Re: How do you deal with dangerous wild animals? [Re: HeadbandOG] * 2

Biggest problem is spooking wild animals, especially bears. When hiking, especially solo, I put a small bell on my back pack, to alert the bigger animals a human is approaching. I live in the Rockies, major bear territory. If the animals  notice that your approaching, they'll do everything to avoid you. If you startle them from 20 feet away, that's when problems can occur. I also carry bear spray, which is good for all large animals. Thing with bear spray, it shoots far, farther then street pepper spray. When camping, especially back country, clean up camp before bed. Absolutely no food in your tent, not even tooth paste. When I was hiking in Alaska, I even changed clothes I cooked dinner in, before I went to bed. Just that scent would attract a 700lb grizzly. Stash food 75-100 yards away from site, in a tree preferably.  Don't give the midnight wonderers an excuse to enter your camp area.

^^^ Very good information about being bear smart. I go camping with a guy every October in North Georgia. He leaves cooked food out for days and discards old food next to the campsite. It’s almost as if he is trying to attract bears and give himself food poisoning. He’s been doing this for decades and never had a problem. I guess what saves him is that there usually is several people, dogs, and his two llamas in the campsite. When I’m by myself, I do what the above poster says.
