I can easily get 25g for $3.50 at Unimart, here in Dunedin. Otherwise it doesn't seem like many other places would be worthwhile? At least I didn't find any in NZ that would be cheaper once shipping is factored in.
Another alternative would be this, which is definitely cheaper overall, but requires bigger investment and waiting for shipping...

Sorry, is that $10NZ? If so, how much is shipping, surely that's not going to be less than $7.50?

Just go and check all the asian or indian food stores and ask for ager (or agar agar), they usually have some in stock.
You will either come across something like this

or this
Or something similar looking. Prices are between NZ$ 2.50 and 5.00. The long stripes are much cheaper per gram than the powdered stuff IME

Yeah, that top one is what Unimart has for $3.50. I guess I'll just stick to that until I'm getting more serious (and have more money), in which case I'll start looking at the bulk stuff from AliExpress.
Also looked at Health2000, they have 75g for the low price of $34.99 😂

Any 'asian' supermarket should stock telephone brand (well they do in akl)
Ask for 'ah-ga ah-ga' if there is no english, and show them 'agar' typed on your phone. $3.50 or so for 25g, enough for 40 plates.

Does unimart deliver nationwide?
When I looked ages ago it was not much more expensive (and way easier) to just buy pre-poured plates.
When I run out I might re-use them with self-poured agar though.

I wouldn't think they'd do nationwide deliveries, they're probably Dunedin's biggest/most central Asian grocer, bit I don't think they're that big. The Indian foodmart just down the road from them has the same Golden Cup brand agar (which looks very similar to that telephone brand 🤔) for $3.99/25g. I'd assume that you'd be able to find out at any Asian grocer for about the same price. I was just hoping to find maybe a online retailer that sold it cheaper per gram. It seems like I'd have to get it from AliExpress or check other Asian grocers around town, if I wanted it cheaper.

Thats about 10c per plate. Not sure you'll get it any cheaper unless you go crazy bulk.
Wandering eye, you can get petri from Crescendo or interlab
Pretty sure you can ask them for their 'best' price. I got 5 sleeves for $20

NGL, I'm pretty sketch about ordering lab supplies of any kind to my home... I'd rather buy PP5 containers from the supermarket and reuse them over and over again. Obviously much more expensive, but easily accessed and autoclavable so they can be used over and over again.

Personally I use glass petri, and sterilise my agar in them.
I wouldn't be too concerned about sending petri to a home address. Better to re/use pp5 IMO, though the whole plastic thing is beyond crazy. . .

Where do source your petri dishes inski?
Why do people not like ordering lab equipment to their house? Is there laws regarding it? Or do people just not want to invite any extra attention
I can't see an issue if I'm ordering lab equipment to grow edible/medicinal mushrooms

I mean, if I was only doing 100% legal stuff then I wouldn't give a damn. If they're not shitheels about it, then I might even just let them see to appease them.
If they show up tho saying "hey, we believe you're growing/in possession of magic mushrooms and want to take a look around", afaik, they're allowed to look, since they have grounds, or if they show up with a warrant (I kinda doubt this). Then, they find a bunch of mycelium, growing from stem butts and spores on agar plates/LC/grains... The stems would probably be the biggest give away and most easily tested, but I feel like the mycelium is kinda obvious too...
Just done a bit of poking about and it looks like one, if convicted of possession, would end up with community service or a fine, but I'm not so keen on getting done for possession/cultivation of a class A drug ae. It's actually really difficult to find any community law stuff or whatever in regards to cultivation tho...
I can imagine if you got caught importing spores tho then you might actually get a way harsher penalty just for breaking biosecurity laws hahaha. Fucking customs shows up at your house and slaps you silly.

They can't rock up and 'take a look around' unless you let them. They are allowed to walk from the road to the main entrance of the dwelling.
If they say "we believe you are growing magic mushrooms", you say "well I'm not".
They are not allowed to snoop, unless they see something obvious.
To convince a judge to sign a search warrant, you'd have to be up to a little more than stem butts on cardboard.
No warrant, no search.
If they invoke the misuse of drugs act, listen to the clauses they invoke (ask for them to be written down for your reference along with the badge numbers of the officers). Make sure they supply you with the reason for the search and the purpose, write these down also.
I reckon cultivation may be akin to manufacture which with class A is life . . .
