Hello,
I’ve got some brf jars which are at about 75% colonisation. Now after this week I’m going to be away for 2 weeks. Is this colonisation percentage to low if I were to add them to the shoeboxes this week? Or do I wait the 2.5 weeks for full colonisation and box them up once I’m back home?
Cheers

Leave them alone until you are back. It wont hurt it one bit. Vs risking exposing the uncovered grains to contaminates.
Be safe on your trip your jars are counting on your return
Edit: didnt see brf sorry... someone else should weigh in I've never worked with brf.

I got 6 jars that are roughly 80% colonized at a little under 5 weeks. Do you think that I can use this TEK or do I have to wait for 100% colonization before spawning?

5 weeks? What's in the jar? Have you shaken it?

And 5 weeks for only 80 % colonization seems like a while. You should post pictures.

Okey a bit of a update of the boxes i was running. Maybe now i got the answer why they were colonizing so slow. Seems like there is mold in one of them (as i can see) Hopefully the other one is safe.
How could this be? I had BRF cakes that were fully colonized (even some pins was on some cakes) I shred them in the box and mixed it all up with coir/verm mix. The mix was done with the bucket tek.
Just wanna make sure i dont do this the next time. Cause it aint that fun when you lose everything you worked for, but i guess thats the way in this hobby.
Here is a pic of the mold i found. Should i just throw the whole shoebox away?

5 weeks for colonization is too long...

@shootoox - yes I would toss or put that one outside. Looks like the green mold. This is why lots of us keep multiple projects on the go, because not everything always works out.

Thank you for the replies guys. I know its hard to say but any idea how this could happen? The cakes were just fine in the jars before i shredded them. Feeling a bit dumb now going with the shoeboxes instead of my SGFC. Esp when everything just goes shit.
I wanna start with grains instead of BRF but my PC can only do 8psi. And i feel like i gonna contaminent everything. Dont wanna invest in more stuff and just fail. Ive read on the board that millet seems like a nice grain to start out with. Kinda hard to obtain larger ammount in my area so thats a boomer though.

Highlighting this as it has been essential for me but wasn't obvious in the beginning.

Most likely it was the cakes. Either they had hidden contams or weren’t fully colonized and the uncolonized brf went bad.
Shoeboxes are definitely the way to go, just cuz this one didn’t work out doesn’t mean cakes would’ve been better and there’s a good chance they would’ve triched out as cakes too.
8psi you could still run half pints of seed, it would take a long time though.
But brf should be fine as spawn anyway.

Don’t think about it too much... Sometimes it just happens. If you don’t want to invest in a proper PC brf cakes is your best chance at success. Don’t let the mold get you down, you got this!! Keep reading and keep trying.
When I first started I had a few back to back failures right off the bat. I got so discouraged I stoped trying for a few years and just thought it wasn’t for me... If I just stuck with it when I first started back in 2013, I’d be a pro by now lol
Edit: You can look into the pre sterilized grain jars/ bags but they come with risk.. They aren’t always sterile. If your going to go this route make sure you find a reliable vendor with lots of good reviews and good customer service. (I’ve used them before in a pinch)

shootoox, that's a real bummer. Next box will be good.
I'm glad my first try turns out to be good. The small box is really kicking off now. I'm a bit concerned about the bigger box, doesn't look as good as the small. Not sure what's wrong there.

The small fruits and dark stripes on the stem can mean it was over field capacity when you spawned, or you misted too much... Dark stripes on stems = too wet.
Your second and third flush should bounce back to normal sized fruits.

2 weeks and getting some pins only on the surface - ZERO side pins which I’m happy about.
I’m seeing some stripes on the stipes - maybe my substrate was a little too wet. I haven’t misted once and am using inverted lids right now with noticeable air gaps.
