The benefits of controlled dumbassery (rambling and an electricity PSA?)

So I'm building a big ol' flow hood with a 7 amp blower, got it all wired up, went to test it thinking I was on an empty bank (turns out it was also the same line to the breaker as the dishwasher, fridge, and oven) - as you can imagine, the 10 amp fuse popped as soon as the blower got up to full RPM. Nothing out of the ordinary, unplug my shit, reset the fuse.
First the normal hum of high voltage. Then out of nowhere, gentle crackling like that of a high-voltage line arcing. Then it dawned on me - it was arcing. I saw a flash inside the box and obviously killed the entire breaker. I manually went through and found two that were causing the short or whatever it is and my electrician is coming in an hour and I'll let ya guys know the issue.
TL;DR: Very old breaker, very old mains, fuse (failed?) causing arcing in the box. Thankfully I was next to my breaker or I'd have probably had an incredible electrical fire.
If you have an old breaker, have someone look at it just to be sure.

If this should be in like Home/DIY let me know, I just figured this was more of a ramble than someone who knows what they're talking about instructing folks.

Update:
Electricians came, ended up having to replace the mains running into my breaker box. The wires were so corroded and split they were melting the insulation and arcing all over the place - they said the simple act of the circuit breaker toggling could have kicked it loose.
So extra reason to check your electrical systems, given this was no fault of my own and only discovered due to sheer dumb luck!

Here's the aftermath, this is (or was) the primary lead into the breaker:
