a timer is best. I do 3-4 20 second stirs a day(cycle timer)  if you leave it on all the time you can kill the myc.

source? I heard others leave it in the low setting all the time.

It won't kill anything. Back when I used stirrers I used to keep them on low 24/7 no issues.

maybe my speed was too high.  I use a homemade plate, but Ive had it happen a few times so I stopped

You sure the lc wasnt contaminated?

I have one big stir bar that makes a good vortex and I have a bunch of tictac size ones that only keep it circulating but no vortex. I'm using the tictac ones for an hour or so when I get home. The little ones don't seem to make enough current to suck the agar wedge into the middle and chop it up. I've got good colonies forming in my beer lc.

yup,  it was right when I made the stir-plates. I had all different sized bars in my lc jars and some wouldn't spin so they got shaken every so often.  the lc's were all already partially colonized and looking healthy and the 3 that got stirred all seemed to have just died. tested 1 jar on plates and nothing ever grew. since I put them on timers with success. only reason I chimed in.  that was the only thing I can think to attribute it to

I'd point the finger at contamination. Myc 'dying/stalling' due to being stirred doesnt make sense.

Do you test LC?

yes.  that's what I was saying was that nothing grew when tested. I don't own a microscope tho.  maybe I'll try it out again... full throttle stirring that is.

With a stirplate, do you leave it on a low setting all the time or high speed blend once a day? I don't have one yet, but i want to be prepared if/when i get one.

With the stir plates I have there is a certain level you have to turn it to just to get the bar spinning.
But once it is, you can turn it back down so it's barely moving. This is where I keep it 24/7 unless I start to get bigger
chunks of mycelium growing on the surface (rare but it happens). Then a day or so before I use it, I might let it sit.

This is the second time I use the stir plate.

The first time nothing grew. This time it’s growing like this.

I also have another jar that I knocked up with a wedge from the same plate that is not stirring (except by hand) and looking better.

ah, mine creates a  'mega' vortex.  I might need to play with the speed a bit.  I hooked the power supply to a fan speed controller but may experiment with soldering on this potentiometer I got.  or just buy one of those... I like the color

Still having issues with my stir plate culture. There is a piece in there that looks like a tic tac.

Also, I have the setting pretty low and the culture keeps sticking to the magnet. Anyone else have this problem?

I've been leaving mine alone and then stirring them for a half hour at night when I come home. My culture grew fast. Already have it on grains and I see germination all over. I'm wondering how fast do most lc take to start colonizing on grain, 4 days? I decided to try a couple of these No tilt lc jars and so far I really like them. I use leurlock syringes so when I connect one to the jar I can draw and squirt lc without fear of the needle popping off.

This is x7x cube lc. I also have pan cyan ( tamarindtree British Virgin islands) lc that I started a couple days ago.

So what is the secret of making clear LC?

Low nutes? types of nutes? Mixing the ingredients in cold vs hot water? a combination of all? what is the secret?

I'm really considering pouring LC from media bottles to sterilized grain quart jars for pan cyans, instead of using syringes. I'm just afraid of pouring too much... how much you guys pour to quart jars? @mushboy probably knows this.

I love pouring from media bottles. I've not played with syringes since I put spores on agar. I would just pour a little splash. Be sure to swilr the solution before each pour. It doesn't take much.
