Hey CorteX, I'm about 6 weeks behind you with natalensis (just got a MSS in the mail).
How did this go for you? Anything you'd do differently?

Hi folks!
I have bought some small boxes (1.7l) and they are pretty good vented.Maybe too good. Would you tape the holes with Micropore or just let them as they are?

I'd tape them with packing tape. Seal them completely. Should get all the FAE you need from the gaps between the lid and the tub, and some lid designs have little stand-offs that result in too much FAE, so you definitely don't want the holes that come in the tubs in your photo.

Does anybody have experience with using the IKEA Samla 5L for this tek?

I don't have access to the recommended one so am looking for a suitable alternative that can work with the lid closed.

I have used Sterlite, Hefty, and Dollar Store brand shoeboxes just make sure the lids don't seal to well. If your not sure put an inch or two of water in the tub put the lid on and see if the water will just pour out when turned upside down. You don't want a great seal but you want enough to maintain the environment in the box if you can't get the recommended boxes keep and eye on the condensation you may have to unlatch the lid or if it vents to well mist.
Edit: I actually found the Hefty ones work great and they are a little taller then the recommended ones so they are even better IMO.

I love the simplicity of this. Thanks for laying it all out. I have a noob question, though. Could one do this with BRF cakes instead of grain effectively enough?

I think if you took the BRF cakes and grated them/broke them up, you'd be able to spawn them to bulk and get the same fruit as per normal spawn

I didn't like the way the cakes were going as cakes in the tub so I took 4 of the last 5, grated them and spawned them to coir at 1:2 in a SB tonight so we will see soon. I figured doing 2 different things might increase odds of one working well. I have 4 more that I think I will do 2 and 2 the same way in mini tubs. Meanwhile waiting on some grain jars noc'd with agar to come around to do more SBs.

Grating cakes and mixing them into coir works just fine. The only down side is that cakes handle bacterial contamination pretty well and if you mix them into coir you may lose that benefit. But a lot of people do it and have good success. Grain is better and faster than grates cakes though.

Depending on surface conditions/your casing the primordia may form just under the surface. you may not see them until they become pins and break through the surface.
Although by the photo it looks like primordia have formed on the surface?

I'm assuming the worst for my current grow. 35 days since taking the spawn out of the grain jars and mixing with the coir. Followed this tek pretty much exactly: same spawn:coir ratios, same shoeboxes, been leaving the lids mostly locked. Might have sprayed a little too much water though, as there has been pooling on the sides that i have been pipetting off. They are getting 6500k light for 6-12 hours a day.
So, 35 days in and no pins, no real primordia, nothing. This happened with my last two attempts (old post here, but I was doing a large monotub with the lid flipped up, and assumed that I had let them dry out too much.
Now I'm thinking this is a problem with the genetics? It looks to me like mycelium, and the spore print was sent to me by someone on here who called it cubensis.
I've looked up and down this forum for others who have gone this long without pinning and have only found those whining about 2-3 weeks:) Is 35 days the new record? And yes, I am seeing yellow areas (metabolites) as shown in photos below. What would you do in my position? I have 7 shoeboxes, so I can experiment a bit. Thanks!!

If you're seeing metabolites then your substrate is contaminated with at least bacteria. The source seems to be your spawn; you can tell by how thick and creamy the myc looks in the spawn. Where you went wrong with the process IMO may be either your agar culture or your grain prep methods. If you suspect your agar culture, then making a transfer to water agar and then back to a nutritional plate may solve your issues. But I would review how you prep your grain as well. This is assuming you aren't introducing contaminants with your sterile technique during jar inoculation. Hope some of this helps but I am fairly new at this.

Hi guys. I'm new to mycology and the forum but this TEK looks a good place for me to start.
I'm a little confused though as alot of information I read talks about the importance of FAE especially during fruiting. This TEK though just has the lid on the whole time.
Am I missing something? 🙏🏼

Hi and welcome. No you aren't missing anything. This is a great tek and as long and your shoebox lid doesn't have a gasket it will get plenty of FAE
