You people and your many jars!

I am currently PCing jars of wheat right now and have this to say regarding the 3pk of 1000mL Anko jars from Kmart:

They are taller than Perfit/Ball/etc jars, so you can actually only fit 7 in the PC. It might be possible to get 9 in, but you can most certainly not fit 10 like you can with Perfit/etc ones.

Also, despite preheating the jars, when I put them in the PC, one immediately broke. Thankfully it didn't spill grains everywhere, but when I was inspecting the crack, the bottom popped off.

So, I'd personally recommend against the 3pk of jars from Kmart, even though they're cheap.

I managed 17 x 1L jars for $20 from trademe. . . Pretty stoked.

I think my felt filters are failing though, slow uneven colonisation :-(

Found these online PTFE synthetic filter disks and will ask the community if they will suffice. . .

What a great score – usually people want too much for their jars on TM. Most weekends I go on opshop missions and pick up jars whenever I see them. They're usually $3 for the litre ones. Still not that cheap but a better deal than new ones from the supermarket or the Kmart jars.

For those filter discs from membrane-solutions, you'd definitely want to contact them for a more reasonable shipping cost. The automatic checkout shows it'd cost NZD $113 + $63 shipping outside the US. Fungi Perfecti also offer those discs but for NZD $94 + whatever shipping is.
These ones look like a more economical option.

Someone in Chch is advertising wheat for $0.80/kg, so I'm going to buy a 40 kg sack from him tonight.

Took one in the weekend with the B+, there is a time and a place for crossing over, but not when you are overlooking the city.

Yep clean jars are the one. Don't be cheap and reuse those plastic pasta containers because the labels are printed on over half the side of the container and you can't judge the mycellium growth. Damn ghetto technique

Im in CHCH too Bohdi and Hefee! Probably know you both if you frequent outdoor parties.

The risk with that horse poo is that it is riddled with antibiotics

Are antibiotics likely to be a problem? I'm pasteurising a batch of poo and straw right now but it's taking its sweet time. I want to find a portable hot plate more powerful than 1500W.

I used to go to a lot of outdoor parties back in the day (late 90s/early 2000s). Then I went overseas for a decade, and meanwhile the quakes happened. Came back to NZ a couple of years ago married with kids, and both myself and Chch have changed so much. It still feels a bit weird being back here to tell the truth.

Ha, sounds very familiar. . . Outdoors trippydellic parties in the late 90’s, years in the tropics, back home, settled with kids. . .

I thought it was kids in here, not old men. . .

Antibiotics may or may not be a problem. I am just weary of stuff like that when human consumption is involved.

I've been back in CHCH for 3/4 years after leaving for 3/4 years. I'm enjoying it now that I'm old enough to be content farting round home in the weekends, instead of going out drinking. It has its charms here. Glad to know there is some other cultivators here in the city!

Yeah, being an old man (at 36) isn't so bad. And good old Chch still has its moments. I'm glad I got to experience being young here before the earthquakes though.

The more I've thought about it, the more I think it's best to stop faffing about with polyfil and mircropore filters, and just use synthetic filter discs. The only problem is they're not cheap to import. I'm considering ordering a pack of 100 of the 90 mm discs from Fungi-Perfecti. Because I only need about third of that, I'm happy to sell the remainder at cost to anyone who's keen. Anyone keen?

Incidentally, another source of bulk grain with free delivery within Canterbury is Lincoln Grain. Their wheat is $23 for 30 kg.

Funny. . .

I’m thinking of trying poly fill, as I have some, and my felt filters are starting to fail it seems. . .

What's the Price? i could be keen on some more, i only have 12, and am looking at making an interchangeable monotub kinda thing, so i can swap the filters with blockers for colonisation, with magnets and whatnot, if the price is good then i'll consider it

Before shipping, a pack of 100 is about NZD $93. I''m still waiting to hear back from them what the shipping cost is.

I got a reply from them today about the shipping cost. The cheapest option would be NZD $56 (!!). That makes the total NZD $149.63 (so $1.50 per disc).
I'll shop around a bit more and see if I can get a better price, but if not then I plan to order those ones soonish.

I've been cutting up the same Tyvek suit for at least 10 years now and it's still lasting and I've had no problems with it, I use heavy duty tape to fix a small square over a hole drilled in my container or jar lids like this.

I tried to find some Tyvek, but it does not seem easy, can you point me in the right direction ?

So you replace your filter each time you PC?

This year my p.sub inoculations of grain have all been really slow, and all turned green (the sub eventually eats the green though) which I assume is due to filter failure. Could it be a piggy back contam on agar?

This seems unlikely to my mind, though half this community think that you can have an intertwined contaminant that you can’t escape on agar? To me this would mean it is very difficult to get a clean clone from the wild. . .
