Thanks for the quick response Way, will do.
Another thing I'm not sure about is some of the myc looks like it's reaching upwards off the substrate. Is that OK?

Is it ok to open the lid like this for pictures a lot of people told me not to open the lid but you seem to have no problems by doing it 🤔

Nothing wrong with taking the lid off for a pic, just remember to put it back on when you are done.

I've read that, in order to get bulkier fruits, one should allow a lot of FAE after the pins comes out and, of course, get restricted FAE before pins.
Have someone tried this? Like unlatch the lid and also fan the substrate one or twice per day? If so, there was any difference with the set-and-forget restricted FAE method?

No need for fanning, the small surface would dry out fast. Shoeboxes are meant for set and forget. A little gap goes a long way, in addition to that everybody needs to dial in to his environment. You can push humidity and airflow up by placing them multiple in a big monotub, but direct fanning isn´t welcome for cubensis.

Thanks for the reply! Last thing: IF the top layer of the substrate dries out, would you mist on the surface? I've read about people that say to avoid it and people that say it's OK to mist directly on it.

The surface should never dry out, but if so, you have to mist for sure. I don´t know who told to avoid it. You should avoid misting direct and heavily, so it would hurt and stress the mycelium network. Always smoothly from high above with a fine mister, like the ones for hair works f.e. Surface moisture is extreme important for pinning, after pins moved in, it can be cut down a bit, but again the surface should never dry out.

I've been using this TEK for my first few grows. I've been using ~110g of Coir per 6qt shoebox 1:1.5 including the pint top layer. You can always hydrate more than that at first to make sure.

Hey folks, I've been I'm following the shoebox SFF TEK and I've gotten one flush that turned out pretty well (320 g wet). There were some small pins that I left because they were not harvestable.
I tried to rehydrate per TEK by immersing coir block in water for 3 hours and then draining.
What I've noticed is that there is a short, dense hair covering the substrate and I don't have the "sexy" surface condition moisture that I originally had. The primoridia look a little dried out. The hairs started white, then turned grey-ish and they covered most of the pins on the surface. Those pins stunted and stopped growing.
Today though I harvested 80 grams of wet, good, healthy pins that came up over the course of a week and a half.
Could anyone tell me what I did wrong and how to prevent the grey fuzz? It seems some folks say one should heavy-mist after first flush instead of immersing in water.

Thats fuzzy layer covering sub is Just mycelium growing . But i think i see some green in the first pic on the right. If so toss it
next time U can mist untill the surface is moist instead of dunking if u want.

Some people go as high as 1:7, but it can stall out, so you probably shouldn't go higher than 1:3.
After a couple of mine with lots of coir stalled out, I went back down to 1:1.5
I didn't measure with those, so I don't know how high it was exactly.
I haven't done nats yet, so I can't advise. My nats are still on agar.

It's been said before but wow this is just a fantastic writeup. I've got some agar going right now and plan to do this TEK soon. Amazing job!

How do we know if things are too wet in there?
That's one thing I'm worried about.

Oh, and I'm also asking this because my coir wasn't "under" field capacity on the first few boxes I made. I forgot to mention this, and unfortunately I had already sprayed by the time I caught this mistake.
Should I unlatch or something to play it safe?

I am still very new to growing mushrooms, I haven't actually produced one yet.
I have 5 PF Tek cakes in a sgfc but they haven't done anything yet.
I started 7 shoe boxes using this tek 3 days ago and I'm really surprised with the amount mycelium that has grown since then. I really appreciate ShaperDreaming and others that have posted useful/helpful information.
I wonder what happened to ShaperDreaming? Looks like she hasn't posted in several years. Thanks for starting this in any case!
