Slow growth
    #26017913 - 05/28/19 11:47 AM (1 year, 9 months ago)

I inoculated on May 4th, it is May 28th. I purchased my jars from a pretty popular website and followed their instructions. There is no layer of vermiculite in the jar so I have kept the foil on top of them (puffed up so they get some air flow).I have been keeping my jars between 75 and 81 degrees and fanning the tub every day. Half of my jars are at about 30-40% and the other half aren't showing too many signs of growth yet. Does anybody have any ideas why some are growing and some are not and why the ones that are growing are growing so slow ? The website said it should take 3-5 weeks, i'm almost at 4 weeks. I appreciate you guys, thanks for the help !

Pictures?

Could be the way the holes are lack of air, Could be bacterial
What tub are you fanning if they are still in jars?
No way to really tell without some pics of your jars.

post the pics in this thread if you want us to see them. There is too little info here for me to know what's up but sounds like spores to grain. Spores will germinate at different rates. If you truly have holes with no filter you are almost certainly doomed. Do not fan as the only protection you have is your foil tent and it is only going to work in the absence of air currents. Also, colonizing jars do not need air exchange so fanning isn't helping anyways. They need to exchange gas but that's on a very minute level when compared to fresh air exchange.

There to hot the tub says it is at 79F add 5F for the temp inside the jar you are at 84F. Take them out of that tub and set them on a shelf in your house. Or adjust the tub down to 72F. The tub will reduce air exchange though. Remove the foil there is vermiculite on top of the jar I am sure. Look at the top of the lid in the pic that is vermiculite where did that come from?

Every time I had contamn issues when I used a dry verm layer on top of PF tek jars, it was at the line where the wet and dry meet, so the dry verm was likely the prob in my case, so I stopped using it and started putting a sheet of tyvek under the lid instead...then I inject through it and just put micropore tape over the holes after...foil always caused issues for me if I left it on...over heating can dry them out too, cause condensation to for on the foil which can grow bacteria...and so one...so the foil definitely has to go...

I had lots of mold issues since I am a mold remediator by trade, I bring shit at times...plus it only takes one moldy sub in your FC to spore up your airspace.

There are many variables which is why it is best to be as precise and thorough as possible when measuring & mixing...both being too wet and too dry can lead to slow colonization...or even stalling.

Inoculate those jars that have no signs of growth again. Does the sub still look moist because you may have dried it out at those temps.

still seems pretty moist. I think possibly a couple of them i didn't quite squirt the spore on the glass and did it more in the middle. If no growth in a week or so I'll order some more spores and give them another shot.

I always go down the middle of anything I am inoculating. Because it will colonize in 360 degrees and not only be able to grow away from the glass. Yes, you will see contamination quicker but if it contaminates there is no saving it anyway. I prefer faster colonization by going down the middle.

okay, good to know. This is my first go at it and honestly I didn't do enough research. I'll be happy with whatever I get out of this batch. I still have more research to do but next time I think I will go grain bags and do it with bulk substrate in a shotgun fruiting chamber. Still need to do more research but from what I've gathered that it's a lot better than pftek. Thanks for all your help brother ! I will keep everyone updated with pictures.

A shotgun chamber is for cakes like you have not for bulk. I would definitely say do bulk next time. I would use a mono-tub it will give you the best results with less work. But do yourself a favor and don't listen to the unmodified mono-tub people. It takes away the whole purpose of a mono-tub and it is just lazy. When you are ready PM me I will walk you through it the 1st time and then you will not have a problem. Well, you might have a problem "what am I going to do with all these mushrooms" but I think you will agree on that's a good problem to have.

Yes, keep us updated, please.

I know exactly where you got those jars. Their supplies are bullshit, overpriced and bound to fail. Before I knew what I was doing, I inoculated some jars from them. Far slower than the jars I made myself. Make your own BRF jars and say goodbye to MWGK forever - they're fucks.

I can assure you that you would have fully colonized jars by now if you had made your own wide mouth jars. I highly recommend you make some ASAP - they'll be ready in no time.

Also, if you see no growth after a month, you can pretty much guarantee the jar failed to germinate. Keep them if you want, but I would suggest emptying them and reusing the jar with your own substrate inside.

don't let these guys scare you. i know where you got those jars too, same place i always get mine. I have a 100 percent success rate having used close to a hundred jars now. far from the 100% failure rate people try to insist you'll have. i always run into contamination issues trying to do bulk grows. you just have to be really careful and follow all instructions. As far as being overpriced, if you can make back 100 times what you paid then the price isn't really an issue. plus you save yourself boatloads or work and having to own extra equipment.
