My first monotub grow
    #26024427 -

I am currently at one week from casing my first monotub. At the day six from casing, I patched it and replaced tape with poly. Misted the lid and fanned lightly today. Due to me still being an apprentice mycologist, I also literally sprinkled a bit of distilled water on my still field capacity casing - paranoid about sub getting dry, but afraid of water logging substrate with perfectly proper field capacity as it appears to still be:confused: Should I mist more?

Casing seems to be still colonizing.

6500k 23w cfl light is hanging above, at about an inch or two from lid on 12/12 on/off schedule. Room humidifier is placed right beside of the mono:heart: Temps are at 75-81 range, RH in mono is steadily reporting 90%.

Substrate was about 80-90% colonized and covered in hyphal knots heavily when it was cased.

Does  it look normal? What would you change in my setup? How long till first primordia and pins appear?

Assuming from still zero responses, I believe I am doing everything right:grin: I will not mist substrate directly and only heavily mist the lid (Wiping it with alcohol first to be sure), and make it more like in nature - like a little rain or something :cuteshit:

Looking good man, hope you get some killer mushrooms soon! The humidifier next to the mono might be a bit overkill. Way I see it any tubs should be creating their own humidity and environment for mushroom growth, an external unit providing humidity in the room I would assume would just create an environment beneficial to bacteria.

I usually try not to mist unless it is looking super dry, and when I do I spray above the grow and let it fall down gently onto it or aim for the sides.

You shouldn't need to wipe your lid down with alcohol . . .lightly mist over the top of the tub and let the mist gently fall down upon the substrates surface.

Many folks are not misting monotubs at all.  Instead, the tub lid is left closed and your substrate, as long as it is deep enough and hydrated at proper field capacity, will supply sufficient humidity levels through the first flush.

Your description of misting the lid sounds like old information - we use to mist all sides of the Shotgun Fruiting Chamber (SGFC) and then stand over the tub and fan it with the lid for a minute; now just a gentle misting and we walk away.

Congrats on your first bulk grow! Let us know how it comes along.

How should I mist sides of monotub with poly in holes? Trying to avoid contact with poly at all. I will first fan for a minute before misting next time :thanx:

Humidifier serves also for cooling surroundings. I moved its vapor direction away from monotub, but still I believe in it's benefit on grow room micro-climate (Which is also my bedroom, but it is ok, I have it always clean and never enter the room in shoes, or in clothes from outside. The windows are always open and there is always fresh air here. My plants like it alot:sunny:)

Personal opinion.... always case right away and immediately introduce to fruiting conditions. Saves you a week on pinning time and provides a greater number of flushes due to the lack of competition from mold. Trichoderma, penicillium and rhizopus specifically love to grow in moist dark non aerated environments (the "consolidation period" all these crazies keep referring to in their "proven" "TEK's" which are not a thing in nature).

Looks healthy though. keep at it and good luck.

Don't tape the liner to the tub, it defeats the purpose of the liner! The liner needs to be free so it can shrink along with the substrate as it shrinks. Just my tip. And as mentioned above, make sure to mist from above and let it rain down very lightly as to not bruise the mycelium. I also say the humidifier is overkill unless you are growing beds of shrooms in open air. The idea of the monotub is to create the ideal micro climate for the mushrooms to grow, changing the open air conditions, other than the temperature is pointless imo.

Stop patching the casing. Just let the mycelium work. You shouldn't have to worry about anything drying out. I would stop misting until pinning starts and Even then I'd only mist once or twice during the first flush.

You're on the way to success. Just be patient and watch it happen. If you need help occupying the mean time, start a new grow!

Will the substrate shrink this much? The bag is taped above the level of surface and I think, logically it won't disturb shrinking process of substrate  Also, what if I cut the trashbag accidentally?

Main reason for taping heavily was to avoid water condensation between trashbag and walls. As I see it now, it still condenses but it could be worse right? And does water in there lead to contamination risk?

Humidifier is traveling around my room between monotub and plants  :cuddles:  and serves also as a cooler - dropping temps for about 2-3 degrees.

I also have second monotub colonizing still uncased. I opened it today as I mistakenly spotted a pin on surface. Temps of second mono are about 80-84 degrees throughout the day (it is on top of the table, underside of which the first mono is) so I plan to place ice bottles around them. I plan to fruit by the help of ice-bottles.

Photos of second monotub. 9 days in colonization. Should mycelium look like this or is this a mold? What are these white hairs, is this normal? I am still paranoid about this:confused:

My analogue hygrometer is showing 70-80% rh today and misting is first that comes in mind for rising it to desired 90%. Though It was showing 90%-100% on digital hygrometer. It's screen goes unreadable after awhile in high RH environment so I switched to analogue one. Sadly, I have no resources for new hygrometer - all of my budget is concentrated for lowering temperatures for good. I watch surface closely for drying signs and it looks right about at field capacity for me.

I moved my tubs to more cooler room. Temperature at surface level is about 76-82 degrees. I am about to build a portable air conditioner from ice box, cooler and air duct tomorrow, which should effectively reduce my temperatures to optimal level for pining/fruiting.

Without AC, my ambient summer temperatures can go as high as 90-92 degrees indoors  in July. What kind of cooling do you use in your grow area during summertime?

If you are in the Midwest or else a dryer climate, swamp coolers can work very well to cool and humidify:

This is what I put into my gourmet.grow chamber back when I first built my farm.

It uses a float valve, a sprinkler head, swamp cooler mesh, a couple 5 gallon buckets, a Monotub sized tub, some duct pieces and a nice blower...also an aquarium pump

Nice device to have, but the parts would be too hard to get for me. I will stick with simple ice cooler design in combination with low wattage ultrasonic humidifier.

Back to the casing layer.
I have read about wax paper loosely laid on casing layer to hold the microclimate for mushroom formation. Have you used it with your cased monotubs? I am cautious about touching my casing layer.

24 days after first spawn mixing, 9 days from casing, 3 days since patching and introduction of fruiting conditions (except temperature), 1st day of temperature drop from 80-86 to ~75-80. Is this fruiting temperature range ok for tropical species? According to google, natural fruiting conditions for them are 71-79. I will build cooler tomorrow so I hope to cool it down all the way to 72 or lower. I mist the lid lightly and fan for 3 minutes 3 times per day. RH drops to 50-60%, but I hope this won't affect the sub.

Temperatures are naturally uneven over monotubs - window-facing side has higher temperatures. I wonder, how will this affect mushroom formation and when will I finally see them with my eyes:mushroom:

If I put a wax paper on my casing, wouldn't it cause unbreathable conditions for mycelium and pins? What if I poke many 2mm holes with a nail in the wax paper? Google gave no results about crumpled/uncrumpled wax paper with tiny holes over casing layer.

I have found this in my home accidentally. Is this even a good wax paper? Doesn't seem to be affected by crumbling and feels slightly rubberish, although waxy on touch I think:crazy: I am inexperienced with wax paper.

TL:DR Is this kind of wax paper with many tiny holes (for FAE) ok to be placed over casing layer? Or making holes in it defeats it's purpose?

Pics of second tub, 15 days after spawning 3.5 quart jars.  I plan to not case it at all. Casing has failed my expectations on first tub.

I hope the color difference represents how thickly colonized the substrate is.

Do any of this look like they will grow pins anytime soon?

Contaminants turning brown/black. Mycelium is still alive and should be fighting back the contamination. Catastrophe happened because 1st monotub got infested with fungus gnats 5 days ago - I left it opened while doing other maintenance job. I sprayed  it heavily with 0.23% peroxide solution which effectively exterminated the evil. This might caused some mycelium to die and contams to appear in their place. Correct me if there are errors in my logic.

So, Shroomery people, I am doing my 3rd batch of jars tomorrow by G2G transfer and I have still not seen a single mushroom at all! But I am getting fanatic when it is about saving my culture for centuries. I plan to do a GLC on water &  on honey LC. Is there a way to transfer from grain to agar I wonder. I will definitely research it.

Shitty mold still growing on casing of 1st monotub, but 2nd monotub is showing all signs of healthy 100% colonization by the mycelium and getting whiter and thicker day by day. It is in fruiting conditions 5-7 days already. How long till pins will appear? Temps are in 75-80 range. Ventilation of this tube is apparently great, so I didn't misted or fanned it at all last 3 days. It is sitting in front of AC. I clean filters regularly. Do you think it is normal? Otherwise temps would rise to 86 and higher.

Here I go again :hi: Three days ago I finally saw some results of my project. This is the biggest pin detected yet. There are some more but I am trying to not disturb my tub by taking lid of for more detailed photography.

But there is almost no visible growth since they appeared 3 days ago. Is this normal way of things? She got a tiny bit ticker but it may be my imagination

They have plenty of FAE through 12 1" holes with polyfill, AC is working in room in combination with humidifier. Temperatures are 75-80. Night is warmer, because AC is off during the night. At my attempt for regular misting & fanning, mycelium at edges started to turn blue and I immediately stopped disturbing my tub. You can tell that polyfill provides plenty of FAE by looking at dry walls around them.
Here it is:

Prior to that, all of surface of my uncased substrate got covered by snowy white mycelium almost completely. My peat can be too acidic even with enough gypsum (I am yet to find calcium hydroxide in my town). What about fine black soil for flowers?

On my third tube which is 3 days in colonization, I plan to do a casing with fine, alkaline ph 7+ soil, perlite for aeration and vermiculite for moisture retaining. Gypsum alone should be enough ph stabilizer if I can't find calcium hydroxide (The one RR uses) in my town. Soil and gypsum will have high enough ph for cube likening and to great disappointment of contam spores  :hehehe: Of course I will pasteurize my mix at ~150 degrees for 60 minutes.

I have plenty of perlite for soil to be fluffy enough to aerate properly. Is there anything that I am wrong with using black soil instead of peat for casing my substrate?

Thought I would share here.. first monotub grow B+.. I am on day 23 from inoculation of 2lbs rye seeds.. it only took 6 days to fully colonize on day 6 I shook the bag and on day 8 I mixed it into 2lbs hpoo sub with a 1/2 casing layer. Day 20 pins showed up. This is the fastest i have ever produced fruits.. was wondering if anyone else has had the same experience.. again this is day 23 of the entire process and this is my tub as of 10 mins ago.. pins are still showing up.. soooo many that havnt popped up yet..just little brown bumps all over the sub.. I am so excited at how my first monotub grow is going... fuck jars..I'll never go back.

I totally agree with this. Stop looking for silly ways to fix it. You need some patience. Set it- forget it. Keep surface conditions in mind but unless drastic, i say do not mist or fan. Leave it be. If you are following Teks from TC's that are up to date you should have absolutely no issues whatsoever. I am fairly new to the growing portion too, (studied microbiology for a while and have self taught plenty of things) but it is quite simple so long as you follow directions to a tee. Dont bother with wax paper and shit. Leave it be. let it ride.

It had a pooling of water on surface, formed naturally. I thought it was best to fan it for 7 minutes. After closing the lid, a tiny bit of mycelium acquired bluish tint. It has recovered after stopping misting the lid/walls & fanning.

Looks delicious:heart: How long did these evolve from little pins like mine? I am trying to get rid of impression that mine are a bit stalled due to unknown human factor from my side:sad:

To be on safer side, today I switched them completely on natural light. I only lit my lamps for about 30 minutes many times per day, and when I want to watch them closely:heart: No mist or fan whatsoever - only FAE trough 12 1" holes moderately filled with polyfill.  average 25.1 celsius during the day & 26.5 during the night. Trying to keep RH always above 50% I even hooked a sterile hose to ultrasonic humidifier and fogged the hell out of my tubes :jah: So I believe RH of tub with pins should be near 80-90% I believe. I may even fan it a little bit (Watching closely that no stray gnat fly into the tube:eek: I have tons of sticky papers & Lents in grow room and even in my first monotub, they are attached on walls, stapled and taped on a wall. Non-sticky side was wiped with 70% alcohol thoroughly:crazy:) if no visible progress will be apparent till tomorrow.

My first monotub is still thriving:cool: Monotub is mildly infested with gnats and mold. If I raise RH there to about 70%, slimy mold will appear and die very quickly, and their black remains are eaten by clearly white mycelium. Currently no more mold has appeared for 5 days already. Gnats are treated besides of sticky papers, with incense spirals. I held burning spiral in a tube carefully for 3-5 minutes. It helps a lot. I do this kind of smoke therapy even if occasional gnat flyby's nearby

What are your temps, RH & lighting? I am suspecting that it may be my a little bit high fruiting temps of 78-80 degrees may be the reason of my stalled fruiting. Otherwise, there are perfect conditions I have, aren't they?

I was planning on finishing my grow before summer, but initial colonization of rye jars from spore syringe took too long because of over-filtered lids with tyvek. Inoculated on 03/14, mixed in monotub only on 05/09.

G2G inoculated jars take 2-3 weeks with polyfill lids for me. I have yet to test my colonization speed with spore syringe and polyfill lids:syringe::stoned:

My tank is running 74° pretty consistently.. I like to colonize at 81° so there is a noticeable temp drop when you go into the fruiting stage. RH should always be above 90% but let the water beads evaporate from your sub before misting.. never to close and never directly at your mushrooms.. I use well water but purified or distilled water works ok too. Keep the FAE to a minimum to hold the c02 down.. pins need to fight to get above it so they can breath... slow constant fae seems to work good for me when trying to get my pinset going.. but this is my first monotub so it's a little trial and error for me too. But conditions arent any different than growing on cakes

You are messing with your tubs way too much and trying to understand more than you can handle as a beginner.

Do not worry about gypsum, get the hygrometer out of your tub, stop throwing wax paper into your tubs trying to take shortcuts.

Im going to tell you as simply as I can, acquire clean spawn, pasteurize coir and verm via bucket tek, mix those contents into your mono-tub, immediately throw bad-boy into fruiting conditions, DO NOT MIST UNTIL AFTER FIRST FLUSH. You are making it way more complicated on you than it should be.

For those like myself, can you provide vital information please:bow2:
My third tube, which is also uncased, (I don't plan to case or disturb it at all for now) is currently in this state of colonization. As you can see, surface is completely covered in what I believe are hyphal knots, if I am identifying them correctly. All my hopes are on this final 3rd tube (although 8 more jars are still ongoing, but it won't continue forever without mushrooms right?)

Do you recognize this level of tube being? It is 9 days after mixing spawn (mostly in layers). Is this healthy mycelium? Temps in AC room are around 80 at maximum.
My lone hope of having fun in this damn hot summer was involved with mushrooms, my dreams are getting far and far away from becoming truth...

The pictures in question (I don't take lid of it):

Take the lid off for pics. Fruiting is not a sterile process. You arent going to do any harm.

We cant help if you give us dog shit quality photos to work with.

I am really sorry about quality :whiteflag: Ok, I will take better pictures when I will be ready to take the lid of for a bit to check if mushrooms are showing up :mushroom2:

Only this sight is available for now:

It is so common for me already:crazy: All previous tubes looked healthy at these stages of life, until I switched them in fruiting conditions. I will not touch this 3rd one for sure! Just to make sure shit stays free of my stupidity :badshroom:

Sorry for bumping my thread:sad:

After this phase, it gets all fluffy covering and should pin vigorously in theory right? But previous two tubs did nothing yet. This is a B+ strain. Can it be too temperature sensitive? Can temps around 80 cause pining failure in some genetics or something? Is this even cubensis or some other thing? It was from syringe for sure - which was labeled properly, and was acquired in trusted online shop. What I am doing wrong:confused:?

It looks healthy to me.. get some airflow going and some 12/12 light also drop your temp to mid 70's.. all three are important
My first flush produced 1.3oz dry weight..
Sampled 4 fruits lastnight and experienced  mild body rushes weightlessness and some light visuals. 2.2 grams... my second flush is pinning right now..
For the experienced.... should I scrape the top layer of casing to remove spores from the first flush and clean the surface?

Dude, you can take the fucking lid off. All my monos are doing great and I have never even checked or paid attention to the temp. I think you should take people's advice and just leave it alone. That picture is also bad, but from that pic, it looks weirdly slimy.

Decided to fan and take photos today. These are current photos of 2nd tube I am waiting pins from. Existing ones are hardly identifiable anymore. What can you say about them and aborted/no pins? There are many fluffy white snow-like formations as you can see. I hope this is how healthy mycelium of cubensis should look like.

Seriously man, I'd kill for getting these (。・ ω<), but faster would be growing mine.
Anyway, my third tube also refuses to pin and I am still out of options, but to post here and beg for help from kind folks)
I am taking proper care of it, fanning everyday, poly loosened, fair FAE is fair.  I pray and live ascetically to make them pin, I do yoga shit etc.

So here are pics, can any one of you Trusted Cultivators identify the problem with my tube? It cannot be too much moisture with shit hell alot of fanning I do with this tube.

Yoga won't save your tub. Toss the contents and start over, it looks wrecked. You also don't need to fan.

The question is what could go wrong? I wasn't fanning 2nd tube and it rotted, 1st tube killed by gnats. What could go wrong with 3rd? Seemed to be in ideal conditions. It could help to identify my flaws. I think I am over-moisturizing and wasn't able to maintain proper field capacity of bulk subs. I also always mixed too little spawn in my opinion. 3rd one has most spawn in it - colonized quickest, had rhizo growth. Then I started opening it for moisture evaporation and FAE purposes, after awhile it got yellowings. Is this white fluffiness getting yellowings mycelium in first place?

What is wrong with fanning? Many of you should be doing it, right?

:facepalm3: No. You should have adequate FAE to not need it. Fanning is outdated info.

It simply looks unhealthy/contamed.  Sounds like you're doing something wrong with the inoculation process since you keep having failed tubs. Just start over and figure out where you're going wrong.

If you spawned these jars from this post: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/25976631

You shouldn't even be the slightest bit surprised things aren't panning out.

These are my first jars:sad: First tube was spawned with these. I did two successful clean G2G from those jars and 2nd generation jars - current tube is from second generation G2G. From these jars: https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26013936 They remained healthy all the way - only last days before spawning, slight "piss" appeared, nothing serious. I made sure to pick healthiest looking myc when doing G2G transfers.

Wait, exactly what is wrong with these jars? They were inoculated with ~1ml of spore suspension which was 2 years old. Ko Samui superstrain.

I am still in learning stage of mycology and I have zero intention of quitting because of tiny misfortune in the beginning of my great work of life. I plan to buy my favorite spores only after being sure in my growing methods. Before this, easily available edible mushrooms will satisfy my learning needs.

I can say without exaggeration - as for human being, successfully growing  mushrooms is meaning of my life:mushroom2:

Which of beginner-friendly strongest strains do you recommend? I am considering Golden Teacher, Penis Envy, Mazatec and couple of other strains.

You gotta work on that grain prep man.
2year old spore syringe,  wet bursted grains and all = for certain bacteria = do not g2g!

Glad you love this hobby! Me too.
All of the varieties you mention are p.cubensis and are all fine for a beginner

Also get into agar asap, if you want to love what you do and not stress about the small stuff. It's all small stuff in micro biology.

PS: everyone here is in the learning stage if they are being honest! If you have the passion you just can't stop. Lol:goodluck:

Make sure to read through a lot of the teks on here, theyll help you through the whole process. I agree though, wet grains, and all that moisture is prone to get some bacteria riding along. looks like your jars are a little odd to me? Is that paper towel under the lids? Its hard to tell, if it is dont use paper towel. Mycology definitely grows as a passion for a lot of us here, myself included i never thought id love this so much. Its pretty much taken over all my spare time at this point.
Started small with a couple monotubs in my spare bedroom.

And nowadays its a bit bigger...taking over an entire room.

Patience, persistence, and an open mind is all you need to succeed!

It is tyvek. I overused it, effectively reducing GE. It has overall 4 layers of tyvek - two siliconed on lid and two between jars and lid. I also overestimated polyfill gas exchange capabilities - my last G2G jars got rotten:sad:

these are unmodified tubs right? How do you provide FAE?

Flip the lids, but normally just leaving it unlatched works its not a perfect seal so provides enough fae. I mod my tubs bigger than 32qt, just out of personal preference, i tend to dry the substrate out if i dont.  🤷‍♂️ #neglect-tek

I will do many experiments with my edible mushroom tubs. I already bought some mushrooms to make clones on agar for further agar work exercise. I have only one problem with agar: Last time everything went well, except bottle with agar was not really suited for it's purpose and when I was pouring it in petri dishes, despite being extremely careful, I was still spilling it like crazy son of a bitch:eek:

I was wiping everything with alcohol in my SAB and pouring it on inoculated dishes in attempt to remove spilled agar from them. Despite everything, my first agar work has failed with only one surviving dish of questionable healthiness, which is resting in zip-locker bag in a plastic container in my fridge.

I was inoculating with grains from 2nd G2G inoculated fully colonized jar.

Failures away, which bottle can you recommend for pouring agar without spilling a drop?
