Insects - Oyster mushrooms
    #25954335 - 04/25/19 09:11 AM (4 years, 10 months ago)

My first batch of oysters growing on saw dust and coffee grounds have been fruited and are starting to grow. I've noticed small black flying insects in the box. I have random small things flying around due to the plants in the house. Any idea what these are and if I should be worried?

yes they are definitely worrying .. depending upon their numbers..
they are mushroom flies. i suspect the temperature at your place is getting on the higher side.
these flies tends to lay eggs inside the mushroom or the bed in huge numbers. and then they feed upon the mycelium and feel cozy in the warm and humid bed and thus stay there forever.
the eggs when turned into larva they become more harmful and will dig tunnels inside the mushroom fruiting bodies and will reach the destination (where the cap and stype meets) there they stay till they complete the cycle of becoming a fly again. meanwhile whole corp is spoiled. :frown:

precaution is better than cure in mushroom farming. so hygiene is of utmost importance. you can place sticky sheets to capture them thus avoiding further spread.
harvest your mushrooms before the cap flattens (in oysters) a it is the time when spore release is at the peak and what attract the Beatles and they too are unforgiving. they straightaway eat the fruit and hide inside the caps by digging holes downward.

I give my friends' kids a cookie for every lizard they put in my fruiting house

I spray with permethrin every time I see fruit flies or gnats. No adverse effect and its non toxic to mammals and birds.

I got some fine mesh and covered the boxes. Then I sprayed withe some insecticide I already had... wish slowed them down but didn't get rid of them all. I got some permetrin today so that should do the trick. The next option is neem oil.
The other box is uninfested, and covered with mesh too so that should be safe.

Permethrin worked by the way. Had to spray a couple of times.
