order

Epic man! i would love to get hold of some more strains if that would be possible! i just set up a 2 door fridge like the ones they have in Dairys for Milk, turned it into a Fruiting chamber with a temperature and humidity controller

Everything is Automated so i will just check on it once a day to make sure everything is stable, and i can view the growth from the outside thanks to the glass front

I'll have to post pics of it.

1. My 2 door fridge, Ontop is my heating unit which is just a heater with the backside silicone sealed to a hole in a tote and a hole in the bottom leading into the fridge.
2. My Humidifier setup
3. Ball Valve Line so i never have to top up the Humidifier
4. Shelves and Humidifier full view.
5. My STC-3028, showing the current Temp and Humidity, this thing is a beast and has made my life 10x easier when it comes to all of this.

I need a stronger Humidifier as i am using a single Humidity disc thing, i hear there are 6 disc options which i am def considering now, but i can still get >95% humidity as it is, just it takes a while to get there after temperature has been achieved.

My humidifier is similar.
I use 8 single disks from AliExpress.
Bought a splitter from a shop on the North shore, and a 24v supply (AliExpress) bought 3 extra foggers as backup and 20 spare discs.

Done my first work with Agar today,
Think it went well, used a spore print of Huatla and a syringe of B+ that I had left.
It'll be interesting to see if they colonize at the same rate in my incubation chamber. Only done 5 of each though.

Do you guys mind if I put up a pick of my shoebox to see if you think it's ok?

Typically people cultivate them outdoors using the same means as other woodlovers. This is due to their need for cold to fruit.

If going the indoor route, i suggest colonising soaked and drained woodchip at room temperature and then trying to initiate fruiting by introducing a day/night temperature swing of ~15C/<5C sustained for 5-10 days.
