Been running this tek for a couple of months now and it's been great for me! As for people asking about fans, I did run into issues if I had my ceiling fan running - totally dried out the sub and made it start to stress, although it completely recovered and even put out more flushes after I corrected and turned off the ceiling fan!

I set mine outside the house, no direct sunlight and my sub seem to have dried out.
Its just so damn arid where I live, how can I augment this situation?

Hi, when measuring our the coir to use with your spawn. Do you measure the coir before or after it's been hydrated?
I have 3 200ml pf tek jars that I wanna spawn to bulk. 600ml total of spawn not sure in grams.
So do I want to weigh the spawn to get the grade and mix it with the same amount of hydrated coir? Or do I need to do it by volume? So 1 cup of spawn to 1-2 cups or hydrated coir?
Or do I need to get the same weight/volume in dry coir, then use all of that once hydrated?
Thank you

Most people (including myself) measure spawn to substrate ratio by volume not weight. It is not important that it be exact - not nearly the same as measuring water to coir where you want to do it by weight.

I assume you mean the volume once the coir has been fully rehydrated?
Thank you.

That is correct. So the best thing to do is to know what weight of dry coir hydrates out to in terms of volume. It can vary from one brand to another, but for me, I find the following works: 4.6g (or ml - same thing) of water per 1g of coir 64g of dry coir hydrates to 1 quart of hydrated coir

Yeah don’t get hung up on measuring. People use a huge range of ratios and it all works.
Personally I just make a bunch of coir and then use enough to fill the tub where I want it.

I'm on day 12 of my first grow. Seems to be going well. For each tub I used 1 quart of brown rice spawn mixed with 1 quart of coir, then topped it with an extra half quart of coir and misted the top as per the tek. I unlatched the lids today to get a bit extra FAE. Should start getting pins soon I hope.
Picture is thru the side of the tub.

Those micro-beads of water on the surface are perfect. Nice job, especially for your first time

Thanks! I am stoked about it. I have 6 shoeboxes and they all look like that.

My first time producing any significant quantity, these are B+. Thanks for the outstanding write-up, ShaperDreaming. I've got a bunch more boxes going, but they're penis envy, and I should probably call them experimental. Three are blobbing already, just beginning to create blobs, and the ones which haven't begun to pin yet I'm going to case tomorrow morning. Be interesting to see what happens with them.

Finally got a few ready to be picked on my first grow. I have 6 shoeboxes but this one was way faster than the other boxes. I think I'll clone one as these are from spores.

Nice looks good.
Try making the coir a tiny bit wetter next time and I think you’ll have a packed tub.

Hmm interesting. I actually thought they were too wet. I have had the lids open a crack and fanning them a bit the week or so to try and get some moisture to evaporate. Maybe I did too much.

any fanning at all is too much, definitely never fan monos. only mist if really necessary. You want moisture on the surface constantly, it'll always be evaporating and replenishing itself from the sub at about the same rate in a well dialed tub

That makes sense. I thought the droplets on the surface were supposed to go away once you start seeing pins. Thanks for the tip.

Just curious...has anyone tried putting a layer of pearlite in the bottom of the box before adding the coir? I was wondering if this would help to retain moisture and minimize the need for dunking. I grow in a dry environment and thought that adding pearlite would help to maintain humidity. I'm thinking of trying my hand at PE and understand that they consume more water than typical cubes during the growth process.
