Does this grain jar growth look healthy?
    #26018623 -

From MS, about five weeks old, took three weeks to show growth. Thinking about giving it a shake, should I?

Based on the side image... I'm kinda not sure how it's looking. There seems to be two kinds of mycelium. One (the one you towards the bottom) seems to be the right kind of mycelium, so it makes me nervous seeing the other kind w/o so much rhyzo growth traits. So I don't feel confident being able to recommend that it's good.

What's going on with that upper patch? Looks like it could just be mold? Hard to say from this angle. Also use the image uploader here for more answers (it's the thing that looks like a landscape right above this box, two to the left of the smily face).

I've edited the OP with an image of the smaller patch.

I think it appeared a bit after the bottom one. And it's been growing at a much slower pace.

Huh, interesting. It looks better with a head-on picture, but it's still different. Possibly just a different myc that formed and is more tomentose than rhizo, but still cube myc. I don't know, still makes me a little nervous. Hopefully someone else will come and tell you it's safe to shake.

Looks fine, give it a shake.

It's fine.

And yes, you can go ahead and shake it up.  Just use your palm...  Slap the jar against your palm until everything starts to break up.  Then shake it up to distribute everything.  This will greatly speed up colonizing times.

As a general rule of thumb, once about 30-40% of the outside surface of the jar is colonized, go ahead and shake it up.
