At pressure agar is a liquid. It has no R value. However any solids that may be present in the media will have some R value and depending on elevation the boiling point of said liquid is going to be lower. I’m not going to say it can’t work for some people, I just know what happen to me when I did it. Same thing with violets microwave agar tek. I’m sure it worked fine for her but for me it all went bacterial.
I have to say I also don’t really buy into the fear of Caramelization. While there are certainly some extremes that won’t be positive in outcome, an extra 10-20 min isn’t going to be the end of things. I have PCd no pour agar for 60 min before with no issues. I would rather throw on a little extra time today than risk it all going bad tomorrow.

It’s actually an old inside joke among the old hands. They would get sloppy with something and say they caramelized it.

Does anyone have pictures of carmelized LC/agar? I've routinely run 45 min cycles for years and always have clear plates. I'd like to see what it looks like.
I thought that my poor choice in malt from my previous post may have produced caramelization, however it was just undesolved particulate.

I’m sure if you ran agar for 2 hours it could pose an issue. But even then I doubt it would be anything other than sugar shocking the culture a bit. Certainly not a contam vector or kill the culture.

I PC'd agar and lc at about 25 psi for 30 minutes one time Never caramelized at all, not sure what it would take, I would guess and say hours as it is not on a direct heat source.
Note: propane tanks for gas stoves anywhere below -30 celsius are not to be trusted, watch your flame boys and girls.

I will be upgrading to an electric 75x soon. Proving to be difficult to get one shipped to Canada though.

I've done tons of LC at 18 psi for 45 minutes. Never seen a problem with "caramelization". a quick google search told me...
"Sugar (sucrose) begins to melt around 320° F and caramelize around 340° F." although a little further reading reveals that the PH of the media will directly affect the temperature at which it occurs.
I used to always run LC and Agar for 45 minutes but nowadays I do about 30.

I got high hopes for this PE6 LC. Shook the shit out of it yesterday instead of swirling so as to disperse the colony off the agar wedge. Gonna leave it alone till Monday.

Sugars like malt caramelizes around 300f so it's kinda hard to do in a pc without longer cycles than necessary and added weight.

Alright fellas (and ladies). I started a thread to document my little test and any future LC tests i decide to run. It's right here, if you're interested
Mushboy, If you don't like the way i worded the part about you, just let me know and I'll change it.

So being a first timer at LC I have to ask the newb question "how does this look". I just want to know if its ready yet. Made 2 weeks ago.

Looks good. But test on a plate to be sure. There is no way anyone can tell you if that is good just by looking at it. So just be the safest you can be.
