70% vs 91% alcohol?

While scouring my local walmart in the pharmacy department... all that I could find was the 70% isopropyl alcohol... I had two questions... will the 70% work fine? or do I need the 91%? if I need the 91% alcohol, where would this be found? **edit... I saw that CVS sells the 91% isopropyl... but my cat already got 70%... since its so cheap, should my cat just toss the 70% or use it instead?

i get 91% at walmart maybe they were just out.For the purposes you probably intend it for,70% is fine. But at my local walmart 91% is right on the shelf above the 70%,i use it for several other things where 70% contains too much water,so in that case 91% is better.

the plans are just to use it for a misting bottle and to sterilize certain surfaces (tables, jars, syringe, etc)

the only difference is in the contact time, 70% has more water than 91% so it evaporates more slowly.

So does this mean 99% alcohol is better than 70% alcohol? Or does it only evaporate quicker? I read someone post that 70% has more antiseptic use than 99% but this doesn't sound right to me.

the higher the percentage the less diluted it is.70% is 70 % alchahol 30% water by volume. 91% is 91% alchahol 9% water by volume 99% is 99% alchahol 1% water by volume. therefor if there is less water it evaporates quicker.70% contains more than enough of a percentage to kill of bad guys for most purposes.just get the highest you can.91% or higher is used for hash oil making because it evaporates quicker, and ther is less water left over.

Alchohol kills micro-organisms by dissolving into their lipid membrane and then busting it apart as it evaporates. It's possible that 70% alcohol is better because it has more time to dissolve in the membranes of bacteria, whereas 99% evaporates so quickly that not enough gets into the membrane to lyse them. Who knows though...they both work fine.

At work we make bacterial cultures on agar and we only use 70% ethanol. They tell us that it is the most effective concentration because the water content allows the cells to uptake the alcohol through the cell membrane. I would think 91% alcohol wouldnt be able to penetrate the cell membrane as the molecules are too big
