Thin looking colonization questions.
    #26016881 -

Inoculation: 4 and a half weeks ago via MS. 1/4" hole with sfd.
Temps: Fluctuating between 75(night)-80(day)
Location: Low to the ground in a room with fan usually running.

Was shaken at about 2 and a half weeks in at 20%-25% colonization. Rapid growth took place for the next after the initial 2 day stall. Came to steady halt 3 and a half weeks in. Condensation began to set in.

It along with a few other jars seem to have consistently colonized the entire exterior however it seems quite thin. I can still see many of the yellow colored grains from the wbs without too much mycelium on it.

If it helps any this is the PE strain. I know it is considered to grow a little bit differently from the other cubensis strains in the colonization and fruiting stages. Definitely not as rhizomorphic as I have seen other strains especially in pf tek. My only concern is that is not really "Ready" to birth. Should I give it one more week for consolidation.

What are my options here as far as birthing goes? What do you guys think? I receive comfort from the idea that this and the other jars have all matured at about the same rate and look very similar. Thus, I only posted a picture of one. I can't really smell much of anything through the sfd hole. Seems fine. How much longer would you keep it bottled up?

It shouldn't halt like that. I'd say it's almost certainly got some other things in the mix keeping it from nice healthy colonization. I'd shake her up real good and watch how she recovers over the next two or three days. The test shake is a very helpful way to make nasties show their face.

PE pins and fruits in a unique way but all other aspects of the grow should be the same as non mutant cubes.

Okay, wtf! I'm really dumbfounded here. I shook the jar and it literally looks like the mycelium has dissapeared. I see traces of white on bits and pieces of the grain. Maybe a few clumps that wont break up. Does this mean that it was cobwebs rather than mycelium? Or is that normal. Is that what is meant by watching how it recovers?

I fear shaking another one of the jars to see the same thing happen.

I had a pretty similar situation with this jar. As you can see I inoculated this well over a month ago and it's not really doing anything anymore. There were actually more bare grains last time I checked but I have plenty of clean spawn so this is going to an outdoor bed once the weather warms. I never asked but I'm almost positive its bacterial as theres no visible mold growth and it stalled 2 weeks after inoc.
I have seen people spawn bacterial jars and get a flush or two but I suppose it wouldn't be right to suggest you spawn that.

Haha yeah dude that's normal. Mycelium for the most part goes invisible when you shake. If its healthy it should recover in 24-48 hours

Thanks. That really threw me for a loop for a second. Still contemplating trying to shake my other jars. They are all pretty much copies of each other as far as colonization % goes. Maybe I'll go half and half. The other idea was to birth a 1/3, shake a 1/3, and leave a 1/3.

Maybe experimenting is not the best Idea. I forgot which users sig I read but some pretty active user had "dont experiment with your first grows. See them out to the end and make adjustment accordingly on the next go around". Or something to that effect.

Oh this is your first grow? Yeah that is actually really solid advice. If you follow a trusted tek all the way you're pretty much going to succeed more or less. Spores to grain is usually going to end up in contamination sooner or later though. Maybe mess around with some agar in the meantime while you're waiting for this project to wrap up?

MS to grain is a bad idea in general.

After shaking if there's no recovery in about 24 hrs, then Id say that theres a good chance of bacteria.

I completely concur. I've seen healthy mycelium take a little longer to recover in cooler temps though.
But in general that seems to be the consensus

Well, Its been about 60 hours since the shake and I see some bounce back but not anywhere near what it was before the shake. Is it 24-48 hours to begin seeing growth or 24-48 for full recovery?

I noticed there was a small clump of seed that really was very hard to break up. Im guessing that's the bacteria? Fuck, this is discouraging. Should I shake the other jars that were in similar condition to the one shaken and see how those come out after a couple days?

I'm not sure I want to go to agar. It's very intimidating to me. Upgrading to that makes me feel like I'm going from a hobby to a full on home lab.

I don't know what is worse. Feeling defeated by all the time and patience I put in. Or sacking up putting in even more time because I don't want to feel like a failure. :frown:

Being a quitter is always the worst option. That's my opinion anyway. Quitters never win.... You know. You got it man. Agar is easy.

Yes, you should shake then all if you want to be safe. Or you can throw a casing of sorts on top and almost certainly get some fruits right out of the jar.

The chunk was possibly hard to break up because of bacteria but it's more likely that your grain was just over hydrated and that's just a good ol nugget. Meanwhile, there is probably bacteria all over the show.

People say 24 to 48 hours for it to return at least to the state it was in pre shake. I don't like to make hard rules about it because there are all manners of cleanish spawn and all manners of grains, hydration levels, temperatures.... If it's been 60 hours and it doesn't look like it's recovered then you certainly have troubles.

Thin looking mycelium like that on grains is just a very good indicator of healthy clean growth.  When it gets thick and opaque is when it's battling bacteria. The thin growth just means it is unimpeded and spreading fast. Here are some more examples of really clean spawn so you can see:

The more you know! Good job on clean spawn y'all!

OP: I'm going to say yours looks fine too. If anything you've maybe got minor bacteria, as that tends to happen when inoculating with MS syringes. I'd spawn that jar.

Also, colonized grains can't get more colonized, so sometimes shaking them late in the game looks weirder because there's not much going on to recover. I find that my shakes that happen when over 75% colonized tend to look weirder than when I do shakes at like 20%-30%. My assumption has to do with mycelium not really needing to go anywhere else when all it's touching is colonized grain.

Those clumps that are hard to break up are likely tightly bound mycelium. If anything the bacteria is where the grains look wet pressed against the jar sides.

Boxcar_shorty, your example picture from the bottom is super bacterial. Those wet spots are an easy indication of such.

I ended up shaking them all before reading the replies. I did mild shakes intermittently as to inspect the jar for all its inner goodies. Most of the jars had those white clumps. Very small though. Maybe the size of an average NON-mongoloid GMO grape. Other than that, as a nooby I'd have to say it looked pretty healthy. No strange smells either. Could I still do that spawn within the next couple of days or should I just wait for a decent amount of recolonization before doing that(2-5 days)?

The plan was 6 quart dub tubs with 50/50 coir. Any chance the multiple shakes will affect first flush size. Other than the fact PE tend to have weak first flushes or blobs from what I hear. I just dont wanna assume a normal flush is in order and then give up when there is a chance for redemption upon 2nd flush.

Like I said, I'd spawn that jar. Since it's got a bottle neck top you'd have to shake the grains anyways to loosen them up to pour out. You're good to go pardner!

One last couple question. I've been searching around and maybe its such a an insignificant or obvious detail/answer that its not even talked about.

I'm just about to mix in my field capacity coir into 6q tubs and I'm not sure if what im seeing in the guide I was originally following is necessary or not.
I was using a guide on shroomology and it says to cover the container with foil with holes poked in it with spore tape on said holes. Ummmm cant I just secure the lid on top lol? It seems from pictures of other grows that that's all people are doing. Upside down lid maybe, or is that gonna let too much C02 escape. Lastly what about lighting conditions? Dark room is just fine?

Thanks to all who contributed to this post and the hopeful success of my first grain attempt. Love you shroomery community!

The lid will do just fine. Light is always fine but they will colonize in a dark room.

Here's my tek for spawning to coir in shoeboxes (same for unmodded monotubs). It should answer your questions.

I ended up mixing my coir and spawn before reporting back. Those are some mighty helpful tips you got there in that tek. Will be sure to implement them next time around. I see you go straight to fruiting temps. I’d seen bod mentioned doing the same.

I had set the tubs to be at 78 oringinally, however after buying a digital temperature reader today found out that my thermostat is not very accurate in reading temperature in the room I have the tubs in. It ended up being 84 in the room which means the inside of the tub could potentially be above 90. Yikes!!!. It was only like that for 24 hours. I’ve since moved it to a room that has a reading of 78. Seems the high temp gave it a speedy start as there is much mycelium in the tubs for only 1 day. Again no odd smell as of yet. Would you recommend I just go ahead and go straight down to low 70’s and do 12/12 lighting given the situation?

78 is higher than I go. There is no need to keep temps in one range for colonizing and another for fruiting. Many of us don't do anything different between the two "phases".  I just spawn them at the poly a little tighter on the top holes and let them colonize in my 75ish degree room. I loosen the poly on the top wholes once the sub is colonized.

I like 72 but sometimes the teenage daughters of mine turn it to 68. I've never noticed much difference in growth between 68-80 and I tried a lot of temps. They colonize fast at room temp and fruit even faster. They're the one kind you can grow and not adjust temps for, take advantage.
