"Rustic". I like it lol. But for real. You guys use a loop? I'm afraid to put a tool in the jar. I'd rather waste 8$ worth of grain then a quart of clean culture. But most of all I want to do it the right way so I get tubs of mush consistently.

It's a lot of LC. Lol. I love me some oats just still have like 100# of bird seed so I have been mixing them in 50/50.

Figure I can get like 20+ bags out of this.

Flame sterilize a loop and dip it in the culture. Then streak a plate. Obviously in the flow or sab. It's not hard at all once you get comfortable with sterile tek. Just be sure that the only thing that goes in or over your open liquid has been flamed.

Word. I'll give it a shot on this RW LC I got going. It looks the same as this one ecept there is a small colony that is floating on top of the liquid. I assume that means it's fucked but still want to see what's growing in there and practice the motions. I rekon I'm going to get a stir plate. I can see where that would speed things up and make it easier to pour. This really is the greatest hobby in the world. It's 3am. I have been doing mush stuff from the moment I woke up at 8am. And it's all I can/want to be thinking about. So happy the lockout is over!

I am having trouble finding a good jar for LC that will be nice to pour from. Do you think a glass ketchup bottle would be fine in the pc?

captain morgan, tito's and crown royal handles all work well. Good ol mason jars aren't that bad either.
It is said sometimes that a colony floating means your lc is fubared but i have seen evidence that suggests otherwise.

Mason jars with a regular grain lid and a stir bar works perfectly.

Having a smaller opening would be preferable, but the mason setup is super convenient for obvious reasons in every other way. Might try my old erlenmeyer flask next time, I have the foam plugs for the opening.

I've been using them in my media bottles for agar, prevents boil over and acts as a filter.

about a week or two. depends. the poke takes slightly longer because you are starting with tiny fragments opposed to a wedge.

i thought he was talking about a colony that is literally growing on the surface of the liquid. From my observation, floating vs sinking can be caused by a few things. Namely, contams in the liquid/ culture or amount of oxygen in the liquid/ culture.
cultures that are at the bottom often times become floaters after a god swirling. I attribute this to oxygenation of the culture. I may be wrong but it's the most logical conclusion. I've also been out of town and left a living liquid culture setting for a week. It started growing all sorts of shit on the surface of the liquid. I wish i had pics but i don't. I shook her up really well and tested her on agar. She tested clean.

Ah I misread. Yah I agree with you. Colonies on the surface usually are bad.
